    an old man near me used to have a 3/4wheaten hound x jack russell a good few years back..smooth,wheaten cxoloured, smaller than a fox terrier-some dog to catch rabbits.

    At the risk of getting a pasting from froggy whatsit ,the dogs linage is everything ,A bitch becomes one of your broods providing she is tested and of sound temperament.A dog that consistently throws workers is the foundation to all good lines .Starting out ,the advice of the breeder should be followed to the letter but as you move on,youll get to know what works over what .STARTING FROM SCRATCH WITH AN UNKNOWN IS POT LUCK AND IMO A WASTE OF RESOURCE AND TIME[YEARS ] Im not arguing im discussing this with before you jump too it, It does not matter which way round you do it as both parents

    what other breed of terriers was started from a kennell of 600 plus dogs,all tested and the inferior culled-O.k maybe the terriers sent out there initially wertent as good as what was kept at home---if i could draw an analogy with racing greyhounds-weve been sending dirt out to australia for the last century but they have faster racers than us now(to those who disagree with that statement-look up "black magic opal"..)..i wouldnt knock any breed till id tried it

    Spot on ! but if you are "Line breeding" or "in breeding" any genetic faults that come to the surface are not a problem as that is the point to -: 1) bring the good traits to the surface and retain them, or 2) bring the bad traits to the surface and eliminate them, and as you rightly say be prepared to cull hard. Here's a copy of a renowned breeders pedigree plan ... select your stud sire male (A) ..the one your trying to replicate or at least retain as many of his good traits as possible now obtain the best 2 prove

    colononel thornton-bitch was coomassie(only 1/16 bulldog i think)-direct damline of double derby winner westmead hawk...Think he also owned the famous foxhound bluecap and had a lot do do with the origin of the english pointer and had a terrier called viper that most whitebodied terriers supposedly descend from.
