  1. I have to agree with the above statments, but a word of warning to anyone trying it for the first time. Do not make the mistake of teaching the dog antisipation. Do not get the dog trembling for the words take it. Leave it, should just mean It's off bounds to you. If you use food do not tell the dog to leave it, then moments later tell it he can have it, that causes the dog to learn antisipation and it will always be looking for the follow up to leave it. Far better to tell the dog to leave, then remove the dog from the situation, before letting the dog have the treat. It's the same with t
  2. Right before any one can make a valid comment about anything they have to know what they are talking about. To know what you are talking about you have to have been able to compare like for like. I will tell you now JBS nets knows as much about longnetting as my grandson. He uses the minimum acceptable quality to gain the maximum profit. To be honest his nets are shite. He does not use enough poles on the nets, 8mm poles are unacceptable for a quick set net. FFS he only supplies 8 poles for a 50 yard net when there should be at least 11. 8mm poles bend like a fishing rod I know it's only 2

  9. If I was travelling the mountain roads at night and seeing a lot of hares, the last thing I would do is come on here and advertise it. TC why not?there's plenty of mountain roads in the valleys. i haven't said where,if i wanted to argue I'd wake the wife up The stament I made was not up for discusion, it was not argumenative, it was just a statment of fact of what I would / would not do. However, my next statment is conjecture, so could become argumentative. I think you want to get a Blue Peter badge because you have seen a few hares? FFS grow up. TC
  10. the bedroom tax isn't a tax I beg to differ. Airport tax is a surcharge that the goverment imposes on anyone one who flies. Insurance tax is a surcharge that the goverment imposes on anyone who takes out insurance. Bedroom tax is a surcharge that the goverment has imposed on anyone who is on benifits, if they have a spare room. Can you see the similarities? TC

  12. The benefit system is set at the lowest possible rate that a family/individual needs to live on for a specified period of time. That is how it has always been, now the goverment has decided that it was telling lies all along, people can survive on less than they decided was the case before the advent of this stealth tax. The principle of the tax and it is a tax just the same as an airport tax, insurance tax and every other tax that the goverment can think of. is that if you have a spare room you are blocking someone who could use that room. No one could argue against that principle, howeve

  16. A 4z net will always, and I mean always out catch a 6z. People always state that a 4z picks up rubbish, I have news for you, all nets pick up rubbish, fact! If anyone is worried about the amount of rubbish a net picks up then they would be better off sticking to purse nets. Learn how to clean a net as you pick it up, some rubbish, leaves, small fonds of bracken etc; are not worth worring about as they will not hinder the net going out the next time its used. The worst I have encountered is rape stubble in January no matter if it's 6 or 4z it just gets into the net and tangles it's self lik

  19. I bet you wear a belt and bracers too. TC Jokes apart, I was lucky to start my ferreting career before the advent of the locator. where if you did not want to sit round all day waiting for a ferret, you quickly learned how to ferret effectivly. Noise to the minimum possible, how the wind affects the warrens and most importently get to know your ferrets. Those were the bread and butter things that you had to learn, BL (before locators) As I have said previously in this thread, locators when used correctly are great tools, of that there is no doubt. The major problem I see with the

  21. You may enjoy the job, but it is still a job and to get on you have to put the graft in. Obviously you are and you are making an impression. Don't be fooled into thinking this is luck, because it's not, it is just sheer hard work and a determination to succeed. Well done young man. TC
  22. Just because some have not the experience to work without them, does not mean we are all the same. Some people have enough faith in their ferrets and their field craft to be comfortable ferreting without locators. I would guess that most of the members on here would class themselves as hobby ferreters, myself included. I have no delusions of being the great white ferreter that must catch every rabbit or I have failed. I ferret to enjoy myself and get food for the table. There are some on here who are genuine pest controllers but I would say they are a small minority of the membership, ther

    The Booze

Used to drink when I was younger but could take it or leave it. I would go months without a pint, that was mostly down to night fishing for sea trout or lamping in the winter, both entailed driving late at night or early hours, so a drink was out of the question. Now I drink every day near enough, not a lot, 3 or 4 pints of cider the only time I don't drink is if I am off out with the nets and then I may have a couple when I get home. Never seem to be drunk and never have a hangover, but always merry. A big plus is when someone asks me to take them anywhere, it's sorry I have had a drink
