I dont agree that noise doesnt make a difference. Ive been ferreting with people who cant stop talking and moving around and it definately makes rabbits more reluctant to bolt.
When Im out alone I set up quietly enter the ferrets and then stand silently out of view of the holes and this approach works for me. Of course I get my share of digs but not near as much as when Ive got someone stamping about and talking.
Different ferrets for different situations. If Im working a big warren with longnets Ill chuck hobs in and if im using purse nets Ill use a mainly jills. A good hob that could pass through a purse net would be the perfect worker imo.
Ive not been for a while but I promised Id do a couple of gardens on Saturday. Im thinking theres going to be loads of young about and Im not realy looking forward to it but I need to do it just to keep the attached permission.
Id do it even for sport. Do the big warrens early giving the ferrets plenty of time. The smaller warrens aren't such a problem because you can easily block them in if theres a problem and collect them later.
Anyone use alarm mines? Ive got a couple laying around somewhere I might put them round my hutch. Also wondered about putting up a light on a sensor but Im not sure that would deter anyone.
I had this happen to one of my jills a few months back. I found her drooling with tiny bit of blood thought she was on her way out. I got her mouth open and it was a piece of rabbit spine which I managed to pull out and she ran straight back to the rabbit and started eating again
Have you been too the vets yet? Hope hes ok
Thats the best deterent Ive got a big staffy cross whos not a fan of strangers. Also got loads of locks very strong mesh etc and the hutch is directly below my bedroom window so if i hear anything im down there straight away..
I wonder why theyre being stolen? I first assumed they were being stolen by other ferreters but they often seem to go at the tail end of the season. Unless workers are being stolen just in time for breeding.
Ive heard the theory about them being used to bait fighting dogs but a ferret wouldn't take enough punishment would it?
I know the weathers gone crazy last few years. They've been saying since October we are going to have a cold snap very soon Ive counted 6 decent frosts so far.
A lot of the warrens on my land are full of water so Ive not been out since just before Christmas. About this time last ear I was seeing baby rabbits about so that might be the end of the season for me. I hope to get one or two more sessions in though.
Hows your land looking at the moment?
I remember being about 13 sitting in a friends bedroom about 4 of us mouthing off to a bloke realy pissing him off. He kept saying he was tracking us which we didn't believe then we got a knock at the door. We all shit ourselves for a moment wasn't him though luckily.
Ive had a couple first I had was the type that fits into a car but I had an adaptor to plug into the wall and it had the silly little aerial that sits on a car. I can remember hanging out of my window putting it on the guttering. The other which I think ive still got in the loft I think was made by team or something similar.
It is early but both my hobs came in early last year and this year one of them earlier still. I seem to remember a few people on here saying their hobs were coming into season early last year.
If that's the case they will probably need to be separated unfortunately. You could get them both castrated so in future you could keep them together year round.
I prefer to start ferrets in their second season. Maybe Ill give them a tiny try at the end of the first but I genuinely believe ferrets held back until their second season work better.
I start them on small warrens on their own as Ive not had much luck with the entering behind an experienced worker method. As soon as they make contact with the first rabbit things start to fall into place.
