i think a dog should be bred for work AND to standard for the breed( size, weight, defining features etc). undoubtably a healthy dog which gives everything should be the aim of any program. if it works well and looks good great, show it. if it doesn't work then why would you be proud of its looks??( money ). any show judge should oversee any "defects" caused by work( whether teeth, ears, nose, blindness or scars etc). working breeds rated by working terriermen/women. p.s. i'm not a show person but value the standard of any breed as a determining factor of working ability and as a goal fo

feck me that was quick!!!!! not as long in the back as i thought. very deep chest( how old is the dog? about 9 months??) and has a hound star( german phrase for the white mark on the chest) i would guess some teckel/dachshund in there. poss with border or russel? is it very "loose tongued"?
-
must it be a terrier? as a rabbiting dog there are better choices( i work a russel for rough shooting, ferreting, retrieving of small game ). as a pure rabbiting dog i would opt for a whippet or cross thereof. atb
-
does it have a long back?( pic from the side) my teckel looked like that from the front. i would have said lakelandx russel at the first glance.
-
is that why they call you buddy love???/  sorry couldn't resist. i was going to ask if anybody could help the chap out with a bitch but someone has shown a blinding example of how terriermen/women should stick together and already offered good to see that sort of thing NICE ONE DABBER.

a lab will have the nose for the job but i'm not sure it will be hard enough if it comes to the "crunch". this by no means should mean not to train her/him but i would be prepared to use a "catch" dog( often done by handlers with bgs/hs as they tend to be hard on pigs and cost alot of time and money ). i had a lab x who went well on deer( labxgsp with some hs way back bred as catching dogs for boar). p.s. a mate works a golden retriever for following up and he does it well only lacks hardness and speed when found alive. i'm sure some retrievers will have the spirit( exceptions confirm

to me its about protecting the fields, stuff for the pot, getting out for a bit and watching the dog learn/work,seeing other wildlife etc etc. i agree with the post that say the memorable days are not always the ones with the most shot

ideally the shot needs to go into the ground, as you say elevation would help. the .17 hmr tends to break up on impact( i would not rely on it though). other backstops CAN be standing corn, mais,THICK woods etc. the problem is of course being ABSOLUTLY sure that nobody/nothing is behind or in them. i would knock up some highseats( whether open or closed, freestanding etc etc) either using wood or metal with a steady rifle rest. height depends on the ground and range you wish to shoot at. i have always made my own. its cheaper and you can build to suit the location. atb

hello all, i have two chain mail gloves. one size red (med)which covers the forearm one size blue(large) just the glove. good when boning out/gutting. up to hygiene standard( stainless steel and plastic straps). have a look on e-bay what they cost and make an offer to swap for hunting gear(ferreting, lamping, rifle and shotgun shooting, pigeon, terrier. basicly anything usefull ) thanks for reading waidmann

i am sorry to hear that you lost your bitch.i dearly hope the tosser has already offered to buy you a pup/bitch of your choosing?? i realise that a bitch( who obviously meant alot to you and your line) cannot be replaced that easily but he should make the offer. how the hell did you not lose it with him at the time?? we have always had the rule that the only one who shoots to ground is the ownwer of the dog working(common sense tells you not when locked,at the least you will shoot the dog deaf). keep your chin up bud.
-
have you thought of .22 wmr?? good distance, good power and still relatively quiet( moderated so i'm told. i had one for years but never had a mod as it was over and under with 20gauge shot). the price of hornet rounds is over the top
-
hello, good tip above. check the past threads and pinned items. there is alot of info to be had. well done for introducing yourself

i have the ones with lamb fur in( and zips down the side) the best boots i have ever had( WALKING,WARMTH,EASE OF PUTTING ON/TAKING OFF). have not tried the neoprene ones but friends have them and find them good.

where have all the rabbits gone?!
waidmann replied to langouroux's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
we have seen a few out( and sitting very tight). the rabbit we have had ferreting were fat as f@@@ though(friday). good luck all. -
anyone else any views on these rifles?
-
how did you break him to stock to begin with? he should just need his memory refreshing. if you can lend a collar or need one for other dogs/training then you could give it a go( make sure he gets used to the collar being on first or he will just not do it when its on always give a command first then the reminder with the collar) he may just get more wound up because of the shock. i think most use a bit of hazel or willow.
-
me too.
-
re break him to the chickens or keep him away from them bud. it just takes a wrong "cluck" if they are not sound with stock and they will have them. better it happend to yours than while ratting on a farm. the best of luck bud.

same here, the 30 gm pigeon express. i think for the higher birds( flight lining) the 5's are better for me. i use the same on pigeon,pheasant,woodcock............. only bigger for duck and geese( non lead of course). atb

lets not forget that in europe they have rabies, fox band worm(echinococcus multiocularis),mange and are trying to protect the wildlife. if only 20% of the fox population is above ground there are more than enough to carry on breeding( they will prob have bigger litters and more cubs will survive!!!). the fox should be hunted by all legal means. please lets not start a "natural balance" discussion. as long as the fox is fed on our rubbish tips and in our cities/towns he MUST be controlled in the countryside.

we used to have similar days/weekends in germany( from the hegering)where every one would go out at night and sit up with the rifles, next day all out to ground.we got some good bags but not that good . good stuff
