Should I Trade In My .223 For A .204Or 20 Tac ?????????
Deker replied to GEOFF.223's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
A better round for what, is a .308 a better round than a .22lr; is a HMR a better round than a .243. No is the answer, they are different, and for what they ALL excel at, they are each the best! Only you can decide if you need/want/can justify, a change from your .223! -
Not posted any vids Dan although that is the only way to illustrate things online been as you can't witness live shooting on a forum. Rather than hating, maybe you should respect a differing opinion. I know plenty of people with .22-250 including someone I meet 7 nights a week in the pub who goes Roe Deer Stalking in Scotland with it several times a year. I've also gone on many a walk around with people with both .223 and .22-250. The terminal performance of .22-250 is the best I've seen from any .224 calibre bullet. That's just my opinion and you're free to disagree but personally I think

For whatever reason my .223, .243, and .308 each delivers 1" with PRVI SP (55g, 90g, 150g). Many want same hole, but for field work nothing is going to argue with 1". Others get shotgun patterns with PRVI, so I have a Big (and it's the main reason I don't bother reloading).

It's the same old story with ammo, you will need to try a few to see what works best for your rifle and quarry. My T3 .243 seems very happy with weights between 55g-90g, not so keen on 100g, but the difference it makes will not usually change the outcome of the shot. 90g PRVI SP works for me as an all rounder in the .243, that delivers 1" all day and is plenty good enough for me and field work when it is a .243 arriving. (I tend not to use more than one or two different types of ammo in rifles generally, I will tend to change calibre more than ammo if I need much difference, but I have

I think you will like .243 over the 22-250. Frankly I have never really understood the 22-250, the .243 does everything and more that a .22-250 can, with a much wider choice of ammo at no extra money generally. They are a pussycat to shoot and have a much wider field of use, as a long range fox round with the right ammo there is nothing to touch them in my view. Obviously there are some areas/jobs a 22-250 must come into its own, but I run .223 and .243 and with those the 22-250 is a waste of space for me.

I always chuckle when I see recoil given as a reason for not buying a more powerful .224 calibre. For god's sake a .22-250 it's a 55gr bullet driven by around 35gr of powder. A 12g shotgun drives 493gr of lead (32 grams) by around 25gr of powder producing noticeabley more kick and yet an average pigeon shooter or clay pigeon shooter will think nothing of firing -100 rounds, or more, in a morning (2-3hour period) compared to rifle shooters who may fire 2 or 3 rounds in a day!! I mean come on, recoil really? Noise is one thing, I can fully understand that some shooters may prefer mor

ADJECTIVE adjective: dedicated devoted to a task or purpose: exclusively allocated to or intended for a particular purpose: Why do people insist on using this term, there are very few dedicated rifles out there, and why on earth impose your own restrictions when applying for/using a rifle. On top of which you leave yourself wide open for criticism over your chosen dedicated calibres!
-
High seat as mentioned, buy or build it.
-
If you have a NEED for a bigger calibre then apply for it, regardless of what the land is cleared for its a waste of time/money getting a calibre you don't need! I have .243 and .308, main use of the .308 is Boar and target, the .243 gets more use, but then again my .223 probably gets more use than the .243.

Recalled! That's news to me, his excuse for not having any I suspect and selling you something more expensive...... that he just happened to have in stock. Split cases before and after firing are common on all makes of HMR ammo unfortunately!

There are very few bad makes out there so it is simply a matter of tailoring the rifle to your needs and pocket. Someone mentioned weight already, personally I just don't understand people who buy massive heavy rifles and walk round the fields all day, a complete waste of time and energy in my opinion, but then again some like them, such is life. This is very underrated in my opinion, I speak from first hand experience of its incredible performance and relatively modest price. http://www.czub.cz/en/catalog/81-centerfire-rifles-cz/KL/CZ_527_SYNTHETIC.aspx

 I guess because some find that extra 40-60 yards rather useful. As do those that find (for example) a Hornet, worth the extra cost/noise for an extra 40-60 yards over a HMR and then a .223 for the extra 40-60 yards over a Hornet, etc etc!...all of which will have wind drift issues as well if you push things!

What Deer Calibre For First Deer Rifle.

You have a very different pair of eyes to me! -
SD So just why is that a problem with the HMR, exactly the same can be said of the .22lr. As a big generalisation the wind drift on the .22lr at 65 yards is the same as a HMR at 100 yards. You can't blame the calibre for a shooter pushing their luck. In simple terms the .22lr is a -100 yard max tool in my book, the HMR is 140-160 yard max tool, at those distances both have a very similar wind drift. If you use a .22lr at 60 yards and a HMR at 180 yards the HMR will obviously be worse. I hear the HMR being slagged off for being susceptible to the wind all the time, I honestly can't

You need to read my post and all will be clear. You miss quoted me, end of. That has nothing to do with caveat. -
+1. I couldn't have put it better myself. I never quite follow this wind drift malarkey, yes they move, but nowhere near as much as .22lr generally, so why does HMR get all the bad press about wind drift when .22lr is worse? Compare a few for yourself here... http://www.federalpremium.com/products/rimfire.aspx

What Deer Calibre For First Deer Rifle.
Deker replied to shropshire dan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Definately not then. But equally, I don't think I've said anything that contradicts the laws of physics. If an object in motion carries more energy than a similar object in motion with less energy, then it takes longer to slow down unless the forces of friction are so great as to negate the difference. I'm sure BH can correct me with the correct equation for all of this, but I believe the basic premice is true. If something is travelling faster and has more energy it takes longer to slow down. ...and misquoted me! Not sure I in any way misquoted you Deker. You Said "Ther -

That was pretty much my reaction at the time...what the **** does the RSPCA know about Deer Stalking? -
.22-250 For Deer North Of The Border
Deker replied to shropshire dan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I have no doubt the BDS played its part as usual but ....... Roe was included for .22 as the Deer Act Amendment headed towards its final reading, the bill was presented to the RSPCA at that stage, who concluded (despite Scottish evidence) they could not be sure .22 was humane for Roe, they never actually said it was not suitable, so, in a last minute PC change Roe was removed from the bill. Edit Unfortunately I was a victim of this, having been watching the progress of the Deer Act Amendment and having long considered the .240 (.243) more than required for Roe, Muntjac, CWD I jumped t -
Is There Any Law In Owning Two Rimfires?

Good luck to you and each to their own but I have to question it's suitability for use in Woodland. Obviously, lost of people use a wide assortment of rifles in woodland, but if I was starting from scratch looking for a woodland rifle for deer, that would not be on the list. Shortish barrel, synthetic stock and light would be my thoughts, pretty much everything "cz 550 stutzen or a steyr mannlicher full stock" aren't. ATB!

Indeed, lots of people have 2 or more, I currently have 2, and at one point I actually had 3 x .22lr on my FAC.
