Flamingoes In Somerset
neil cooney replied to Torquemada's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Happened in Dublin Zoo a few years back. A fox got in and killed some Flamingos . A few friends of mine were working on the Zoo extension at the time. Anyway's someone with a rifle took out the fox the next morning before the Zoo opened to the public. If it was me with the rifle I'd have got myself a trophy of some type too, . -
Didn't they use them as guard dogs at night in case of intruders in the camp. Some tribe being held on a reservation against their will killed all their dogs the night before and sneaked off during the night without the army hearing them. The solider's the next morning just found dead dogs.

You could be 100% right. Growing up if we seen small cubs in July or August we always called it a second litter. I have no proof of this and there's every chance they're just late cubs. I have seen litters of different sizes near each other too. JD mentioning a vixen suckling a litter reminds me of 5 or 6 years ago when a farmer lost some fowl. I followed the vixen onto a neighbouring farm where I knew I wouldn't be welcome. He was a big hunting man. I went back to the first farmer and told him. He rang his neighbour and asked could I go in and shift the foxes. The neighbour said he'd shoo

Lucky you. The newt is nearly a thing of the past in a lot of areas so your pond might be a bit special. I'd definitely leave it alone 'till the tadpoles have left. Any idea what species they are ? Haven't ye three species in Britain ?
-
Better late than never, seen a single Swallow along the river Boyne this morning. Great to see them back. The new pond I seen Tadpoles in for the first time got washed out by the flood during the week and I only see a few in it now. A pity.

Don't look like sickly 2 day old lambs either. Last year when digging cubs two adult foxes bolted and got away (didn't bother me as hopefully killing the cubs would cease the problem) and after backfilling I spotted an adult fox heading towards us from a different direction to those that bolted. IMO it was heading towards the earth with purpose and was a third adult. So I would say at times other adults (probably last years) will help during the breeding season. Also as someone said, that research show that foxes will breed all year round bar December. I would think that research would b

Anyone Ever Heard Or Seen This
neil cooney replied to kyboy44's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
There's not many dogs slower than a EBT so I'd have to see it too believe it. Only basing my opinion from videos I've seen I would say the Coyote is faster than the Red Fox. Maybe this hunter is calling them in and busting them with a shotgun and letting the Bull Terrier go ???? -
I wouldn't have believed that if I hadn't seen it. Wonder was the cow stunned or killed ?
-
The word Cur gets used differently in different disciplines. To a follower of hounds a cur is anything other than a pure hound and in Gamedog circles a cur is a dog that's not game. That's why you'll often hear of EBTs referred to as hard mouthed curs.

Softest mouth I ever seen on a lurcher was a first cross bull so breeding doesn't come into it. She was also the best retriever I ever seen and the second she had the rabbit in her mouth she'd be straight back with it. The same bitch would also kill a fox. IMO it's a combination of good retrieve training and the fact that the dog doesn't see a need to kill the rabbit. Once they learn that a dead rabbit is easier to carry than a live one there's no going back.

Buffalo fighting, it's big in some countries and probably the same as any fighting sport, you can't make them if they don't want too.

That old lie could only have come from Mushray and just by coincidence I told a truth or two about him on another thread recently. I know Mushy told you that lie because it was dreamt up by Booth who told his monkey Mushray to say it. You should do your research before slandering me (a criminal offence) because when Booth and Roy Dalton tried to tell that lie before I proved the truth very quickly. So be very careful or you'll be the one looking like an arsehole, for the thousand time.

King, You are not alone, nobody is clued up on Patterdale history, IMO it does not exist as history should at least be older than one mans lifetime. The men who created the smooth black terrier strain are still alive. Right now what these men know as the truth is NEWS. When they are gone, it may become history. I met one of these men at a show in Ireland recently, a gent as far as I could see. He had a van with pups for sale, no problem, if he wants to make a few pound from his dogs thats his choice. But it struck me that it would be great if that man or his friends could wr

Apologies so.

Not winning this one either, LOL. There's an old saying, Never argue with a fool, they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. I think I'll just choose to ignore you from now on, everyone should.
-
Shamo, These posts would do that to you. Science and genetics mean very little to dreamers, Hearsay and stories rather than Photographs as evidence or Printed media that would have been checked by hunting men in their day. Pure Patterdales...? I'll presume you mean me when you say dreamers p3d ? Don't you keep Borders ? Didn't you start keeping terriers in your 50s ? I think I know the difference at this stage between fiction and reality. I don't get all my facts out of books, you seem too. The working terriers of today are mostly the dogs they are because of those that keep the

You don't win too many arguements, do you ?

Theswinginglife.com ,LOL.

So where do you draw the line ? Lord Orford put pit bull into his Greyhounds in the 1860s. So has the Greyhound Board been wasting their time keeping a stud book all these years when in reality they just have bull lurchers ? Don't be silly. What I'm saying is that there are plenty of lines of working terrier that have nothing added for the last umpteen generations, making them as pure as any breed. But there's a few lads who think they know the lines of black terriers inside and out when they don't even keep them themselves. It would fit them better to try and improve their own stock befo

Same here, no sign yet and todays the 13th so that's a bet I'd have lost. We had a serious days rain here two days ago and the local river was over 200 yards wide (it's normally 4 or 5 yards wide) so I'd say a lot of ducks nests and ducklings gone as well as any Otter cubs. Do Kingfishers nest early ? If so they've also been washed out of it. A pity if so.
-
Bit of a puzzle that answer. Funny how the three main lads on this thread who pretend to know all about the background of the black terriers don't even keep them. It's like they want to ridicule them. Mind you, Stopend is a wannabee black terrier owner. Hope that never happens, they're above him.
-
I've always questioned what sort of relationships with his farmers / keepers a terrierman has if he wont answer call outs. Not very professional IMO. My snares are down 27 / 7 / 365, has to be done and it's amazing how someones attitude changes regarding vermin when they're the victim themselves. Such is life.

AHH, I was beginning to think some lucky bugger had found the ultimate woman, LOL. Let us know the first time you pick up a bait box, gave it a shake and opened the lid. Let's face it ,it's happened us all ,LOL.
