As keepering and gamerearing is very rare in Ireland IMO there are only 2 type of people who would do such a thing. 1. A farmer who's either desperate or thinks he'll kill the eagle before it does any damage. 2. The out and out cowboy that fortunately is rare but does sadly be in our ranks. Sadly there are assholes out there who go by the motto "if it flies it dies" and there are youngsters who'll borrow daddies gun for a shot. Either way it's our wildlife and the legitimate fieldsports man who suffers. And also IMO statements like "I can understand why keepers kill buzzards and spars"

Yeh, but it was on the cheek so it doesn't count, so HA.

Hunting Fox In Daylight
neil cooney replied to shropshire dan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
IMO at this time of year to shoot foxes in daylight all depends on how educated your foxes are. Foxes at this time of year will be out and about but to get down wind and call them in successfully will depend on how much attempts over the Winter have been made on them by unsuccessful lads. -
Very nice Rob. Nice to see an unusual specimen done justice.

Wasn't that book part of a series ? Tales of the old gamekeepers, old poachers, old countrymen etc. They weren't bad. Easy reading mostly taken from a load of old yarns and wives tales.
-
All those comments are rubbish. It's obvious that that fox lives with those hens which proves they don't kill poultry. Jigsaw have you any pics of a fox kissing a lamb, LOL.

Reminds me of a job we were on years ago that was stopped by archaeologists. I asked one of them one day had they found anything yet ? She said "just a tampon." "All we have to do now is find out what period it's from."

LOL , jeez WM I wrote that post at 8.15 in the morning, how could I be pissed. I never, as a rule, drink before 9 am. Your entitled to your opinion as am I. I think by your post that you feel I've said you've got shite dogs, that's your business. If a novice was to come to me and ask what would be the best type of dog or dogs for bushing ? I stand by my answer in that if you want a good, mannerly dog that there's no risk of going to ground then IMO I would suggest (to a novice) that he get a springer (or a cocker) or try one of the small hound breeds. Now where did I put my smack ??

That was my next question Mule. Were you calling JRTs Parsons 20 years ago ? I doubt it. And to hear them called Hunt terriers brings back memories. There were a few individuals calling them that when I got into terriers and they were usually handy dogs too. It's a pity what has largely become of what was once the most common type of working terrier.

Mad as hatters in my opinion, great pics.

Another good post R.A.W.

Far from it WM. All my terriers are exercised by bushing and there's not a year goes by that I don't have an accident or two. But my terriers are bred for what terriers should be bred for. They also naturally ignore rabbits that have gone to ground but will put them out of cover. It's not limited thinking when I say that a terrier that wont go to ground on a fox is a sub-standard terrier, it's a fact. Same as a greyhound that wont chase or a hound that wont follow a line, they're sub-standard. Also it's not limited thinking when I say that a good springer or a hound is better in covert tha

Terriers, especially curs, can be like the loud mouth you see in a pub. A coward until he has his mates behind him. In other words, a lot of terriers used for bushing might never go to ground until you have a few of them together and then you can end up with a fiasco. A load of terriers to ground, all pushing forward for a fox is not a nice experience. Believe me, I've seen 5 to ground at the same time and there was more damage done to back legs than noses. Only last week I got caught out in a place I exercise terriers every week. Thought I knew it like the back of my hand and still a terrie

A job well done. They're at it early this year for some reason. I've a farmer to see in the morning and one of the lambs he lost was 2 weeks old. This lamb was killed and then half buried so not exactly a starving fox.
-
For good reason.
-
No thanks. Like I say, putting the word "Parson" in a sentence about working terriers IMO tells me a lot about who I'm talking to.
-
I don't see anyone bad mouthing the Irish. Can I presume ye are afraid of us ? LOL

I see some of the old wives tales are cropping up. Regarding giving a dog penicillin. If you start giving the likes of a working terrier penicillin every time it has an ailment the dog will build up an immunity to anti-biotics. In other words, when the dog really does need penicillin it wont work. Houndsmen who have to deal with the cough will tell you that it just has to be let run it's natural course.

I'd try and rule out an obstruction in the throat before giving a medicine for something he mightn't have.

Not yet but I watched a hare today that to me was a doe about to have young. Interesting what you say about buzzards ? Over here they're blaming everything from coursing clubs and lurcher men to foxes for the decline in areas of the hare when in my opinion they should be looking at the buzzard. Scavengers ???? Don't make me laugh.

A lad told me a while ago he digs with Sporting Jack Russells,he is still wondering why I nearly choked on my pint. Liam, it sounds to me that your drinking with the wrong sort of crowd, LOL. But Liam you'd remember the real, proper type of Russell and I bet you never heard the word Parson until a few years ago. LOL, I bet another sentence you've never heard is "Great dig lads, now hand me up that Parson Russell ". LOL.

Thank for asking but no, one of the worst I've ever had. Terriers worked well but lack of quarry. Finished up last week and the last few weeks seen some good terrier work which sort of compensated for a bad season. I've been telling folk I prefare quality over quantity, and that's my excuse, LOL.
-
JMHO but I have NEVER heard any man who's serious about working white terriers in the proper way use the word "Parson". When I see an add for "working bred" terriers and see the word Parson in the same add it's like seeing an add that says "Sports car for sale, has no engine."

You must remember here in good ol' Eire we consider Mrs Browns Boys a soap opera. It's more believable than your Corrie, Emmerdale etc. etc.
