  1. You would wonder how wild animals cope wouldn't you.If you get a lay up you dig it out,if it rains a bit a 3 month old pup ain't going to melt. I do agree wouldn't have young pups out for the day, but there again I have put them in the car and done a bit more. Still less boring than sitting in a kennel, young pup learning where ever you take it even to wait quietly in the car. For me it's just about getting them out and about on farms, long before they can get them selves in any trouble they have seen it all. Some switch on straight away others play fall a sleep, makes no odds. How wild anim
  2. As you'll have realised by now there're two schools of thought on this. Personally I like to get pups out ferreting as soon as they're sensible enough not to be TOO much of a pain in the ass but these early trips out would be either with the pup as the only dog, the warrens small and the trips short..........or.........with someone else doing the ferreting so all my time is for the pup. The idea is to get the pup listening to the sounds from underground and seeing rabbits netted, seeing ferrets hunting etc. without getting bored and fed up.
  3. Why bother posting then? Away and Hoover the stairs and close the door behind you ffs. Right then, that's the hoovering done now (really) so I'm back. I bothered posting because I enjoyed reading that thread more than most (threads). As far as I remember Aarons bitch was bred from dogs mostly of Andy's breeding. Related to Chester I think but I may be remembering wrong. I'm sure he'll tell us when he sees this thread.
  4. Not this old chestnut again. Who cares what people cal their dogs or what anyone else thinks about it?
  5. i was wondering why no one wanted to go out with me I've never been caught either. The shame of it.......NOT!!!!!!
  6. From the evidence it was probably Bill Maynard. (Both times).
  7. They were right too. It suddenly became possible for any Tom, Dick and Harry (mostly dicks) to start lamping. On a more serious note, has anyone tried a decent NV that costs 500 or less? What kind of range can the cheap ones see now?
  8. Loosely speaking there are two types of Irish greyhound. The track dogs are the same as English track dogs. Because most coursing here is "Park" coursing, the coursing hounds are usually a bit taller and bred to go fast in a straight line. There is nothing to replace the English coursing greyhound which has been mostly lost since the ban. They were reckoned by many to be the best for lurcher breeding.
  9. If your bitch was fit before coming in season then half a dozen slips should be no problem. Keep a watch out for her "going soft" around one to two months after her heat finishes and run her only lightly then but after another month again many bitches get a big boost in muscle tone and regain their form. My own bitch is just a month out of heat and caught five good rabbits in an hour last night without any harm. I've run her lightly like this right through her heat and I'll build it up slowly now 'til she peaks. While she was right in heat she was sulky like Gaz's bitch but she's lost the mo
  10. Here's a thread with him in it. http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/46089-back-out/ If you put his name in the search you'll find plenty of his posts!
  11. What impresses me about your posts Jim, it isn't the size of the bags or the big stuff or whatever but the fact that you seem to like your dogs. Some on here seem only to like what their hounds can do but not the hounds themselves. You've taken two hounds only over the last number of years and you've made some very good dogs out of both of them. Also I seem to remember that when you did 100 last year you commented on how Ern was starting to look tired and you went careful. That's what the young 'uns need to hear. Not how some dickhead had to get rid of five dogs to get a decent one. I bette
  12. What makes you think that specific cross will suit you more than any other? You might be thinking too much.
  13. I agree with that in principle but when I'm choosing a pup I'd always try to pick one with a temperament I like too. Not easy at the puppy stage as they often change as they get older.
  14. Well you're right but there's not much point getting yourself worked up in that situation. Get ready for lots more of the same as long as you keep lurchers. It even happens here in Ireland.
  15. I'm guessing this one? http://m.plymouthherald.co.uk/articles/search/article/19916556
  16. It's good to hear he's going sound again. "Big toes" happen now and again in all running dogs but in my experience especially in whippets. They aren't the worst that can happen but they do need an annoyingly long layoff to get better.
  17. I know what you're trying to say but FFS engage brain before putting mouth in gear!!
  18. I believe those "harder edged", harder to train pups often make a better worker in the end. I chose my present pup over her better looking sibling because she seemed to have more "sass" about her.
  19. They look a grand strong line of dogs. I specially like the pup. He looks "foursquare" and well balanced, a belter.
  20. I've always liked the look of your dog but never guessed at his history. Well done and well written. Wonder what caused his injury.
  21. I know that some of the lads on here run rough ground, like rocky fells and forestry. I'm wondering what age they introduce their pups to it. Pups growing joints are vulnerable, we all know that but IMO they are better getting used to it before they can really open up and run fast. What does anyone else think?

  23. If you're walking through Limerick-Cork City-Dublin or the like you'd probably be prosecuted but if your out legally ferreting or lamping hunting or even camping or hiking it's unlikely as you have a legal use for a knife. I use a small blunt ended gutting blade for gutting but out in the countryside I nearly always carry a no 12 opinel, which can chop brambles, cut bread and cheese and do a lot else besides.A non locking blade under three inches is legal to carry but would be useless for a lot of things. Imagine trying to lay a hedge with it.
