earliest memories of coursing dogs
Phil Lloyd replied to two crows's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I recognize that feeling ....so much pain, and heartache over so many dogs,... over so many years,...I often ask myself, all things considered,...was it all really worth it...? -
Back in the 80s, I used to take my Wife along on all the paid rabbit jobs,...I always charged for a two-man team,...she worked dirt cheap...

Years ago, I was put in a chokehold by a girt great Japanese Judoka,.I panicked after a while, so reaching down, I grabbed his testicles through his Gi and twisted em, as far as I could. He still choked me unconscious...? It was emotional..... Once that neck grip is fully in,...there ain't much left to say...?

Why would anyone do that.....?

? The genuine Collie x Greyhound hybrids are amazingly varied in size and conformation... I've bred some real streamlined beauties, and correspondingly,..more than a few, that looked like mongrelized grass vergers. ? Some were quicksilver clever and took to their schooling in the manner of A stream students, whilst others were more like me,... and were dumb as feck...? The initial hybridization twixt a Herder and a Racer would seem to offer no guarantees of a particular end result. It can often be a gamble. Possibly this is why enthusiasts so often go for a pup that h

If you get a minute, maybe take a brief glance at our website https://www.hampshire-waspcontrol.co.uk,.....it should be helpful.?

I like our wee curs to be well into the hedgerow,..they soon learn to lay back until a rabbit has made his decision to leave a bury,..and when he does,..they are onto his arse in double quick time.? Plenty of strategically placed stop nets will generally pick up rabbits that elect to run the hedgerow. They do not expect to encounter a web, whilst running through the cover. I like Hedgerow hunting with stop nets,..really good craic...

Personally, I rate hunting up the sedges and rough areas where rabbits/hares sit out to be the best craic. I traveled up to Northumbria with Angel and Swifty when they were just 9 months.. We captured several hares and rabbits,...it was one of the best places I've ever walked over...

Pic of my Collie/Whippet I bred

Nice workmanlike types, really handy for the hedgerows...? -
It's good to hear that hunting lads are still keen to peruse a few books? I remember buying Ted Walsh's, 'Lurchers and Longdogs... Bookwise, the lurcherman had not been well served before this,..then suddenly the floodgates opened and we all had something to enjoy. The tide had turned,..great times lay ahead, everything was so fresh, so new,.. and so exciting...

Sensible mode of thinking... Personally, I prefer a Collie lurcher that has plenty of thinkers,... I find them easy to school,.. they seem to pick up the mouching game quickly All my original stock were created to catch, salable/edible quarry, rabbits, Hares, Pheasants, and small deer... Temperament can sometimes be an issue with the herding based composites,..you do need to choose a type that suits your own personality... I used to be a c*nt with a dog, but nowadays I have learned to go with the flow,...Collie/Kelpie style lurchers, suit me,... just reet...

I've had some really nice greyhounds over the years,..fabulous creatures,...caught plenty of Hares and Roe with them... I admire their determination,... to come to terms with their quarry,...I like Greyhounds...

? All things being equal,... I feel that the most important thing to consider with regard to these unique herding dogs,...would have to be, temperament...

Saw a genuine line bred example the other day,...he truly was a fabulous beast, ..I can definitely understand why some lads love this type of canine.

Goodonya fellah...

If you can,...be brave and YOU do it, fellah....trust me,...you will feel all the better for undertaking this most important task, personally

Sensible advice I would also add,..that just because a Cattle Dog shows an inbred ability to herd large dangerous beasts in its native environment,..it does not equate to the catching and killing of vulpines, here in the UK. Obviously, if a particular specimen of this fairly uncommon Greyhound/ACD hybrid decides to grab hold of something, it is physically capable of sorting things out, indeed, my own stock frequently came across things other than rabbits, but, as a whole, there are far better hybrids for that kind of work than ACD's. I do believe that anyone thinking of using such

Well,...I enjoyed my time with the ACD hybrids,.no complaints really,...but, as with all types of F1 unions,...I feel it is best to always try and secure, genuine working lines. Obviously, no guarantees with any first cross,...but ya got to try your best...

Both items, shit, rubbish traps, copied and constructed, by folk who have no comprehension of animal suffering or welfare.? As a trapping concept, the foot-hold is an efficient tool...the 'cushion catch', rubber jawed examples hold their captive firmly, but without inflicting needless cruelty. Unfortunately,..the ease in which folk can purchase items off the Internet, will often allow such indiscriminate behavior to occur...

? As I once told a dreaming schoolteacher,..a deluded fool, intent upon ruling the lurcher world with a mass of algebraic scribblings and theoretical mumbo-jumbo...? "Lurcher breeding doesn't always work out the way ya want it to,...lots of variables,.nothing is cast in stone"... I've seen plenty of whippets that killed a coney, on impact, and more than a few Bedlington lurchers that carried their catch, gently to hand... Its all about individuals,..just the same as with human hunters...?

History tells us, that no matter how rich or famous a man might be,...sooner or later, any skeletons, hidden away in dusty, dark cupboards will inevitably see the light of day, often when they seem to be forgotten... This most unwise and foolishly distasteful youtube clip might well turn up in future years to haunt the fellah...?
