  1. I'm guessing Pink Footed goose ? Are they rare in Britain ?
  2. The last time I fished for carp I was sick as a dog that I left the fly gear at home. Everyone else was struggling with their hair rigs etc. and I was getting 4 and 5 pound carp of the surface with floating crust using a bubble float to get the bait out, the way I used to fish for Rudd when I was a kid fishing local quarries. Deer hair clipped into the shape of a dog biscuit or I'm also told a bit of white Marabou on a floating line allowed to sink slowly looks like a bit of breadflake are ,I'm told, good flies. I was talking to a lad one day on a local reservoir and he reckons while fishing
  3. Foxbolter, if anyone else asked that question I'd give a proper answer but not you. You're a fool who has no clue. Cue the name calling. And I know all the local Huntsmen and get on very well with all of them.
  4. I'm the vermin officer for the local Gun Club and I hand in our vermin each year which results in a few extra pounds for the GC, plus it's a free service the club provides for farmers.
  5. I worked along the Grand Canal years ago and I remember watching a duck with her brood. It went from 11 to 2 and the only predator I seen was the pike. I seen no sign of mink, otter or herons. Mind you, I do know a lad who opened up a heron and found 16 ducklings in it (I seen the photo) but they're were all killed in a pen.
  6. Amazing JD. Imagine sitting motionless for an hour but if disturbed could go from 0 to 35 mph in a few seconds.
  7. I've never used wax but scalding works well. IMO if I have a few birds to kill and prep for someone I always kill it and pluck straight away while the bird is still warm. When finished that bird then kill the next and so on. It's easy to pluck a bird while it's still warm.
  8. Fantastic to see a fish like that.
  9. I can never get my head around that theory that if you kill a fox another will just take it's place. So these foxes that move in, do they appear from mid air ? Is there a big supply of spare foxes somewhere and when one dies another comes out of this big hoard of foxes and replaces the dead one ? Don't be silly. Just think about it for a couple of minutes, it's common sense. When you take out a fox it just means the other local foxes now have it's territory and food supply to share. Plenty of foxes = plenty of predation. Less foxes = less predation. It's not rocket science. Foxes are o
  10. Seen the first Mallard ducklings of the year around here last week. The terriers were following the line of an otter (the heel line as I seen where he left the river and went in) and were flying but they ran straight into a duck with her clutch and I stopped them. She gathered them and went on her way. Whenever I find ducklings I try and see them regularly and count them. First it's 10, then 9, then 8 and so on. Reminds you how brutal nature can be. The ducks I seen might have a chance as I've 23 grey crows trapped on that stream in the last couple of weeks, but, that Otter is still around.
  11. Any fish from the top IMO is the most exciting type of fishing whether it's Carp or Rudd on a floating bait or a Trout on a dry fly using the actual bait as the bite indicator is hard to beat.
  12. I presume they're Borzoi's in the footage. Goes to show how much they've changed in 100 years. Funny bit of filming there where the Wolf runs straight into the dogs. seen it before , there greyhounds that facing the teeth, not the borzois , same again with the old yote hunts , it was greyhounds that went in 1st , greyhound can be nasty dogs when there blood up, and strong jaws, ive worked at racing kennels before, you soon relies why there muzzled Spent plenty of time with Greyhound too and have witnessed them taking out their anger on each other too, lol, but I just some of
  13. There's not many more of our native animals that would get 13 pages dedicated to them. What is it with the Hare that fascinates us ? Our ancestors believed the Hare to be magical, maybe they were right ?
  14. I presume they're Borzoi's in the footage. Goes to show how much they've changed in 100 years. Funny bit of filming there where the Wolf runs straight into the dogs.
  15. All breeds of working dog IMO can tell when their quarry is sick or wounded. I had a soft mouthed bitch that would retrieve quickly to hand. With myxi rabbits she'd just give them a quick bite and leave them there. I seen another lurcher that could quickly kill a fox. If the fox had mange she'd just cripple it and no amount of encouraging would make her go back. Packs of hounds will often break up and eat a fox, the same pack will often leave a mangy fox dead but in one piece.
  16. Normally this would be fish of a lifetime for most but he has had bigger ....by far the best salmon fisher I know he makes his own salmo reels and gets invited all over to fish for salmon ...he is a lad when he speaks about salmon fishing you listen But MIK would I be right in saying that a British or Irish 30 pounder would be a better fish than a Norwegian 50 pounder, if you understand me ?
  17. Had one for years ,a great van. It was an ex Guinness reps van so had air vents on the roof, side and floor. Out hunting one day a fellow said to me after I came out of a field that he might get rid of his jeep and get a Combo, LOL. It was true though, I got it into most places.
  18. Here in Ireland it was a myth that old badger hunters would put sticks in their wellies and socks on the dogs ,with cinders in the socks. But that's all it was, a myth. Nowadays no one believes that a badger would go for you, except for Stop End. Which brings me to my next question. Why is there a thread on accidentally trapping a badger in a corvid trap on a terrier forum ?
  19. A badger climbing three feet up wire to catch crows and she charged you twice. Well, you learn something new everyday. Next time you should put sticks in your wellies ,just in case.
  20. How'd you know it was a sow ? Because it would of had balls on it like a bengal tiger if it was a boar. I thought it was a badger, not a giraffe.
  21. Deerhound crosses divide opinion among lurcher men, and so what ? Debating is healthy for any sport. But one thing that's for sure is that most folk agree that they are among the most beautiful of dogs, and that youngster is a beauty.
