Two Osprey chicks have been taken from the nest this year, but, they were not killed and eaten by the Buzzards, although one has a broken wing. The buzzards nest is in close proximity to the Ospreys nest and there has been a territorial battle going on. Looks like the buzzards have won. The biggest threat to the Ospreys is Goshawks, as a bye i have been watching the nest on the Dyfi estuary and a Honey buzzard turned up there today to be given short shift by the Ospreys. If it's got a hooked beak I love it. That includes my Parrot. TC

Why do you say ex triploid brood fish? Because that is what it is. The female brood trout are injected with hormones that make the resulting offspring gender netural. They are neither male or female. Ergo because the offspring cannot breed they grow quicker as they do not come into breeding condition. When a brood fish has reached the end of productive egg producing they are let loose in the pond for people to catch. TC

If the fish are preoccupied on one type of feeding it can make them oblivious to any other type of feed. That said, I have seen some good catches made on black lug even when the bass are shoaling, when they have a shoal of whitebait on the surface we used redgills and bubble floats, once they go down one of the guys lobbed some worms over and he started catching straight away. I got out some crab that I had onboard and not a touch, yet he was still catching with the lug. I seen him do it a quite a few times sometimes it worked, others it didn't. That is one of the facinations of fishin

Did you not think about live lining a mackerel or even ledgering a live mackerel? When long lining for bass with live mackerel first you had to find your mackerel for bait, once you found your mackerel it was odds on that there were big bass and ray with them also. Drop a couple of lines where the mackerel were would always produce some good fish. All you had to do was stay with the mackerel and you would have a tidy bag by the end of the shift. TC

Bait feeding fish follow the bait, in turn bait fish as a general rule swim into the wind and as the winds are variable they are not in the same place all the time. Once we found fish, you could usually follow them for days by watching the wind direction. Say for an example the fish were on a mark and the wind chaged from southerly to westerly the fish would usually be on the best ambush spot west of the mark that they were on the previous day. Depending on tides etc, fish have ambush spots where it is easier to catch the bait fish, wrecks, reefs anywhere where they can spend as little ene

Nobody is saying it is going to win any prizes, it's a fly on the wall documentry. And taking it for what it is, it is enjoyable. A few lads having good honest fun. It was so bad you had to watch it twice? TC -
I don't use quick sets and seeing LC's basket was made for 10mm glass poles, it's only them that will fit in them. That said, this chap seems to do well with his makeshift netting gear. http://www.thehuntin...me-longnetting/ Most commercially available baskets will accommodate hazel poles so I dont see the problem with using them. I think they hatched on the 29th/6 and 2nd of this month, that would make them between two and three weeks old. TC -

My runners, the flowers are just dropping off. I have tried spraying them in the eveningI trickle water them through the day and the bludy flowers are not setting they are supposed to be self pollenating aswell. Been like this for the last three weeks. I grew a new variety of spud for me this year, Winston, what a yield huge potatoes for first earlies, nice flavour, but terrible texture, watery as hell. TC

IMHO there are only two books that are worth the read. The Art of Long Netting by Harold Wyeman and Long Netting From Peg To Peg by Martin King. Out of the two I think the later gives more detailed information on how nets are made, setting up nets, etc for the beginner, with plenty of pictures. We all know one picture is worth a thousand words. The art of long netting does give some information but you really have to look for it amongst the anecdotes, never the less it still is a good read. I have used the report button on occasions, the last time was I mentioned to a poster that the photo of his dog taking a deer was a bit much and he should delete it before a mod seen it. He and his mates told me in no uncertains terms to feck off and it was nothing to do with me. Press the button every time. I suppose I will get some shit for this, but you lot are amatures compared to my wife. TC

Buster, I think you have the right mentality to make a good netter. Do your self a favour and get Long Netting From Peg To Peg by Martin King. It does not go into the fieldcraft side of netting, but covers everything you need to know about setting nets, the make up of nets and how nets work. Buy this and read it before you buy the nets. It may well make a difference as to the type of net you will want. Most of the people who are experienced netters use the traditional style of netting as it is aguably more versatile. Also have a look back through this forum as there are some cracking a
