the most important thing in relation to pups is management, trying to manage situations before they arise even, the pup has an inbred force of nature to make contact and they do it through their mouth with teeth ,like we use our hands what i would do is redirect the pups attention into a tug toy,or something similar, it might be a chore but is a matter of focusing him on an object and playing , letting him win it ,and feeling good with himself , it will also give you a handle on the pup if you have his most prized and fun possession at your disposal ,great for teaching recall and retrieve,,

Help to get my lurcher to look down and run the beam
Casso replied to woodmat's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
the dog is looking for movement, get him to run to a sound or word ,start using a command to sent him, give him the READY command, when you've spotted a bunny and he hasn't, it will alert him , then use a specific sound to send him when the rabbit 's got up and is sighted, what you want in time is a dog that will run up and down the beam like a yo yo, on a sound whether theres a rabbit there or not,, the sound will effect the same response as sight because you have programmed it into the dog through association ,, -
Very annoying habit from pup, ant suggestions??

basically when you get into a situation where your dog is running about jumping up on folk, there are elements missing in the relationship between you and the mutt , the dog when jumping up on strangers is looking for something its not getting from its owner, the bond needs to be stronger, if the dog is confident in his relationship he wont look any further than his handler, one thing i would do is get his drive focused on you through play , ball ,stick ,toy whatever it is you fancy, he needs to focus on you , through that the bond will grow, and the hyper submissive tendencies the dog is -

the pup is shy of coming into your personal space, encourage her to come in by contact play ,dont warn the dog off from making any form of contact with you, dogs that are put off making contact as pups jumping up , mouthing, etc can develop a sense that the few feet around the handler is a no go area, and stop short through past experience, lose the treats, and encourage play with lots of contact, use 2 items for the retrieve, and encourage the pup to make contact with the first to get the second,,,the reward should be , her coming back with first for you to throw second,,best of luck,,

dogs can learn to take flighted prey and at the same time leave domestic fowl alone, the problem with pheasant and such is they dont really trigger drive in a dog unless encouraged, many dogs will give chase but alot of time its nothing like the intensity of real quarry in the dogs eyes,if you encourage it , it will get better, ,The rippling effect of body movement in quarry ,rat , rabbit, fox , is a major trigger for the mutt, like water flowing from a hose pipe ,sents the f**kin terrier ballistic, birds have a very different style, but any motion will get a dogs attention, how high the lev

as the man said she should be on a lead, but as not to encourage jumping you need to set up a scene where she is only given any attention when she sits and behaves in front of someone, its needs to be started from off the lead anyway, use one of your friends ,with the dog on the lead, walk up to them , when the dog jumps up, give her a chuck on the lead, get her to sit ,and them let the friend praise, thats the basic form of it, but she'll need to be kept on the lead till she starts to show the correct responce to different people, which will take time , best of luck -
If your dogs had more speed and brains they wouldn't have to hit the hedge. My 2 both go into the hedge but not full force and I'm glad for it. I've had a few injuries and if I had my choice I'd prefer they let it be and move on to the next one. No quarry is worth a dead or injured dog. agree 100%, there's no need for PTS crap or thick dogs round here the land sorts them out just fine. had to retire my old boy after moving here for that exact reason round here he wouldn't of been dying from old age that I know for sure Thats right mate if people brought there do or die dogs round her

Bollocks! a dog that wont commit himself to catching his quarry 100% is lacking heart, it wont just show in his not committing himself at ditch's ,hedges it will show in all other aspects of his work ,i have had the misforture to have owned half hearted mutts in the past and no matter how fast or smart the dog was , a dog lacking drive or heart just dont appeal to me or my hunting, when i get a pup i commit myself 100% to feeding ,managing, training ,whatever it takes to bringing that pup to his maximun potential , and i expect the same in return, thats how i see this hunting game and

getting weight on my lurcher dog
Casso replied to coney clucky's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
if the dog is happy in himself then i wouldn't worry bout it, if he dont eat what you give him in 10 mins lift it , try it a few hours later,,you stressing bout his feeding is probably causing stress in him at the same time, leading to a self fulfilling loop, dont worry bout it too much, never had a dog starve himself to death yet, although wished some of the sooners i had in the past would have,, -
A dog that dont hit the hedge is lacking in heart, one of the best qualities in a running dog and something that cant be replaced with speed or brains in my experience,

I used to start manwork dogs of a tug and begin training at 8 weeks BUT your right Wilf, some like to get the basic obedience going first and start manwork at 6-8 months............. Simoman, have you any idea of the precentage of dogs that fail to make the grade in protection or man work, and what would you put it down to, bad breeding, not enough drive, wrong temperment,?? i know a lot of german trainers are not big into the whole pack structure thinking , and have decided on more of a group mind thinking rather than the tradional dominance approach to training, they feel if you

heard a tale before bout Ageless Archie Moore, himself and the missus were over on holidays in Panama when the canal was been built, Archie whipped out the camera to take a few snaps of the site, when one of the foremen decided he wasn't having it and wanted the camera off what he thought was this old black guy and an easy touch to boot, Archie told him he'd give him the film but he wasn't handing over his camera, with that the foreman a young 30 year old lad snatched the camera off Archie 65 at the time as the story goes, Archie in return hit him with a combination of shots, picked up the cam

i think there is also another element here wilf , which may have been overlooked and in due fairness to lurcher men, is a lurcher owner can admire the dog for sheer grace of movement, the ability to run, and just standing and watching in times gone past, a fit coursing dog in action , one on one with his quarry , now a dog dont need to be trained to do that as such, whereas a good gun dog needs to be molded into a form of work which is acceptable to his owner, and still the wonder in the gun dog is watching him use his natural ability to work in his own area which is sightly more man made

because the lurcher world has not caught up with the proper training methods of training through drive, they're starting lurchers before drive even kicks in , and in most cases lurchers owners are only point and slip men , not all but a lot are it dont matter about standards of training if thats the case, gun dogs and protection dogs see the owner as their channel to work , the handler controls the drive, most lurcher owners let the quarry control the dog , you think most lurcher owners could control their dog at the sight of a rabbit like a lab owner controls his when a bird goes down , not

used to dig foxes out with a beddy hound on her own, follow the earth out into the field, dig down enough to let her in, if she wasn't up far enough , dig down again , long winded way of going about it , terrific bitch she just wanted it more than the other dogs , i love seen a dog with that sort of passion,,
