  1. great stuff.the duck safe for another day.
  2. a beutifull gun well worth saving for the history alone a day shooting with a gun like like that . sorry i cant help with the dating etc but thought i would present my opinion of the gun itself.love to see them. good luck finding out some history and i would like to hear if you do. atb
  3. on our shoot we have not been shooting duck and geese for around 2 1/2 weeks. they have it hard enough at the moment. the only water open is the canal and a couple of streams. i have quite a few woodcock and nipe on my permission but have left them alone too. they seem to be congregating on areas they can still get into the ground( flowing ditches/streams) and i wouldn't want to deter them from these areas. i shall be concentrating more on charlie( i see him more often above ground at the moment). we are out with the terriers in the morning( protection of gamebirds who also don't need any pr
  4. great stuff bud !!! sounds like the excitement is already going. have fun and atb.
  5. i would be more worried about the dog ignoring the baby mate. get a blanket which the baby has had and let him sniff etc let him see you with the baby and come to you( if worried then let the mrs hold the baby and you the dog). babies smell funny, sound funny and are wierd( from a dogs point of view). whatever you do try to get them together as soon as you can and it will soon be forgotten. no need to tell you if in doubt play it safe. atb
  6. if there are lots of rats about then funnel a run through the trap.this vastly increases the catch.
  7. i have no problem with the workerxworker theory mate( i bred russels for 15 years in germany).the responsible terrier men will breed true to a line taking care that workh and health take president. my point being that enough people breed "working" breeds for the money from unproven, young and or unhealthy( undershot, bow legged, weak boned etc) purely for the dosh and have no interest in either the sport or the dogs of the future. the only way to be sure of having a good chance of a good dog( whatever you want it for) is know the breeder. as i have said before trust is paramount. there are
  8. sorry to hear that. good luck with the sale.
  9. there are just as many non kc dogs bred from shite as there are russels bred from good stock imho its six and two threes. i have a young russel who i'm very pleased with untill now. there are some great white dogs about and some crap black( chocolate seems to be the theme of the day ). if you want a dog for everything in a small package then parson russel all the way bud. yours a biased waidmann
  10. people in the for sale section are appearing on 10 adds asking for dogs, selling dogs, and trying to swap them. either he is starting off for the big time or dealing. not one to point the finger but something is smelly there
  11. the main types of pheasant are: phasianus colchicus mongolicus mongol without ring p.c. torquatus chinese ringed ph p.c. tennebrosus dark blue/green p.c. versicolor japanese multi coloured( often white/light) it is very rare to find pure pheasant, most are hybrid birds. hope this helps.
  12. the bavarians will not sell their hounds to just anyone in germany. you must prove that you have the right to follow up on "high game" ( not roe deer) on a very large area. the hannover and bavaria are always being crossed over there too, due to a very tight breeding pool and to controll the size etc.i know a few breeders of these dogs over there who now refuse to join or have left the clubs/organisations. as such a bad example of the point you are trying to make.
  13. wait til 3? the dog is feckin 10 years old,he'd wana get the finger out and breed em now, take a chance for f ck sake i understand your reasoning bud. if the bitch is not fully developed then he should wait. missing the opportunity of using the sire would in my eyes be better than harming the bitch. admittedly she IS capable of pupping well before 3. she will be more mature(mentally and physicly).
  14. if the bitch is proven( for whatever you want her for) to a standard you are happy with and is healthy then why should you not breed from her? i would want her to be 24 months if not 3 years old( then she is fully grown, bones hard etc) and she will have shown her true colours( she may want to go to ground every five min and not be any good to you ) good on you for sorting out a home for the pups before the mating atb
  15. i think the aim is to go for working ability and sometimes for the look of the dog( gwp etc). defficiancies like hip, eyes, elbows which tend to be uncommon in their crosses. some will be accidental matings, most i suspect are not.
  16. alot of the posts i have read from ellir have been helping others in a sensible manner. he asks a question and gets that kind of reply????? whats that about. i don't know the chap but from the posts he has done he seems quite genuine and passionate for the sport. i see no use at all in giving him stick for asking a question which may seem basic to YOU. get off the horse and try helping. sorry but that can piss you off. as already said: at six months ( allthough making progress) he is still a pup and allthough a lesson is learned it is not set in stone. keep at it and try not to expec
  17. as with any other intelligent mammal they will take the easiest food source. as long as this is the seed, acorn etc its no problem( indeed in germany the foresters shoot only what they must)when disturbed in the wood they WILL move out into maize, wheat, oats, and dig for mice on fields which is by far the more expensive. then the problem arises. who will pay for the damage? these boar should be managed and contained. 150 boar may not be a problem but with an annual growth of 225% of the female population they will become one very quickly. a novelty at the moment but a problem that germany, fran
  18. nice pics, some beutifull dogs who obviously know the job atb
  19. i don,t know how many you need but anyone who works with metal can knock them up in a couple of min. where are you? my brother makes all of mine.if its plausible to pick them up i'll ask him to knock some up. cheers.
  20. well marked pup mate,i'm sure she will do you well. atb, p.s. i'm sure she will soon let you go to bed
  21. the best time to get the pup would be when you have the four weeks off,you can bond and spend time with it( still leave it alone for a while during day to get him used to being alone). there is lots of good advice to be had from the lads on here but use the time you have to get a good training book, arrange puppy class etc. a lab is a good choice imho.good friendly, family dogs who produce some amazing work a pup will be ok outside( i think "harry the cat" had a thread on kennel building etc with some good tips). even if kept outdoors i would get it clean in the house( for after work,
  22. i'm in agreement with foxgun tom. they should be able to hunt up,mark/point,and retrieve. i see no reason why a spaniel cant retrieve or a lab hunt up. i expect the same from the terrier i have at the moment. if we are happy with the work a dog does then fine.
