lambourn, another good show wrecked by idiots and ale, still got the paper back book of it with all the excellent pictures by hancox of the people and lurchers that used to attend happy days sadly long gone, please remember lads, keep it cool at the shows and treat it as a good day out with lurcher folk and their dogs, used to judge at shows a few years ago,and picked dogs that looked as if they could keep you in hard times, and not the dolly bird or braggard holding the lead.stillcant please every body.enjoyed judging and showing but didnt enjoy the bitchingthat has started to creep in at some s

used to be like that peterhunter in my area, the old boys used toj joke and say that you had to chase the rabbits away from the gate to get the dog in the field, but ican honestly say, that before mxy and vh, good hauls of rabbits were taken by myself and lots of other lads, conted 50 rabbits in 3 fields on this mornings early forage, hoping numbers will pick up in all your areas lads.

seen this problem before as katchum says it usually starts when you use 2 dogs together, day or night, seen it when the lurcher makes a catch and a terrier wades in, dog takes off with rabbit, kills ,crunches it and some will even resort to eaten them, sadly a lot of soft mouthed good retrievers are ruined this way, once started almost impossiible to get them retrieving to hand again,

out this morning around 5.30 am, with dogs, round my usual woodland haunts, always heard the cuckoos call about this time of year, sadly not a sound, always used to be hot spots for them, any one else seen or heard any in your parts of the country, well on the red list along side corn crake and other birds that we used to see and hear in the country sad changing times.

I presume that most of the picardy lurchers mentioned on this thread, have all originated from marks stock, also why would mark want to go back to picardyx greyhound, droping the beardie out of the cross, would the reason being just to lose the beardies traits.
-
thankyou skycat, for your reply, did a seach on picardy lurchers, well impressed by the pictures of your oh lurchers, andthecomments by yourselfand other folk who own and work them, sound like good alrounders, never see any pups for sale, must be snapped up pretty quickly.
-
just recently read an intresting article on this cross in an edrd magazine, the bloke who was creating this strain was mark treadwell, any of you guys ever used ,owned or worked any of these dogs that mark was producing at the time, think i seen some advertised in cwm some years ago,did they ever catch on, how good were they,or were they just a money maker, never heard any reports of them, think the article was written about 2007,just curious.

what breeding is in your pup matt, looks like its going to be a real cracker, nice strong bone in it,atb.
-
thanks lads for all your comments, the one about the old colliexgreys, rings true,an old boy i knew who came of old farming stock, and used this type of lurcher, during the 50ths and 60ths,day and night, worked the strain hard becausetimes were hard, those dogs did him proud he managed to buy a small croft with the money he made from hunting, granted there were loads of rabbits abut then, and the croft cost about 300 pounds, hard man and hard dogs, this is genuine,he died acouple of years ago aged 87 yrs,but always had a lurcher about the place.
-
years ago lurchers and lurchermen like the old time warreners, caught hundreds of rabbits day night,to make a meagre living, the dogs were worked hard and treated as true working animals.and basically ate what they caught and were fed scraps, why is it nowadays that every body advocates feeding high protein dry, every supplement going, and alot of dogs willnever see or work enough rabbitsto justify this type of feeding, the old lurchermen never had the money or acess to this type of feed, so how did these dogs do the work they did
-
just like straight answers, may be from people like gaffer,i hear and read about how people have various generations of dogs in their breeding, say 2nd to 5th,abit vague on this, but could any of you guys explain what ios a generation in dog terms, and how much work and time would it take onthis breeding programme, would be intresting for any feedback, cheers
