  1. You may not get a trial winner but so what, if the dog has enough hunting instincts, it will put game out for you and with time i am sure the Lab will pick up retrieving well enough, the stop whistle may take some work, but if you put the time in you could end up with a dog you will be proud to take rough shooting and the dog will love it as well (as well as it being good for it). Let us know how you get on. Dave.
  2. Had Fern up the Fell for some training this morning, she hunted very hard for 2 hours which i think is enough for a 9 month old pup, even so she stuck to task and i was really proud of the plucky little bitch. Hope you enjoy the pics She is in the bracken pushing out a rabbit Nice retrieve, pushing through the thick bracken She is a little camera shy and lies down every time she See's it. The weather was terrible and not much about, but she hunted her heart out, what more can you ask for. Dave.
  3. Which is opposite to how i like my labs, i like Trial bred Labs as i find them more racy and Athletic and much harder hunting. As for the Cross, the two i have seen all take on more of the wirehair (it must be a strong gene), they look like Labs while pups until the wirehair comes in. Dave.
  4. Smart looking Lab, good luck with his training. Dave.
  5. Thanks allot for the replies Lads. I am really chuft with the way she is coming on and how hard she hunts, she is maturing into a great Rough shooting dog. Her Sire (Cardy Keas of Shadowbrae) has just been made up to FTC and her Dam is running at Norfolk soon i think, so Fern is a bit wasted on me, but i am happy enough with a good Rough shooting and Vermin dog. Dave.
  6. Had the Lab pup bushing with the Terriers, Lurchers and a GWP with Pointer of this site early this morn  I no i shouldnt but she is a real keen little thing in cover and at only 20.5 " hunts like a spaniel and is starting to put Vermin out for the Lurchers as good as a Terrier, So not the usual Lab i hear people saying, well no. Any way gave her a few hours rest and had a walk out the back field for some proper training. Well she is 9 month today and turning into a very keen versatile Hunter. Dave.
  7. Yeh just over the borders of Scotland, is only a hour from the North East and fantastic Land. Cheers Dave.
  8. Had a walk round one of the farms we shoot vermin on this morning, we do have permission to shoot game on there but there is very little about normally, so this was a bit of a bonus. We had a terrier with us as well, as he is useful to flush Foxes from the wood piles but the Cocker X is closer to her season than we realized so it was back to the car for him Not the best day we have had but a bonus all the same. Dave.
  9. I see there is some GWP x Lab Pups in the Countrymans Weekly this week in County Durham. Who said you would find it hard to find some Dave.
  10. Nice looking pup moo good luck with her. Dave.
  11. GWP mate, a good all rounder. What ever you decide make sure you research the breed, depending on how much work you give them some HPR's can be a hand full, but given the correct training and excercise the can be a pleasure. Dave.
  12. I would only ever use him on Vermin and depends on the country, I only shoot over my Terrier when the cover is real thick and when flushing out large wood piles, in more open cover or fell land he will get away from my to much He is useful when shooting Rooks as he enjoys dispatching them. Dave.
  13. You already have the dog mate so what is the harm in giving it a go, if it dosnt work out the training you will do will make it a very responsive pet and the excersise will do it good. Sometimes odd ball breeds can suprise you with there keeness, i used to bush rabbits with a Rotti, she used to fly through the brambles like a terrier, worth a go mate good luck. Dave.
  14. They are excellent hunters and flushes of game and allot of lads shoot vermin over them, but they are very hard mouthed and you would be lucky to get them to do anything but hunt in the field as when they get a scent they go deaf on you, they can also get away from you while following a scent. As with every thing though if you put in the time you can do wonders. Let us know how you get on. Dave.
  15. They are very GWP looking Rod, what is there hunting style like is it very HPR and how would they measure up to a pure HPR (Without upsetting too many people) Dave.
  16. Rod, they are a cracking pair of dogs you bred, did you use a Choc Lab deliberately so you could get Choc Wirehairs and have you tryed a litter out of a black Lab before. Dave.
  17. I have seen 2 GWP x Lab's although unfortunately never seen any work, both seemed to have taken slightly more to the Wirehair and looked like strongly built Wirehair's (nice). One of them is owned by a Keeper who i know would never keep any rubbish, he claims it suits his needs very well as he can allow it to range on Grouse or hunt very closely in thick woodland, he also uses it allot on vermin and Fox drives. Eskdalehawks, nice looking pair, got any pics of the front of the dogs. Dave.
  18. The biggest problem you may have RB, will be finding one. As for cover i think it will be down to the breeding on the Lab side as all GWP i have seen will face any cover. The Lab bitch pup i have at the minute will face cover like a spaniel but not all Labs are like her. Dave.
  19. As a first Gundog i would say a good working Lab or Springer, as both will do a good job for you. I have had Labs, GWP and Cocker X in the past, i now have an 8 month old Lab bitch who has about trained herself, she is only 20" high, very athletic and will face any cover as keenly as a springer, not all labs are like this so make sure you are looking at good working / trailing stock. Let us know what you decide. Dave.
  20. RB what work do you have in mind for the dog ? I started a similar thread a few months ago after an article in the shooting times. The well known keeper Lindsay Waddell stated that he was very impressed with this cross and he liked there versatility in both upland and thick lowland cover. I also got a disappointing response in my thread, as most in this section will not entertain cross breeds and even more strangely will not even debate them. The fact of the matter is that any cross is a gamble, you could end up with the best of both breeds and an excellent animal, or a below par animal

dunc, Kiwi is right they are totally different breeds in confirmation and genetic make up, its only there names that are similar. Dont get me wrong the GSP is also a good versatile hunter in its own right and a very handsome dog, but in my opinion they do not hit cover as hard as a GWP (but i am sure someone will put me right) The GWP that i lost a few years ago, although 27" at the shoulder, used to fly through bramble bushes like some kind of over grown terrier and Gorse never bothered him at all, the thicker the better. Like Kiwi said, gather your facts mate before making a decision.

Its your decision dunc but if you like a dog "that goes in hard" you will not find better than the GWP. I had one from Dutch lines who was as hard as nails, very biddable to me and at the age of 2 was an excellent all round hunting dog, they are an excellent versatile breed and you will never be bored while working them. I cant wait to get another one. Dave,
  23. All the best with finding him. Good luck. Dave.
  24. Cracking looking dog Swampy, sounds like he is coming on well for you. Dave.
