Have to agree, never done shifts, but I have done 12 hours days or more sometimes.....physical work......people used to say to me 'ah, but it keeps you fit'......fcuk off it sucks the life out of you!

Absolutely, we are lucky in a way that English is so international, I'm a lazy twat, I'll admit that....what makes it worse is my wife is French & she speaks 6 languages & is learning a 7th!.......if I don't pull my finger out soon, my boy & her will be talking a language I don't understand......& that's not good.....Yeah, the rest of the educated world see English as a necessity, it's the universal language. Leaves me feeling a little embarrassed not being fluent in other languages but at the same time lucky and proud that my native language is the number 1. LOL. Also a notea

I know I'm bad, lived here 2 years now & don't speak the language......there's 2000 Brits live in my little town, I never hear any of them try & speak Flemish in the shops.......must piss the locals off, it would piss me off lol

Yeah, they're professional career soldiers who are trained by methods developed over hundreds of years of conflict. But the wars have changed too.... One thing is for sure, it should never be taken for granted the mental stress these lads have been under, regardless of the era or conflict....

I guess we've just googled conflicting info then, mine said 4months out of the year, broken by rotation.......anyway, I'm sure you'll agree that today's soldiers are physically fitter & better mentally prepared for war, than those yesteryear....

A quick look reveals that in the 1st world war, the average infantryman could expect to spend on average 4 months in front line trenches, combining their individual stints.......plus the awful conditions we know they often had to bare, If you also add that those poor soldiers would of been no where near as fit or mentally prepared as today's soldiers might be, Would it not of been comparable with today's stress levels experienced in combat?
