It might be very selfish of me to say this but as a hunting man I like to see the anti's targeting angling, horse racing etc. Firstly, they are never going to succeed in anyway other than ruining some poor fellows day. Secondly , it shows the general public that these scum are nothing other than un-educated troublemakers. Yes, I feel sorry for someone having their day ruined but as long as these incidents make the media it helps turn decent folk against them.

Best Book About Working A Terrier
neil cooney replied to biglad1990's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Terrier work can't be learned from a book but I would never stop a young lad reading just about anything on the subject. One book IMO that a young lad could learn a bit from is Eddie Chapmans first book. -
Best Book About Working A Terrier

Would not give him the steam of me piss let alone buy his book,he is an out an out peddler not a terrier man. Don't be so rude, LOL. -
I wish you's all the best with the new dangers to terrierwork. Those against terrierwork in France will be looking to educate the French public with their lies in every way they can so make sure that no one is giving them the ammunition they need to use against you. Are the other hunting organisations in France supporting terrierwork ?

If your terrier is getting tired after a couple of hours hard action then diet and fitness are the factors that need to be addressed, not a fix to keep him going. However, if your rat hunts are non stop for 5 or 6 hours then I suggest you keep the venue to yourself, LOL. A fit healthy terrier should be able for 6 or 7 hours in the field.

Your right, you can look to much into what's right to feed your dog BUT, try working a dog hard on kitchen scraps and see how it looks after a while.

Just out of interest, but is there a move on in France to ban traditional terrierwork ?

A Bit Of A Project . . .

Have enjoyed this thread but one thing a place like that needs is a Poteen Still and THEN it would be a little piece of heaven. -
When ever your offered a horse or pony always find out how the horse was destroyed. Some vets will kill a horse with a general anesthetic and enough to kill a horse will kill a pack of hounds. Always make sure the horse was shot.

A Good Bit Of Dinner

Fresh shellfish, it doesn't get much better than that. -
Yep, Murphy's law dictates that something will happen to something you take a loan of. I know of a lad borrowing a Jack Russell that was just a pure baying type, never getting hurt. It lost an eye. I've known of the most honest of men called a dog thief after getting their wires crossed over the loan of a terrier. Whether a mistake was genuinely made or not I don't know. If you deal with the type of messers who frequent the terrier game then loaning a dog can often be a great way of not seeing your terrier again and the end of a friendship. JMHO but a lot of dogs wont work for a new

I think it was in the North at Easter on the Erne system. Yes a disgrace. There was a time I cursed the Eel for taking my bait and wrecking my hook length but I'd be happy to complain about them now.

Everyone seems to have different opinions on how to feed a working dog and a lot depends on just how much work your dog actually gets. I know of packs of hounds who only get fed beef and they look well and hunt well on it two or three days a week. One thing about butchers scraps is that no matter how gone off or how fatty they're better IMO for your dog than anything you buy in a tin or a bag. A couple of times a week will keep them right and happy.

Even those not involved in the sport knew of Ger McKenna. R.I.P.

1m x 1.5m will be sufficient for 1 terrier, which is all you will have if you put 2 terriers in 1 run... JMO but that sounds very small. My ferret hutch is that size.

f**k that, I'm never drinking milk again.

13.5 inches is the length. WHAT, on a cold day maybe.
-
Fair play, you could have stuck them in the Countrymans Weekly as the new "wonder cross" for £500 a pup but you've been honest and it looks like they're getting the best available start in life. Who knows,You could end up having some right fun and sport with them.

When Should The Terrier Travel ?
neil cooney replied to fox assasin's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
I used to ask two gentlemen regularly at the meet "will there be scent today?". One of these gentlemen was a legend in the game with 50 plus years in hunt service. The other first hunted in the late 50s and is still actively involved to this day. They always had the same answer "I don't know." What chance have us "youngsters" got who think we know it all, LOL. -
13 1/2 inches. I presume that's it's girth, how long is it.

When Should The Terrier Travel ?
neil cooney replied to fox assasin's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
No, no mistake made but of course I am talking about earths bigger than a 2 or 3 holer here. Yes, to me a small earth can quickly be found to be holding or not by a terrier that checks the entrance and say yes or no. But in a big place I like a terrier to travel and tell us whether there's something home or not. In such places IMO you can't walk away from them hand on heart and say they're empty because your terrier's had a sniff around the entrance. However, when checking such places and they're empty I do like to be on my way quickly. Now as for a young terrier checking empty places. All -

When Should The Terrier Travel ?

At last a bit common sense that sounds like it comes from experience. Of all the breeds of hunting type dogs hounds probably have the best nose. So why then can a fox leave a covert 5 seconds in front of hounds and yet they sometimes can't pick up his line. It's because of the science of scent. And the scent around an earth is no difference. Especially if the fox has been to ground for some time. Unless a good, reliable, honest terrier gets in there and checks it you CANNOT walk away saying an earth is empty. Who ever said that a terrier that travels an empty earth is false marking hasn'
