I think the 30ft lead and going back to basics is a good idea, at 7 months you could make training a little more interesting by maybe using cold game, which might make the dog want to do training sessions instead of running of. Like Ricky said keep at it and you will get there, if it was easy it would be boring Let us know how you get on. Dave.

Nice set up you have there mate, well done. And a smart looking pup as well, good luck with its training. Dave.

I was out early yesterday, only the second time we have shot at this farm and the the cover is unbelievably thick, its all real deep Holy and thorn hedges and big wood piles, last time we only had the Cocker cross but as good as she is, she just dosnt have the spirit to charge through the thick stuff. So i was asked to take Ted my Terrier, now he is a bushing machine and the thicker the better but he dose have a tendency to get away from me on open land, which isnt a problem when bushing with the Lurchers, but obously frustrating when shooting. So we were now looking for Pheasants, but there

Yeh its a real shame she needs a new home i just hope she gets a good one because she a real loving bitch and would protect you with her life. Cheers Dave.

All the breeds mentioned will do a good job for you, so just go for the type you like best, not what others like. You will bond better with it if you get your preferred breed. Just my thoughts. Dave.

Ali, if you fancy a Lab, get a Lab, they might not have quite as much enthusiasm as a Spaniel, but if you get a good working bred athletic type, it will do an excellent job for you as a rough shooters dog. Or If you fancy this cross, go for it, i have seen a few of this type of cross and all have been good workers. Keep us informed of your decision. Dave.

You are dead right Skycat, its all about building confidence and having the good experiences and training stick in there head and not the bad ones. Dave.

Looks a good morns work, that cover still looks thick mind. Dave.

Thanks for the replys. She seems to be coming together, so it will be an hour os so on the Pheasants back end of next week, see how she gets on. Dave.

I do general obedience for the first 4 months then move onto using dummies, but still very gentle making it fun and games, sit stay, retrieving dummies, walking to heel that kind of stuff, but thats when i start introducing the whistle (when they have marstered the general obediance). Only then do i move on to cold game and more serious training, now that could be at 6 months or allot longer depending on the dog, when he is ready, start hideing the dummies for blind retrieves, which starts them hunting, you then have to start controling him and inroducing the stop whistle. Get yourself a goo

Took Fern out for a bit of training and hoped for some better luck than i had had all week, first of all Fern had been kicked by a horse earlier in the week and escaped luckily unharmed, and then went on a Fox drive on Saturday, we should have taken 3 but all made good there escape So any way took the pup out again up the dale, but this time took the Shotgun, a week is a long time in the life of a pup and she started slowly, we then hit a spot where there was alot of scent and she picked right up hunting well, she flushed 2 rabbits without knowing it and then after about 1 hours hunting s

Thanks for the intrest, she will only be used to shoot over and as its mainly rough shooting Vermin all year round, she has alot of work ahead of her. I know most people would think a Springer would have been the better choice (and they would proberly be right ), but i liked the look of her parents both hard hunting and athletic, so we will have to wait and see. Cheers Dave.

Nice looking dog Vislahpr . I have just started getting my pup hunting and at first she didnt know what to do or what she was supposed to hunt, so i started on blind retrieves of cold game, at first in the garden, dragging a dead rabbit about 4 ft on the grass then hidding it behind a bush, so she got used to following the scent, i then moved on to thicker cover in the field and increasing the distance of the retrieve and so on, by the third time of doing this she was hunting every blade of grass and now she is flushing rabbits up the dale. Then you have to control them and you wonder wh

Well my pup Fern was 6 months at the week end and after coming on so well with her training, i thought it was time to get her out up the Dale and let her hunt up a few rabbits, she is good on the blind retrieves so getting her to hunt wasn't a problem. I left the Shotgun at home but took the starter pistol, she has been around gunfire at the Clay ground, but a little more wont hurt. Getting into the cover Flushing a Rabbit She learnt alot in the reedbeds and luckily she found out what she was hunting, i wont be taking her up the dale to often yet as she is still

Try him on cold game and see if that improves his interest, then like previously said, reduce the amout of retrieves in a week and get him hunting. Dave.

Thanks Jack, but it wasnt her. Dave.

Thanks for the replys. The Cocker cross, i had for about 6 months, put as much training into her, then sold her to my mate, she is a cracker and possibly the best dog i have seen pushing tight rabbits out of reed beds, my mate has let her training slip abit recently (i am sure he wont mind me saying) and she is hunting for her self a bit, loosing her head, but i am sure its nothing a bit of a refresher course wont fix. Shes mainly Cocker with a bit of Beagle and Terrier in the mix. Dave.

I hate dog theives i know what they should get Some pics of the dogs would help. Best of luck with finding them. Dave.

The smallest rabbit came in handy for a bit of training with my pup Fern when i got back. Her first time retrieving Fur, so i was over the moon. It seems one step closer to getting her out hunting. Dave.

The Cocker X i sold my mate has been getting increasingly wilder in her hunting recently, so we decided to have a training day up the Dale and shoot a bit of Vermin as we went. Retrieving a rabbit over the bridge She is excellent on all aspects of Hunting and Retrieving Rabbit, but a little shy with the birds, this isnt much of a problem but with some encouragement she was getting a little better. Her basic training seemed to come back when there wasn't much scent and her control when hunting was a massive improvement from the last time we shot over her. Dave
