  1. Can't help but agree, if you go for an ASE try before you buy (if you can). I had an S5 many years back now, it was heavy, and whilst it was well made and pretty good at moderation it caused balance issues on the rifle!
  2. Whatever your definition of small game is, a .22lr can accommodate a lot. You really need to get land first and find what quarry is on it, then tailor the rifle to your requirements. No region is going to give you any rifle for land/quarry you don't have. Alternatively, join a club, get some experience/rifles/contacts!
  3. Everyone has the best moderator for them, and they are all different. Only you can decide on type/size/weight/price/etc. There is very little between them all from a moderation point of view, but stick to one as calibre specific as possible. The P8 Compact works for me as a package! .223 .243 .308
  4. I don't think many would disagree at all, but the real world just isn't that simple sometimes!
  5. Whilst we have every right to jump up and down about inefficiencies, in the case you mention there does not seem a great deal that can be done. Even a Temporary certificate will not allow you to buy ammo!
  6. I'm really not following the OP, is it a wind up, very wrong on several levels!
  7. Worst case...circa £30 each way for shipping (less if they are shipping more than one rifle) circa £40 for proof (less if they are sending more than one rifle). So that's £100. Yet they are charging £140 (apparently). Around £120 for cut thread crown and proof from a TOP man round here. £200 is taking the Michael!
  8. It isn't usually that difficult to find the dens, and nobody sets out with the intention of causing suffering. I have land where foxes are an asset and we leave them, and land where they are public enemy No1. There can be no sentimentality when a job has to be done!
  9. £200 to cut and proof...someone is taking the Michael!
  10. Never say never, lots of people get an Open/Unrestricted FAC at first grant, but admittedly the majority don't seem to. Mentoring has been done away with in just the same way every region have been advised to use AOLQ. Never take anyones word for land being cleared, always check with the region yourself.

If you use rodenticides in accordance with directions and the Law, making sure they are in species specific and tamper proof containers where required, the chances of poisoning none target species are as close to Zero as you can get. Secondary poisoning also offers a VERY SMALL risk if you use rodenticides appropriately.

    You cannot use Brodifacoum Externally!
  13. I need the hull of my boat cleaned, only the area below the water line, it is only river so just a bit of light weed, it was also out of the water and cleaned thoroughly only 18 months ago so it will probably only need a light cleaning. Boat is on the Thames near Henley, on a private mooring with a private landing stage. Money is available for this task, or perhaps a contra deal of a day out on the boat, or perhaps a diving trip on the boat. If you are up for it, or know someone who may be, please PM and we can discuss details. Cheers
  14. Well, that's FEO for you! It is not a legal requirement, although I don't deny I keep mine with my ammo as well. It is all but impossible if you think about it, what about semi auto .22lr/WMR and FAC air rifles, removing the bolt/firing mechanism can be far from easy!
  15. If he has land he can shoot on for "sport" then fine. Many people are allowed to shoot rabbits for pest control, and I get paid to remove rabbits, there is no sentimentality, no sport, just a job to be done, get rid, end of. People seem to confuse these two very different areas all the time.
  16. Any increase is a pain, regardless of whether "YOU" can afford it or not! I have been Coterminous for many renewals and it doesn't look as bad as it may have been. Whilst these figures are allegedly some representation of cost, as a matter of interest, does anyone know how the new charges stack up against inflation since the last increase?
  17. ...and that is the answer! The HMR is perfectly capable of stopping foxes in one shot, I did it yet again on Thursday night at 100 yards, 17g V Max, a big dog, just under 20lb. The HMR has issues, no question, but if you need what it does it can be a very useful tool. WMR was mentioned earlier, yet another very capable fox tool, as is the Hornet, and other .22centrefires, .243 etc etc. Each has a place and a use on foxes, none is better than the other per se, they are each as good as each other when used within their capabilities. PS Strangely perhaps I have not ha
  18. As SS said, The S7 will more commonly be issued to the spouse/family member/executor of a person the firearm/shogun was registered to. In the event that one has just been found with no material background/paperwork the chances of a S7 being issued will generally be slim to non existent!
  19. There are very few jobs that are all about shooting, Pest Control/farming/Gamekeeping/Etc., cover a MUCH wider area than carrying a gun around. I run my own Pest Control company, I'm a Deer mentor, Secretary of a club at Bisley, a shooting instructor and RCO, and trust me there and many days I don't touch a gun! I cherry pick my personal jobs and specialise in larger pest problems that commonly need shooting, but if I didn't cover ALL pests I couldn't make a living! PS Oh yes, Pest Control, etc is commonly about being up at silly o'clock, (I got home at 04.45 this morning),
  20. Convenience, your financial position, location, difficulty in finding ammo etc etc (it all comes down to money really!) ATB! Then bung fifty quid in the biscuit barrel before offering your FEO a biscuit with his coffee! And that little italic quote wasn't in the guidance you quoted, nor have I read it myself. Only the "purchase of economy" which I have accepted all along. That was my original wording, like I say, it all comes down to economy when you get behind it.
  21. Convenience, your financial position, location, difficulty in finding ammo etc etc (it all comes down to money really!) ATB!
  22. I certainly would not argue about some of that. 2002 and 2014 Home office Guide on Firearms Licensing Law 4.8 The bulk purchase of ammunition for the purpose of economy is not acceptable as good reason for possession. Possession of 250 rounds for deer stalking, and possession of 750 rounds for vermin control should generally be regarded as reasonable Economy is a term that could be interpreted widely, but the OP is clearly after delivery by post, or a higher allowance for the purpose of economy!
  23. You made a statement....... Born Hunter, on 05 Mar 2015 - 3:53 PM, said: He doesn't have good reason. As has already been mention earlier in this thread when someone was refused for just such reason. Many regions come up will all sorts of bull, some of which may be good and some not so good. The Guidelines/Law make it clear that convenience/economy is NOT a good/recognised reason for bulk buying. Some departments may take pity on him, just like some regions will NOT issue a .22lr for fox, some will tell you the HMR is illegal for geese and one at least issued ME with a SGC
  24. I am more than confident this is Law. The guidelines contain many quotes from Firearms legislation, so, much of what they quote is Law, there are of course guidelines as well. There was/is loads of Firearms Legislation, the 1968 was an attempt to combine it all into one Act, but a mass of other Acts (and amendment) have turned up since to complicate matters once again. So, whilst this is definitely listed in the Home Office Police Guidelines, I believe it is a reflection of the Law. But, as I don't have the inclination to spend time digging round the Acts I'll hold back on Law until
