That brings back memories. I have a very good video somewhere of Tandragee. Even though it's only and an hour and a half up the road from me it used to take me 2 or 3 days to get home, LOL.

Maybe your right Danny, but look at what happened other breeds that need a firm hand when they fell into the pet brigade. Like I've said before, the wheaten was probably safer when it was in the hands of the few that know the breed than the many that think they know the breed. Still though, financially there'd be many's a lad happy to see the popularity of the breed.

Anyone remember the Tandragee show what was, in my opinion, the best terrier and lurcher show that was ever ran. I judged the wheatens in the early 00s. If I remember correctly there were between 25 and 30 wheatens in the wheaten class. This was without a doubt the most wheatens that were in the one field together since the early 80s. A privilege to judge and a pleasure to see. ALL were prime examples of the breed. LOL, I had to count my fingers after the show. There was also a weight pulling competition at the same show and unfortunately there was one accident in which a bull type ter

We can see that Rex, don't worry though, most the lads who have them know nothing about them either. Doesn't stop them breeding them though.

Is that last sentence in your post not a stupid thing to say ?

Sorry to burst your bubble Jigsaw, BUT, a real poacher never, ever admits to ANY crime. What you have there is a dog that you can never trust.

And best of luck with them Mick. I love to see someone enjoying their dogs and looking after them. The last few years the wheaten suffered from the puppy peddler, big time. It went from a little known breed of Irish working terrier to a must have dog. What worries me about the wheaten is that there's folk taking them on who know nothing about them. For instance in your photo those two wheatens tied to the gate close together. But then again maybe the breed is changing in the same way that many other breeds change when they're not bred the way they were originally. JMHO and again, enjoy

I said it before and I'll say it again, 15 or more years ago there were probably less than 150 wheatens left that could be called working wheaten terriers. BUT the breed was safe due to the hands they were in. NOW they're as common as muck and after reading that post I'd say the wheaten could be in trouble. I hope I'm wrong. But I'll be amazed if I am wrong as in the last few years there's been a few individuals who've churned them out to anyone who'd believe the "legends" and stories and give a large sum for them and an even larger sum if the dog came with a rather dubious piece of paper.

The Way Terrierworks Going.

The anti's who are members on this site must be gleaming with pride reading all the doom and gloom about the state of terrier work. How is terrier work about to be banned ???? Is there something we don't know ????? Terrier work was lucky enough to be one of the fieldsports that emerged out of the trainwreck called the Hunting Act relatively untouched. All through the work of a few individuals who for one second wouldn't accept that terrier work was ever going to be banned. It is up to every single one of us who work terriers to ensure that no more unsuitable material or stories or informat- 105 replies

noticed a few otters on the roads myself neil Yes, in hard times they're not the fish only predators that folk think they are. I lost a chicken last week and I'm blaming an otter. As we speak there's a dead otter about a mile away and if an otter's going to be killed on the road I hope it's the culprit. I tried rearing 26 ducks on a pond a few years ago. All was going well until the local trout stream flooded. An otter took all 26 in a couple of weeks. Cute, cuddly animals my arse, LOL. These floods are hard too on the heron and God love one of my favourites, the Kingfisher. They must

Most of Ireland the trout season opens 1st of March but some start on the 15th so you'll have to check locally. If these storms continue most rivers will remain unfishable . I seen a heron catch a trout the other day in a foot of water in a field. I've also seen a couple of dead otters on roads which means they're travelling around looking for sanctuary too.

Esox, if your talking about the Irish border then there's a good chance the hounds you hear are the packs kept by local lads usually to hunt hare but some are kept to hunt fox. Each lad keeps a hound or two and on a Sunday a group of lads get together for a hunt. It's very popular around the border counties and the laws are different to the hunting and fox control that Wilbur just gave us a report on. Around the Irish border the hounds are usually stopped before they come to terms with the hare. Nice pics Wilbur and looks like the best of country for a view.

As I said before, those two lads are a credit to terrier work and fieldsports. Any young folk coming into the world of hunting and terrier work should look at those lads work ethic and take a leaf or two out of their book.- 105 replies

Án Táin Working Airedales - New Recruit
neil cooney replied to foxhound45's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
So in your experience with ,as you call them, Pure Game Wheatens could you hunt a few of them together loose through covert where they would find and hunt quarry? Then could you hunt the same wheatens through, say, a field of sheep no problem ? Also with your wheatens could you hunt them in say, a bit of strange country where there'd be the risk of earths ? Also if as you say, the wheaten is the best of the large all round terriers can you shoot over them ? -

Black Phillip, giving out bad information such as that is one of the reasons so many people take on a breed, realise it's totally unsuited for them and ends up on the merry-go-round of dogs for sale. A good, properly bred wheaten is not suited for running loose around the countryside. -
Those dogs get a full military funeral when killed in action so I'd presume steps will be taken to get it back.

The two lads in that video are a credit to terrier work and fieldsports. They kept their cool and still carried on with doing a professional and thorough job.

A spaniel is supposed to work mute but some of them do speak on certain game. A lad I shoot with has a bitch who speaks coming up to a pheasant but on nothing else. Fatman used to have a bitch called Sally who was a brilliant bitch to shoot over but would speak on a fox. At the time we kept a few hounds and we used to run Sally with them through covert. The hounds often babbled but if you heard Sally giving tongue you knew he was in it. IMO it can be useful at times but most spaniels are mute and if you know your dog well enough it's body language will tell you what's around.

Countrymans Weekly Artical On Patterdale Terriers

Bosun, I'm fond of a drink so I'll say that glass is half empty, LOL. -
It's true, Eire's f****d. Ten years ago I could buy a bottle of potteen for 10 quid and after half of it I'd sleep for 2 days. NOW, the same sized bottle (although not of the same man , he gave up making it) will cost me 12 euro and I could drink it in an afternoon. RIP OFF IRELAND.

Countrymans Weekly Artical On Patterdale Terriers
neil cooney replied to bbs's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
30 years ago there was concerns that the working lines would be lost forever due to those that chased the ribbon, sought fame, stole dogs, peddled and anti's. Here we are today and there's as good a worker (if not better) than ever. Big deal, let the pretenders in their little minds tell themselves they have the best. In saying that, I can understand how annoyed someone who has striven for a good line of working terrier through hard work only to see a "new comer " who's read all the books, believed all the bullshit and bred all their bitches make a fortune over night. Like most of life,- 47 replies

Yes but we're talking the mid 19th century when Lord Orford (I think) but a fighting dog over a greyhound to breed back into his greyhounds.

Like I said Mosby, the e-collar in my opinion should be the last alternative to the bullet. And yes, I agree that there are terriers that just cannot be trusted with livestock but unlike hounds or lurchers it's not the end of the world. It just restricts the amount of hunting you can do with your terrier.
