great stuff bud. the mist around herenis making lamping difficult at the moment.i'll be looking around after tomorrow though, early mornings around the woods i think. merry xmas.

just as with a pup(presuming basics are already in place) start him off with rabbit(fresh and if possible clean/not bloody) its all a game to him. start off throwing the rabbit and he brings to hand.then drag the rabbit across the ground and put it behind cover and so on... you do this with rabbit/pheasant etc. don't rush him and lots of praise when its right. as for the gun the biggest thing is don't shoot too close to him to begin with. get someone else to shoot a way off( start at 100m) while you are doing something the dog likes playing with a rabbit for example. keep on going clos

take a look in the "buy, sell, swap" section on this site bud.if you want people to give you advice mate then start with how much you have to spend. there are alot of pre charged airguns about. i would read up on the systems on offer, only then can you make an informed choice. atb

nice one, i have always taken my dogs with me when stalking and on high seats( deer, pigs, fox, badger etc) and as long as well behaved they are an asset often winding quarry long before i have seen/heard them. add to that the ease of a follow up and you have the best partner you could wish for. if you can resist following up too soon then the dog should be ok( always a risk there but thats his job). good luck on further outings. merry xmas and a good new year.

good to hear the police not over reacting and sending an armed response unit i guess you were lucky to have a field sportsman come out too, just goes to show that our friend and helpers do use some common was ther any feedback from the police about further access to the land after 6pm? merry xmas and a happy new year by the way. atb

imho a dog which is mute should not be used to ground( for bolting) the only time any of my dogs have gone quiet while in contact with charlie or brock(in europe) is when they have a mouth full of quarry . the best thing to get the guns sharp is a baying dog.waliking all over the set with a locator can and will stop the fox from bolting,he will have to be pushed out making life alot harder for the dog. my aim has always been to get the job done with minimum fuss( often doing 10+ sets, manmade and natural in a day, with one or two dogs). i am the opinion that digging( while fun) is not an eff

i would go with someone who can give you some tips mate,it will improve the quota quite quickly. atb good fun and a merry x mas.

if the problem persists(it probably will if the vixen has found an easy food source) i would consider setting up some concrete pipe traps( 3 or more lengths of concrete pipe with falling doors). for the best effect dig them in to hedges, banks or cover with straw/hedge cuttings. these can be baited with wheat and dog food( which will attract mice and in turn predadtors). they are easy to build, easy to maintain, and can be left open. when a problem fox turns out just set the traps and you normally don't have to wait long. if any non target species are caught you can release them. 20cm pipe

a pound coin being 22mm( approx)and the estimation of both projetiles( from the pic using a piece of paper ) would be around 7.5 mm. i would stick with 7.62 parabellum on the left. a wadcutter should in my experiance be concave(front end) .410 being 10.4mm i find this unlikely unless "sabot" projected. go on give us a clue

good going bud,i bet the farmer is chuffed take the bladder from the vixen and quirt it on a post a while away from the lambs and sit down wind( fox mating call may help) i would wager a dog fox or two might fall for it best time of year for fox shooting.love it. good luck!

i'm no expert but would not say that pipes in general are easy pickings for younger dogs. long or short pipes can be hard work, imagine the feat a dog must bring when meeting reynard head on in a 20cm pipe when another fox is behind the first? or a bigger pipe where the fox can turn? as for not deep the pipes are normally laid under the plough and you can guarantee if you need to open it up it will be under a tree at one end or the other. the guy put up a post about his dogs in this situation and is obviously proud of thier achievment(as i would be too!). good looking dogs doing good work wh

as ex services myself i cannot see anyone(special forces or not) choosing a caliber he cannot replenish in the battle field. he may have them from a demonstration or the like. if this round were armour piercing it would be colour coded( red tracer, blue training, etc). is this ammo .243( on the bottom of the case)? i would not know what twist the mil use,it was never relevant to training as far as i can remember anyway before trying them i would get the dimensions and charge checked. atb p.s. they should be coated in "tombak"

then the obvious question would be "was the rifle ready to be used"? ie magazine/rifle loaded, moderator on,out of the slip. in which case the suspicion could be grounded. they were i presume lamping from the jeep? even if the suspicion should be there then this would be seen as a possible offence(transporting of a firearm) but could not be seen as poaching as they had no carcass in the car( certainly not species specific). all of the above presuming they were on their permission?

i have one too,smashing.

dogs in the snow and working them
waidmann replied to CcooneyMadDog's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
snow will make "sign" in front of the earth better to read( foxes moved in but not out)during cold spells and at this time of year( breeding) the vixen will be chased to ground by the dog fox/foxes(often more than one waiting their turn) less chance of the dogs overheating, still need watering. during long walking check for ice between the toes(the dogs). harsh snow( iced over) can cut the legs. snow holds scent quite well. you sometimes see the snow looks dirty in front of the earth, the fox often shakes the sand out of his coat upon exiting. melted patches near the earth are often where -
the ones on the left look like pistol/handgun ( 7.62 para??) the ones on the right look like solid shot but are obviously too small so muzzel loader could be quite close ( smooth bore, hence the rifling on the round). a wad cutter should not have rifling, and should be concave at the tip. an exact measurement of the projectiles should help a little further. atb

you will probably find they will swap it or give you the money back if you take it in,do you have the reciept? give it a go. atb

yes mate i saw it too, i'm all for the likes of ramsey and the hippie( hugh fernley whittingstall) they put our sport and use of natural resources to the public in a positive light, better than that tosser craven and the bbc ( countryfile last sunday night). atb

i keep my dogs inside and always have done,a run in the garden for when i'm at work/the dogs are filthy i find the bond greater when they are around you most of the time.jmho. when making a run i would reccomend using vertical bars( stops the dogs "bouncing off" or getting themselves caught up).if using mesh then i would either use one small enough that paws etc do not fit through or big enough that they can help themselves out if stuck. some great looking kennels in the previous posts lads

any tips on how to get my russel working
waidmann replied to fcuk_da_ban's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
i have a six month old parson( have bred and worked them for years)he is just starting bushing. the best bet is to take him out ferreting and get him used to the shotgun, the rest will come at its own speed.don't push and rush him. let him play and see others work he will soon "click". atb with the pup. -
there are a few semi's in the for sale section bud. as said above a 20g or a 12g would do you for everything you may want to shoot.12g being cheaper in carts. atb
