  1. I saw a smooth working the reed beds up the dale at the beginning of the season and was very impressed, looked a very different style to a GWP or GSP, not better or worse just different, i liked it and a very handsome dog it was two. If that's what you fancy go for it Josh. How are the pups doing Gary ? Dave.

  3. A mixed bunch from last season Dave.
  4. I try to work my dogs seperate as much as i can, Shooting over the Lab and day time hunting and Lamping with the Lurcher and terrier, this is essential while training a young gundog but after the basics are drummed in i love to get them all out together for a spot of bushing. A few pics from the week end. The down side of different dogs trying to retrieve I know allot are against using there Gundogs for anything other than Shooting / trailing and thats understandable as they dont want all the hard work of training spoilt with bad habits. But i need all my
  5. Good to hear you are sticking with it mate. Hope it turns out for you. Dave.
  6. Now thats a big lad Nice looking hounds on your other thread Dave.
  7. Nice looking pups, good luck with them. Dave.
  8. Good to hear about your Terrier waidmann, i shoot over my Border/Lackland when we are hunting through real thick woodland and wood piles, they are especialy good when out on vermin drives. The Lab bitch pup i have now is 10 months at the end of the week and i feel she is showing real promise over other gundogs i have owned. This is mainly because she is showing the complete package, Keeness, good nose and wanting to work for me, which makes training her far easier and a joy, i have had other Labs with the obediance and nose but no where near the keeness to hunt and get into the thck, i ha
  9. Very nice pics mally and a nice looking lab. Dave.
  10. Good clip mate thanks for sharing. Pointer looks well. Dave.
  11. Nice looking pup mate, i like the name. Good luck with his training. Dave.
  12. Sounds like you have a good one there welshboy, if he dose everything you want, thats all you can ask for. We all have our own needs and wants from our dogs and if they complete our needs thats all we can ask for. On occasion my lab may hunt up for hours but only end up getting 2 or 3 retrieves, now i will have had a few hours enjoyment from watching her work (even if we draw a blank) and not being that bothered about numbers the main thing for me is the hunting, although i would be disappointed if she didnt make the retrieve, just because i like an all rounder. Dave.
  13. Well done Nik, i think you will do well with the breeding you stated. Labs have different strains, some more highly strung than others and some are real laid back pure retrievers, personality the more highly strung the better for me as i like a real fast hard hunter which can still be controlled but are very active and athletic, but most are easy going and as long as they get out twice a day will give you no trouble. Good luck with your pup and let us know how you get on. Dave.
  14. Well said lads, lets try to help the young lad out with constructive realistic advice as best we can and not put him down like is done in other sections of this forum. As anyone who has read my posts will know, i start my dogs allot earlier than 18 months as they learn nothing in the kennel and very little on a lead, but thats not to say every dog is ready to work at 6 months, like ricky said each dog matures differently and dont compare your dog to any other on a dvd or book as each is different and only move on when the dog is ready, not because it has become an age. Other than that follow
  15. I have trained Rotties to a high standard and they need a firm hand and a deep voice, as did my GWP who only respected strength as he feared nothing, my current Terrier although not the same stacher has the same attitude and needs a firm hand although obviously not as strong. Now my current Lab pup and my Lurcher are altogether different animals, both are slightly timid to authority so its softly softly, i find that you need quiet low tones and if you are say correcting running in, you have to softly take her by the scruff and take her back to the spot you blew the whistle, not shouting or gr
  16. Good thread hily I need a very versatile dog that can find and flush game to either gun or Lurcher as its main job, and retreive as big as a hare or small as a pigeon as secondry. My lab pup is becoming that dog, which may surprise some. Dave.
  17. Thanks lads, i got her from a keeper i know in Bedale. I trained her intensely up to 6 months, then when she progressed onto blind retrieves i eased of the dummy work and concentrated on hand signal controls, she is so desperate to retrieve something now she know knows she has to hunt up before something is shot, so she can finally get the reward of a retrieve, this has made her a real hard hunter which is what i want. This is not the method of training labs if you are using them for Trailing or beating or Peg dog, but i use fern for rough shooting mainly vermin and this system seems to have
  18. Looks like the pup is coming on a treat Baz, a real stunner. Spent some time around that area as a kid with my grandad, nice pics mate. Dave.
  19. Bonnie little bitch mate, good luck with her. Dave.
  20. Nice pics VH and fine looking hounds as well. Dave.
  21. Yeh she hunts rabbits very keenly, thats what i did most of her training on, she is good on pheasants and Partridge as well but after the season finishes she will hunt rabbits / all Vermin out for me every weekend. For what i am using her for i should have gone for a Spaniel realy, but after seeing her parents work i new she would be up to the job and she is not disapointing me so far. Baz, Ricky, thanks for the replys Lads Dave.
