Crack on I say, albeit sensibly of course. We are constantly trying to develop new technologies to combat natures mechanisms to restrict us. To me it's no more unnatural than using machinery to change the landscape to improve crop productivity or using medicine to save the lives of people that should have died as infants or older. Even if we don't strictly need it in the UK it'll improve our efficiency and productivity and with those competitiveness.

Caprelous, I apreciate that there is more to stalking than being a safe shot, but that IS not and SHOULD not be the concern of the Home Office. The only concern of theirs currently is gun safety. You might see it as a good thing but it's the thin end of a thick wedge..... as soon as you accept that mandatory courses for stalking are necessary it sets a precedence for mandatory courses for all types of hunting. By all means introduce a state run gun safety exam to different levels depending on firearm.

That makes far more sense to me. The purposes for which the DSC is used by the Home Office imo is ill thought through and leaves big questions in other areas of UK gun licensing. I can't comment on how good the DSC is for teaching people the basics in safe and humane stalking and carcass handling but imo the course should be kept for what it is intended and a shorter more focussed course introduced if they want a mandatory course to asses a gun owner/applicants safety/handling.

You're dead right Dan, but what boggles my mind is that they only consider it necessary for deer legal rifles? Someone that is granted a 243 for fox is considered safe? Someone that is granted a shotgun cert is considered safe? But someone that is granted a 223 for managing Muntjac needs a DSC1 to be safe? The whole system is deer specific, when all the Home Office should be concerned about is gun handling regardless of the quarry it's intended for. If the Home Office is only concerned with gun handling/safety they should introduce a short handling course that is caliber/firearm specific,

LOL, 'graft'.......... I've found mentally challenging work is just as tiring as physical labour. If you've never sat at a desk for literally weeks solidly working on one problem you'll not understand. It cooks your brain, you get home and literally need to just mong out and be a vegetable for an hour. Bashing keys is depressingly easy....... figuring out which keys to bash and in what order is the graft. LOL, I'd rather shift 10 ton of kerb stones by hand than sit down and have to figure out how to make all those numbers behave the way they're supposed to! ......."graft"

Why are the Home Office the slightest bit concerned about stalkers having a qualification in identifyng deer and best practice for dealing with the carcass? Surely all that should concern the authorities is that a firearm owner is safe in his use of that firearm? I suppose a gun that fires bullets intended for a fox is inherently safer than one that fires bullets intended for deer? If any course should be made mandatory for gun owners it should be a state run gun handling course that everybody has to take regardless of calibre. What exactly is the reasoning behind the proposed changes
