  1. King, You are not alone, nobody is clued up on Patterdale history, IMO it does not exist as history should at least be older than one mans lifetime. The men who created the smooth black terrier strain are still alive. Right now what these men know as the truth is NEWS. When they are gone, it may become history. I met one of these men at a show in Ireland recently, a gent as far as I could see. He had a van with pups for sale, no problem, if he wants to make a few pound from his dogs thats his choice. But it struck me that it would be great if that man or his friends could wr
  2. So could to days patterdales be defined as a bull X.p3d... King, I don't know if I would call them a Bull X, IMO They have Bull blood in them and some strains more than others. What defines them is their ability to work, and men who have them in their yard know better then anyone how good these dogs are. My opinion is that a terrier strain that has bull X in its past does not make them any less a terrier. Brindle in a strain gives a clue that bull is in the ancestry, Very tight smooth coats are another clue. Head and jaw size are also a giveaway. Let us not fool ourselves t
  3. You've fallen into the trap of talking about conformation p3d. I was talking about blood. Show men and peddlers talk about what a terrier should look like, terriermen talk about ability. Ability that comes from good breeding. Like I say, if some of you think that there's no lines of working terrier that haven't got bull in them then open your eyes. It's usually those who keep white terriers that would love to think of the Patterdale as an out and out mongrel. But some of us know the truth from only being with honest lads who keep their terriers and records straight.
  4. Pure Patterdale, surely it's a line bred bull cross by now? Not necessarily . There's lines can be traced back to terriers from the 70s with no bull in them. Then there's lines that had bull put into them years ago but the line would have been brought back to the terrier not the bull.
  5. LOL, used to keep a few like the one in your pic. When you think about it, catching a specimen Eel on the fly puts you in a very small club. Not many can say they've done that.
  6. No such thing as a pure Patterdale Says who ? Not picking on you personally Downsouth but there's plenty of folk who say that the black working terrier known as the Patterdale is not pure. If you want to use the K.C. definition of pure (not that I'd have any interest in the KC but when it comes to purebred it seems their word is gospel.) is that no other breed has been introduced in 9 generations. Now, if you think there's not lines / families of black terriers out there that are nothing more than black working terrier to black working terrier for countless generations then I suggest you
  7. I'll presume you're not married. Keep nets and landing nets stinking and the sudden appearance of blue bottles would make a lot of women move out, or throw you out, LOL.
  8. Is that the Eel murderer in your profile pic ? When I heard you killed I thought what a pity but at least you done him justice and used him, fair play. A lot of lads would have chucked it in the ditch. That Eel could be years old. How did he eat ? Oh, and fair play to you for not claiming the 1/4 ounce .
  9. That fox in the photo looks like a big cub, that can't be right.
  10. He was a beauty. Think of the good times.
  11. It probably has a lot to do with it. Keepers used to use game hens as broodies but nowadays there's lines of gamefowl that are not good mothers because by now there's been years of mass production using incubators. Quail are another classic example.
  12. f**k me, there's been millions of words written on the various hare species (and sub species if you're talking about the Irish hare) and there's many clubs attended by 1000s of spectators and still you get the silly myths flying around. English track rejects ?????? Muzzels because it would be over in seconds ??????? I've heard it all now.
  13. In quiet secluded areas you'd be surprised how far juvenile badger will roam early morning or late evening.
  14. I disagree. If Gap have a store there'll be protesters outside of it because of that White Power add. The protest will soon turn to a riot and the store gets looted by all the walked on victims of racism. So how will that help Gap ?
  15. Good stuff. Personally I hate to see over use of the incubators as in the long run breeds or species loose the parental instinct.
  16. They're counted every year and surplus are culled. I think it's something like 76 that they try and keep the number at...........believe it or not.
  17. I've heard Guinness is going to be banned because the white is on top of the black.
  18. Will you use an incubator, broodies or natural parents ?
  19. That's as North as I am Bell so I can expect them soon. Todays the 6th and I normally see them on or around the 11th.
  20. Took a lift to a show one time when I was a teenager with a lad who had a black fell terrier for sale. The terrier was as nice a type as you've ever seen. He sold it at the show for £ which was a couple of days wages at the time. He told me after he sold it that the dog was a black fell X schnauzer cross. I couldn't believe my ears. I went around the show looking to tell the new owner but never found him. I'd have been walking home but I hate that crap so no apologies. That's why you only deal with those you trust.
  21. Good find Liam and to those who doubt what an adult Eagle can kill should educate themselves, besides, it's not the first time dead badgers, foxes and hares have been found in Eyries . A few years ago it was thought that there were Irish hares living in Scotland because of bones found in Eyries but it was discovered that the parents were killing hares in Northern Ireland and flying back to Scotland with them.
  22. Lovely pics Walshie. I remember a few years ago out cubbing I was standing in the middle of a large forestry with just my daughter. We were waiting for the first hound to speak and the ONLY sound was birdsong. I said to my daughter that 9 out of 10 people will probably never, ever, experience such peace. I reckon I was right. It's something as hunters we experience often but should never be taken for granted, it's the best part of the day IMO.
