  1. Put up more Woodcock yesterday than we did for the year so far. Got 2. Highlight of the day, shot a cock pheasant that ran and my bitch , Tuppence, got him a half an hour later.
  2. I see "tongs" mentioned. Other than one or two lads who I thought might actually be capable of wearing one I only ever seen them used a few times. And thank goodness for that, they made a coward feel brave and could be used in a very cruel manner. BUT, I must admit some of them were of a very clever design and the last pair I seen were for lifting the fox by the scruff and in no way could they be used cruelly. Also, I always thought those nooses on the end of a bar used by dog wardens and RSPCA cowboys were just as cruel. The hose pipe is a new one on me. You'll always learn at this game but
  3. Spot on Jigsaw, a lump of a dog that could be used to hold or pull one at the end was a tool in those days, not a sporting exercise. I know of collies, a labrador, mongerals and the various strong dog breeds that were all used. It didn't matter if they screamed the national anthem while they did it as long as they did it. Thankfully those days are where they belong, in the history books.
  4. Thankfully those days are gone. Several terriers to ground at once, earths destroyed forever with trenching, bars stuck through terriers and quarry, days wasted looking for dogs and then as your about to break through you look up and here's the terrier looking down at you , never one of mine though, LOL. Even when the grey box was in it's infancy they were that unreliable that it was vital that the terrier man knew how to locate his terrier. It usually started with someone ramming their head down the entrance as soon as the terrier entered to see did he go left, right or straight on. That t
  5. OK Hound, just that to me it looks like you already have your sales pitch in order. But, like I said, time will tell. A few things confuse me though. You say they're rare. When I used to write to Henry a good bit I was of the impression that there were plenty of working Airedales in the states. You say they'll be the best HUNT terrier. What's wrong with the types used nowadays ? Also, are you trying to tell us you dig to them ?? I'd also find it hard to believe they're better in covert than a foxhound , but that's just my own opinion. Good luck with your new scheme. the only thing

  8. I suppose only time will tell Foxhound if your dogs will fill the role you say they'll bring to the hunting field or become another money making scheme. Sadly I fear it will be the latter.
  9. There's one place I shoot where they all come in in the evening and that doesn't always suit me but early in the morning it could be covered in them. I do have to stalk it and try and get a quick brace as they leave it and maybe get another shot or two off as they circle around again. The only way you might get ducks coming in early morning is if somewhere nearby is being shot at daybreak.
  10. High winds, cold and heavy rain mean one thing, foxes to ground. First earth this morning a brace, can't beat it.
  11. Glad to say I met Joe several times and what a character. When I heard last night about his passing I said to my daughter that there's another one gone to the grave, the likes we'll never, ever see again. Do you remember Fatman he banging on the door of the pub at 7 in the morning shouting "I know your in there, let me in." RIP.
  12. You must have soft tender feet Dillydog. Lad I hunt with buys those gortex boots at anything up to 190 quid a pair and tends to get a couple of seasons out of them. A pair of Fell Boots could do you up to 20 years. That makes them IMO a cheap pair of boots.
  13. I think you'll find that a couple of boxers in your list are not British. Also, IMO how on earth can the names Lewis and Cooper even be in the same sentence ??????? lewis was undisputed heavy weight champion of the world cooper fought and put down one of the best heavyweights of all time he lost admittedly and cooper was a british and european champion so i included him and if you tell me whos not british i will take there name down neil Barry McGuigan and Steve Collins are both Irish but McGuigan is what we'd probably call a Plastic Paddy. Lennox Lewis was a heavy weight champ
  14. So basically Walter, your in a country that's full of pig hunting bull type terriers but your asking lads from a country where it's illegal to work a bull type terrier in any of it's traditional ways (other than weight pulling etc.) to get in touch with you. Good luck with that one, LOL.
  15. Unless, of course your comparing Lewis to Tommy Cooper.

  17. Have to agree, he was a proper old fashioned slugger until the Watson fight, after that he became more of a scientific boxer. Saying that, I do think Benn was robbed when he fought Eubank. But what a fight !!!!!!!
  18. as has been said its a funny old game. i new a fell that after its first season killed every fox it could get to. it done this for eight seasons often to ground for many hours. often worked sore. allways got regular work, never put a foot wrong . this dog could be shouted out. with ease. yet i never saw him come away unless he had killed below. i wouldnt say that is lacking heart. and only a fool wouldnt take stock from a dog like this.and to think he was nearly culled as his owner thought he was walking off his job. only when his owner dug down to the original marks did he realise that it wa
  19. I agree, but to state in a fieldsport publication that your against certain aspects of a certain fieldsport IMO is not healthy.
  20. There's been many an article on terriers and terrier men get their praise when due. IMO it's a hunting magazine, not a horsey mag.
  21. I don't buy the old saying that a terrier should work for his master. IMO a terrier should work because he has countless generations behind him of terriers that worked to ground. I've had and known off terriers that either escaped from their kennels or were lost while excising, went to ground, never to be seen again. They went to ground because it should be all a terrier knows to do. So if a terrier can be called off his quarry without a doubt that terrier is lacking in heart. It's useful by all means and years ago I seen a little lakeland who was regularly used under roads and such. His ow
  22. have I read this right , just to clarify if a dog doesn't come of when called its the owners fault ? Also could you tell me how you train your dogs to come away ? Marshman, there's a hell of a lot of lads who have terriers that seem to be experts at making their terriers come away.
  23. I refuse to read anything written by J.C. Hobson. He's anti terrier work, simple as that. As for writings on beagling ? Well, it's not exactly a book but the best bits I've ever read on beagling have all come from Hounds magazine. There's always plenty on beagling in each issue and plenty of articles on hunting and whipping in to beagles.
  24. I always melted the dubbin as I was rubbing it in.
