  1. as I have always said there is proper ferreting, clearing rabbits for the landowner and that means digging to ferrets getting backed up. then there is mooching, picking off a few from small setts, as you go.
  2. size can vary greatly in litters. I have 2 dark Jill's one is a small lean jill which struggles to hold a rabbit just how I like them. the other is a lot stockier and heavier, built like a hob.
  3. British gas are looking for chaps like you katchy?
  4. I like these small Jill's, i call them a poachers ferret. small setts around 6 holes they bolt rabbits well. what doesn't bolt they come off after 15 minutes or so. ideal when you can't be hanging around digging. now if your lucky enough to have permission and are doing a proper day's ferreting stick to the bigger Jill's or hobs?
  5. I all I have ever done is recall and stock breaking. everything else comes naturally.
  6. some can call a dog off when it's on its quarry. I can't and I would be disappointed if I could. there are far better people than me with mutts but it would always be in my mind if it was fully committed?
  7. as you have said before they are very hard to find nowadays. plus they don't suit everyone. I would imagine it's hard keeping them that way with that amount of work.
  8. I like what I call a do or die dog, catch at all cost fully committed. I don't like a thinker or clever dog, been told before that the dog is thick because she tries for rabbits sat against hedge other end of the field. had a dog years ago decent catch dog but she started stalking, drove me nuts, just fxxxcking get on with it.
  9. its like anything in life trev the more you do you become experienced at it, very few dogs get the work or rabbits yours do, no wonder she's using her head, she's a cracking little dog ?
  10. some of us keep small ferrets because we don't want to be digging. when you are somewhere you shouldn't be you want a ferret to bolt rabbits or come off after 15 minutes or so, you can't afford to be hanging around.
  11. I am no expert but the z means it's twisted nylon as apposed to spun nylon. the number is the breaking strain. 4z means 40 pounds, 6z 60 pounds, 8z pounds. 4z is the thinnest and best for night netting it tangles rabbits up lovely. 6 and 8 are better for daytime ferreting, they can stand a bit more heavy duty around hedges, brambles etc. netrigger and Mr Wilkes on here could advise you better as they understand twines far better than me?
  12. heard a lot of good things about his whippets, also a few swear by other lines as well. I have always fancied one someday.
  13. to say that dog was driven is a bit of a understatement. just how I like a little rabbiting dog. did you not think of getting one from the same lines or do you just think it's pot luck how he turned out?
  14. just before covid I would say going rate for a ped was £800. beddywhippet had just started fetching about £400.who knows were it will all end?
  15. I don't think prices will ever go back to what they were. vast majority of whippets, lurchers go to pet homes and they seem prepared to pay it. as people that work them we are very much the minority.
  16. the emotions always get the better of you, nothing wrong in that. remember old chap telling me, he worked with a lot of miners, 10 pints a night men who were regularly fighting Saturday nights in the welfare, but when the Whippet died there was plenty of tears ?
  17. seen him on YouTube grand little dog ?. what lines is he working, racing?
  18. you can't beat a tryer ?. they are not the easy meat some believe. seen them virtually on end of dogs nose and still make it up a tree.
  19. I know it might sound daft, but are you getting the wind right and approaching the set right?
  20. same here tomo local mutts were fed bounce or chappie ?
  21. Well I have a beddywhippet and I am still waiting for my first coyote
  22. you going soft in your age?. I think she deserves it ?
  23. mate sent me this, he saw them this morning. he thinks things were getting hot and they were dumped. who knows?
