is the whippet becoming to popular for its own good
chartpolski replied to workinwhippet's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Whin, I don't think anyone, certainly not me, are saying that Whippets are better than Lurchers !! What we are saying is they have a "niche" in the working dog world, i.e. rabbiting ! It would be pretty pointless having, say, a Deer x or a saluki x if all you wanted to do was ferreting and a bit of lamping. Some people, like me many years ago, like to race on a weekend and do a bit of mooching, ferreting, and lamping during the week; what better than a Whippet for that ? Cheers. -

BALLYREGAN BOB LINES IN COURSING DOGS
chartpolski replied to zigzag dan's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I don't mean to be a pedantic little prick but was the dog not called Shashi? Never the less, I wish i was there. Well, unfortunately I'm a one finger typer, and I do make the odd mistake ! LOL ! Cheers. -

i'm not a fan of the kc either but, as non peds and kc whippets come from the same beginnings many moons ago as the non peds clearly outperform the peds on the racetrack at least it could be argued that they have already spoiled the breed, they do breed truer to type cosmetically ie coat, shape size etc but are they that important I'm a big fan of both types, and have owned about half a dozen Non-Peds, albeit many years ago. Yes, they both have common roots, but the Non-Ped has had so much Greyhound in them over the years, and the Ped has stayed relatively pure, (apart from a few cheats -

I wonder if any one got a line from Shasi, the last Waterloo Cup Winner, with a Lurcher or Saluki ? Cheers. -
He didn't quit; he was sacked ! Cheers.

As much as I dislike the K.C.; it's fair to say that the Pedigree Whippet is probably the ONLY K.C. registered type that still excells at it's origional function. There has been K.C. Whippets that have won Coursing Stakes, gained Rch status at racing, and won B.I.S at major shows. Unlike just about every other breed, the K.C. hasn't managed, (yet),to spoil the Whippet. Cheers. -
The Aussies use them in working dog lines for pig, and for running dog lines, but maybe they have access to working Airedale lines... doubt there are any working Airedales in the UK, although I have seen some big, strong looking pet types. Cheers.

what cross do you dislike & why ?
chartpolski replied to dai dogs's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
FTB...... Calm down a bit ! I just wonder what "sighthound" you like in your Lurchers ? You slated Whippets, but you say you own one ? By "sighthound"; do you mean Greyhound , or just any "sighthound" apart from Whippet ? Cheers. -

Aren't Whippets, "Sighthounds" ?? Cheers. read it properly Read it, re-read it and read it again, you say you like lots of "sighthound" in your dogs; yet you slate the Whippet.....which is a "sighthound" !! Cheers. -

For Sale Camper van. Newcastle Upon Tyne. £2000
chartpolski replied to Gin's topic in Vehicles & Quads
I stopped by Douggies today to pick up some galvy mesh, and had a look round the van. Some one will get a bargain with this motor, the air condititioned dog boxes have to have cost a couple of hundred quid alone ! Cheers. -

I don't know about disliking any type, but if I had the room, I'd love to experiment breeding with some of the more obscure breeds; Galgo's, Chartpolski's, Rampurs, Ibizans, Pharoah's etc. There are loads of sight hounds out there, some of which don't even exist in the UK. Cheers. -

I like Whippets; they have their niche in the running/working dog world. They are great ferreters and lampers and wonderful little rabbit/bushing dogs. It's a bit disingenuos to think they make good hare, fox or deer dogs... they don't !! OK, people will say "my Whippet does hare/fox/deer, but these dogs will be one off's, not the norm. At their own game, they are grand little dogs, and a pleasure to watch working. Cheers. -
If you are talking about "Non-Ped Whippets", I guess there is a clue in the name ! LOL ! Cheers.
-
On the K9 site, someone is advertising a mating , pure Greyhound sire, Non-Ped Whippet/Greyhound dam; pups should be "perfect for Lurcher racing" he reckons !! Cheers.
-
ive never heard that before or believe it 50/50 in my opinion if you put a beddy dog on a whippet bitch its 1/4 beddy 3/4 whippet was big into greyhounds few years back always looked at the bitch first if i was getting a pup thats why i said id see other opinions Utter nonsense !! The pups would be half Beddy, half Whippet ! Cheers.

Perhaps you are being a bit zenophobic here ! Recall and retrieve are just about all we English lads need from a dog. As long as it catches, that'll do Cheers. -
Once you "cross breed", genes go out of the window ! Yes, there is "hybrid vigour", but when you put two different types of dog together, as in Lurchers, you could get anything ! Cheers.
-
It most certainly doesn't count !! LOL !! Bill is from the Ashington/Bedlington area, Northumberland.... no where near the Borders ! I think he did run his dogs around the Border areas though Cheers.

They are only young, got them about 6 month ago as P.O.L. s. Strange thing is they are back to 5 eggs a day, from 6 hens ! It seems like an abberation ! It was only a week or so that they went off the lay, or had soft eggs ! I give them crushed egg shells regularly and they are fed on Layers Pellets and boiled mash, they get pleanty of greens, and I've checked them for mites, non ! I will give them some oyster shell with there grub, and hope for the best. Thanks for all the advice ! Cheers.
