is there really such thing as full all rounder
chartpolski replied to irishnut's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Absolutly, totaly, no such thing as a "complete all rounder" ! There are dogs that do all sorts well, but there isn't the dog that does everything GREAT !! When talking of "allrounders", I allways think of Daley Thompson, the greatest "All round athlete" in the world ! He couldn't beat the best sprinters, jumpers or thowers, but they couldn't beat him in the Decatholon !! There are dogs that will kill hares, others that will do fox, others that will take big bags of rabbits . The dogs that will do a bit of everything are my type of dog, they haven't got to be the best at everything !! Chee -
small whippets , does any one own one or know of a line ?
chartpolski replied to midnight's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I'll never forget the first time you came down for the 5 days mate. We were out almost every hour both daylight and night!!!. That was September and you were still eating the stuff you took back at easter!!. Good craic too especally when the rozzers followed us home, oh and the pissed farmer playing rambo with his baseball bat!!!. Midnight, i don't think you live too far from me, your welcome to pop over for a look at the dogs and a chat. I do have some grassland that i can run this time of year so you can see the dogs run a few. Vixens 20" and 32lbs, Sagars 21" and 34lbs I like this si -

chartpolski replied to midnight's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
If it's a Ped Whippet you are after, have a word with Mally, off here; he has a dog, Sagar, who looks the real deal.... never seen him, but I've seen his dam, Vixen, work many times, day and night, and I've never seen a better Ped Whippet working ! Have a craic with the lad, he'll show you the dogs working, and make your own mind up. Cheers. -
Just stripped out my Deer/Grey bitch; she is realy rough coated, but now, if you ignore her head, she looks like a Greyhound ! Cheers.

If you are talking about Non-Ped Whippets, there are some phenomenal small 'uns !! Skoshi Tiger is about 20lbs and doing unbelievable times and winning everything at the moment ! There are loads of dogs and bitches well under 22" that are running extremly well. A dog I like that's running realy well is Mazuma, he's around 30lb and doing well on straights and bends, and has recently got his Rch. Cheers. -
Borzos, Wolfhounds, Ibizans, etc. ??
chartpolski replied to chartpolski's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I saw this Borzoi x Collie in Scotland a few years back. Often wondered what the pups would be like if she were put to a decent Greyhound; Cheers. -
I'd of thought that was a good age to start training Cheers.

Now I know that these breeds have been ruined by the KC, but supposing there was some working strains around, and there wasn't a "Ban"; would any of us consider using them in a Lurcher breeding programme ? I ask because when Iwas at Selby, I had a craic with a couple of lads from Ireland, and they had five stunning looking Borzoi/Saluki/Greyhounds with them. They certainly looked the part, but could they actualy DO the job, the owner said they were good hare dogs, but he was selling them, so he wouldn't say they were rubbish !! LOL !! I know that in Australia, and to a lesser extent th

On the Greyhound or Whippet track, or the Coursing field, (when it was legal), "legend" status was hard to achieve but easy to proove, Ballyreagan Bob, Scurlow Champ, Good As Gold, Red Baron, Fullerton, Master McGrath, etc, were genuine Legends in their respective fields. In the Lurcher Coursing, there are many,Blondie, Lucky and others that can rightly be called "Legends"; but in the Lurcher work most of us do, lamping, foxing, etc, it's hard to proove what a dog is capable of, except to a few who see the dogs graft regularly. Some dogs ARE only "Internet Legends" and some who are REAL legen

Deer hunting with Lurchers, before the ban.
chartpolski replied to a topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Wasn't there something on TV a couple of nights ago about Elk being introduced into Scotland ? Cheers. http://www.thelocal.se/9152/20071120/ -
To try and answer the origional question...(?). I 'd say the Whippet cross was faster.........if not I'd be going to the track on a saturday morning to watch the "Non-Ped Saluki" Racing !!!!! Cheers.

Which cross would be faster...???
chartpolski replied to falconman's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
deer/grey would get beat in the turn with the we dog definitely, that's why I would never have one. Acceleration and turning speed is far more important than out and out speed IMO. Why do people generalise ?? "A Deer x cannot turn", "Bull x is slow", "Whippets can't take the cold"..etc, etc. !! I've got a 29" Deer x bitch that sticks to her quarry like shit to a blanket !! And I'd bet she's not the only one !! Makes me wonder if the people who make these comments have actualy got any in-depth experience of running dogs ! Cheers. I wish i had your experience charp i maybe know -

A historical question: really carefully formulated LOL
chartpolski replied to skycat's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Walsh, Sheardown, Plummer, et al;....Did they actualy DO a lot of work with Lurchers; or were the dogs just an apendadge to help them sell books ? Cheers. -

I know lads that lamped in the 50's and 60's.......... you could allways tell a lamper by the way his Barbour jacket pockets were rotted out by the battery acid from the motor bike batteries !! LOL !! Cheers. -

chartpolski replied to skycat's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
When I started back in the 60's, (o.k., not that far back in the grand scheme of thing), hare was the main Lurcher quarry for me, then rabbits, then deer. As it was all daytime,we didn't see as many foxes as we would when lamping took off ! Foxes were the quarry of the Terrier men, and they were welcome to them as far as we were concerned... you couldn't sell a fox in the pub, or eat it, so they were generaly avoded. When we started lamping, somehow foxes became fair game, and some lads changed the types of dogs they ran to reflect this. So I would suppose it was the change over from daywalkin -
Which cross would be faster...???
chartpolski replied to falconman's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I've got a 23" Beddy/Grey/Deer/Whippet, and she's fast ! When she's runing alongside my 29" f1 Deer/Grey, her legs sem like a blur, yet the Deer cross looks like she is just loping !! Then the Deer cross changes gear and the speed REALY shows ! So, some big dogs can look slow, and little dogs can look fast, it's when they are running together you can see the difference ! As for a 3/4 Collie being as fast or faster than an f1 Deer x........ Cheers. -
would your dog return to you mid course?
chartpolski replied to Lukehunt's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
If I had a dog that could be called off mid course......it wouldn't be with me for long !! Cheers. -
Is that Bosun11 who is a new Moderator ? Cheers.

Then you haven't a clue how the 'net works !! c**ts can cause trouble just by typing !! Am I missing something??, you claim to know the guy and then you're asking if he's sending viral emails. As stated if you have to ask, you can't know him. Just an observation. I know Tom very well, I'm trying to make him aware that there is someone sending viral e-mails in his name...as this post proves, I'm not the only one to have got it ! On facebook there are a lot of others who have got this viral e-mail.... I doubt very much that Tom has instigated it, and want people to be aware of it
