Pest Control ..does It Pay The Bills ?
shropshire mole replied to a topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
If you want full time, then be prepared to travel long distances, long hours and lots of knocking on doors getting contracts. Then you have the problem of providing a call out service if your a sole trader. For me, its part time fits around my full time job, provides a modest 2nd income, but have no contracts, no commercial properties, just jobs that may last 3-4 visits, unless its moles then may be 10 visits~++. Think the best way in is to do a training course, get a basic understanding. Advertise locally for the pests you want to cover and start small, do good job get recommended an -
PICTURES PLEEEEEAAAAASSSSSE :hmm:

Sometimes the entrance to the nest isn't where your lance is. The railway job the nest entrance was a half a metre from where they were showing. A good puff of Ficam surrounds the entrance and moisture condtions make it inert almost immediately. Not in all cases but in many that I'd treated over the years. How do you lads treat nests where they're showing from soffits and fascias? Where the entrance to the nest is quite a way from the insects are showing from? How do you treat around ponds and water courses? Anyone ever use crawl boards, in lofts? I fully understand about PPE, Risk Ass

Try understanding what I was getting at... I didn't say I'd rather get stung than use PPE. I said I'd rather take a sting than risk heatstroke. Something I don't find dickish in the slightest. You might be Captain Cautious, but I'm going to risk balancing on roof trusses when nests are above people's bedrooms. Never been through a ceiling never caused any hassle. I'd do it again, and again, and again. Didn't charge a fortune. Just liked getting results, with repeat and refered customers. You're absolutely right though. If you do the job right you don't get call backs. I didn't get call

It Ain't Half Hot Mum!
shropshire mole replied to Nicepix's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Most of my mole traps have been put away, keep a few out just in case, going to be hot here next week as well Clive -
Mate! They went apeshit! I couldn't stop the swarming, they were full on pissed at what I was doing. It was very hot work, and I had overalls on under my bee suit. Still got a couple of mild stings and I had the pant legs, and gloves, duct taped to my arms, and ankles. The wasps were showing from concrete ducting. Show up... Apply the dust. As I was walking back to the van the heavens opened. I knew that it would kill the dust, so I went back with a shovel, a couple of gallons of water, bin bags, sprays and aerosols. Told the sparks what I was going to do and not get too close

Public Liability Insurance
shropshire mole replied to Rowan's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Thanks to everyone who replied, I looked through most of the companies policies and found Bennett and bradshaw the most comprehensive. They literally cover every form of pest control activity, including all pest forms of shooting , ( not domestic/for fun!), business only. Spoke to Andrew Bennett today and have the policy and complete peace of mind.( happy days). Sensible chap -
I use tunnel traps purchased from http://www.wma-shop.co.uk/ The opening is fairly small, and can always make them smaller with poles , bricks etc. Would not want a weighted door, as want the squirrel to readily enter. Even if a bird got in their weight would not be enough to set off trap. Equally do not have bird seed/corn right by the entrance as this will only encourage the birds

I think that a price of £40-£50 for a wasp nest is about right, any more is just greedy. Much prefer repeat business and recomendations rather than a one off "rip off" unless of course its a difficult job/access to get done, then can charge more I also have a policy of returning for free, in the very unlikely event that the treatment has not worked

Public Liability Insurance
shropshire mole replied to Rowan's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Bennett and Bradshaw the official BPCA Insurers. Was quoted £319 No excess on claims. soletrader £5 MILLION Fountains the official NPTA Insurers quoted £399 + £250 excess per claim. This year going with the B & B. still quite expensive, but the knowing that I am fully insured with a policy that understands the pest control industry is best for me. Lots of companies will provide a quote much less for pest control, but do they really understand the industry? -
Our council charge £50 + vat for up to 2 nests, £15 per nest any others
-
Sometimes!! Take today as example, Lady phones up has a wasp nest, I ask "Are the going straight into the hole? Yes. Are the round in shape? No. Are they buzzing around the entrance? No. Are they yellow/black? Yes. Do you know the difference between wasps and bees? Yes. Go there today, they are yet more bumble bees, left alone, educated, AGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Will Buzzards/kites Kill Chickens?
shropshire mole replied to trapperman's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
There are lots of Buzzards and Kites around these parts, but have never seen/heard of them taking live prey, just saying -
Try digging them out of railway embankments in July... Takes you 20 minutes to get to it. Overalling up for 10 mins? I'd rather take the sting and keep moving. Then your a bit of a dick

Postoxin Flask Disposal
shropshire mole replied to Rowan's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Its the best part of £200 a year but equally keeps me within the law, which is what I want. -
Are you a member of NPTA/BPCA or have liability insurance? They may be able to help. Spend the fuel money on a solicitor letter, since they have already paid part of the bill, would guess they have admitted they owe you?

Quickest Mole Ever Court
shropshire mole replied to jocky's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
You dont need mole jiuce, what you need is good trap placement and practice practice. Mole juice on a trap placed in the wrong place will not catch, simple as that -
Postoxin Flask Disposal
shropshire mole replied to Rowan's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Chemclear have a similar priced set up as well, they phoned me today. First year registration is £45 +vat (£54) future years £25+vat (£28:) If like me you only produce a small amount of waste, then can have a yearly collection or when ever you like Collection is £90 +vat + 75p per litre (volume) + vat = £108 + per litre volume eg 25 litre volume per year = £18:75 So reckon is about £ 108 + £22:50 + £54 £184:50 year 1 £159:30 year 2 And of course will generate a proper paper trail -
Postoxin Flask Disposal
shropshire mole replied to Rowan's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
How much do killgerm charge to register and then take away the waste? -
Have had a similar experience about non payers. What worked for me was turning up at the property and being polite but firm and if needed refuse to leave without payment. Emails post do not cut it, face to face contact does Good Luck
