I owned a Cairn terrier as a lad and it ratched about with intention and bolted a fox or two,in reality purpose bred mutts are far superior to these accidental workers. The original terriers of most ancient breeds where far superior to their modern KC cousins,as grafters, the ancestry rarely shines through with the majority of them, thats why people wanting a grafter seek non KC purpose bred mutts.

I remember a dog of that breeding in the early ,s,not quite as big as that 32" if memory serves.Big clumbersome brute with a lack of pace and athleticism. If it could have ran with the enthusiasm it emptied its bowl it may have started the next line of must have lurchers.

You don,t realise how lucky you are,im awoken by a couple of mutts that howl like Siberian Timberwolves at 7 am every morning,if im a tad late letting them out,ive never ever known lurcher pups that howl so long and illustrious,i dread full moons

Personally id source a fleet footed lurcher bred for the job, with a jacket. The easiest of land to run still as the ability to injure a dog or 3,we have little control for natures nuances.Id love another Whippety, especially seeing the maestro,s dog on here and his regular posts, yet im still of the opinion that a little more is often needed, even in the pursuit of bunny,s.

Its a percentage game, its easier on the dog and quarry with a mutt that can get in contact and finish the chase with some ease, smaller dogs are not as clinical as their larger cousins, much of the time, percentages?.Ive seen some very useful 23" and under lurchers, ive seen far more that have been over 25".I set out with no size preference, yet reached a conclusion height, power and pace aided the dog more than a lack of it.You can still get the pace from a smaller dog, even the power with some, yet there is no substitution for height.Ive worked land with certain cover that smaller dogs are restricte

We often look for optimum conditions to venture forth,in reality we go out when opportunity arises,my idyll is a few days of wet weather then a dry night with a breeze to walk into,in reality we only get this idyll a few times a season, then we reap the rewards of our education.Ive ventured forth in the right conditions and bagged up,ive also ventured forth when its the only time ive been able, seldom the right conditions yet sometimes as prosperous.

Rabbits do not take a lot of catching, a second and third rate mutt often makes a decent lamping jukel on bunny,s.The difference betwixt first, second and third rate,is the kennel the mutt is housed in.Id still go with a collie cur combo, with a smidgeon of whippety for initial pace and tonnes of brains,a splatter of saluki for the lad that stays out longest and a little bull for the lads with the egos, seriously the breeding is irrelevant if its irrelevant to whats needed, source a dog from dogs that do,its easier after that, sometimes.

Lurcher Pup And Whats The Best Way To Train Him
morton replied to out of time's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Retrieve, the aptitude to jump and chase, socialisation amongst its elders, scents and new surroundings,etc.etc.etc." 2 things in the training manual make for a second rated trained jukel . Thanks for the advice buddy, like I said JMHO. The man's inexperienced with lurchers judging by his request for help. So there was no point in going too indepth. Like I said, it was only my opinion....that's all. Ill be writing books next?.Im an in depth sort of soul,an opinion on everything, some of which may become fashionable and relovent . -

I like to see a pup out and about learning its trade,to many believe you stick them in a kennel and run, then at 11 months of age they are ready to be let loose and kill.

I did,nt.They make for very useful muckers, especially if you need the odd favour. Most don't have access to pnc and those that do have to justify on login why they are accessing. Agreed that the cops are useful if you need a favour. Most of the lads on here don't know how to play the game....and what do you have to do to get a favour from the police ? And what games do you play you need to tell a tale to get a tale is that the kind of games Thats so fecking naive and crass, just because i associate with the odd plod and have a little mutual respect and understanding, does that make me a feckin

Lurcher Pup And Whats The Best Way To Train Him
morton replied to out of time's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Ive two pups of the same age, today was much of the same with them,i let them out in the field with their mother and a couple of terriers, first 5 minutes i let them have free rein to burn off a touch of enthusiasm, then i spent another 5 minutes on letting them have a retrieve or 7,then a walk over the land getting them over the odd obstacle, walls, fences and streams. All the time the pups watched and learned a little more from their elders,it was rewarding to watch their mother marking a mouse in the tussocks and one of the pups becoming inquisitive and following her actions.A little later the te -
I worked in a biscuit factory in my youth,i don,t eat biscuits anymore,i used to enjoy rabbit, roasted, casseroled, boiled or fried, ive gutted that many i cannot eat them anymore, even free.Buck bunny is one of the healthiest of meats to eat,id rather tuck into liver and onions.

The gamest lurcher i witnessed,a first cross bull, could,nt hunt, could,nt jump, tried to kill anything within its limited range and refused to carry. The dog was renowned for its gutsy attitude and many a nugget kenneled it,then passed it on because it rarely tagged on to anything without assistance.

The majority of landowners don,t want lurchers on the land, irresponsible lurcher owners are the cause of this situation. We deal with it as we must.Ive lost land to run dogs on because of the actions of the minority,i still have access to the land to ferret and shoot, which is useful until the day comes when the dogs may accompany me again, hopefully,do i believe the landowner is a C**T,because of his actions, nope, his land, his shout.

Id expect a lurcher to have the instinct to HJKC.Its then a case of tuning the dogs instinctive nature and putting the time and effort in,until the dog becomes adept at each discipline, which they seldom do without the owners encouragement and effort. If its not in the breeding its a job for a more determined tutor.

How did you start her off any tips you could give me in starting an older dog into bushing I had the luxury of having experienced bushers for her to follow, yet ive started dogs from scratch, its a case of getting them out and about, the majority of terriers have an inclination to explore their terrier heritage.

Don,t be so naive,at times the best of dog men and women know whats best for them and their charges, sentiment gets in the way of reality. Its harder to be hard than naive.Like said before, each to their own but if a dog gave me its life and trusted me with it, to betray it when it has no use? Im to weak for that I like posts such as this, its not about weakness and betrayal.in my lifetime with working jukels id have to own a 300yd garden to fit in the runs and kennels to accomadate my retired hunting companions, age was oft the least of reasons for retirement, ive an honest bitch here now thats

Its an hard call,i would,nt take up kennel space for a dog that no longer earns its gruel,if im to be honest, ive a retired Beddy in the house that gave her all for 9 seasons, the next to retire won,t have that luxury. The facts of life are that they are dogs,if we kept every dog we retired through age or injury?.My life revolves around dogs and giving them the best i can, reality rips my heart out at times. fair enough mate, each to his own . Do you keep the dogs as hobby =sport, or earn a living of them sell what they catch .? I know few lads use there dogs for a living, I never have I

The education system in this country now leaves a lot to be desired.Ignorance is what terrorism thrives upon. The vast majority of our elected members deplore terrorism and the botty jockeys amidst their ranks, both of which are in the minority. When these acts of atrocity fill the tabloids and our viewing screens it often causes a little consternation amidst the masses, the reality of life is that we only ever see it in the press and news.We cannot blame all muslims or rent boy thrusters for all thats wrong in the world,we often have to look a tad closer to home, until that time let the new goverm
