Cretan Lion Hound, an ancient breed
Bosun11 replied to kriti's topic in Wildlife and General Photography
Ancient... As old as the Corgi that had just come out of the salon... I predict a big future for the breed... -
Good to see that members off here posting on this show, because it really should get the attention it deserves and there were plenty of THL members there too. Oh yer, Brickie, when he turned up he looked like an advert for Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village, told him so too! Only to find he'd just ran the Chester Half Marathon that morning and dashed away to make the show..!! Now there's dedication for ya. There was one other thing on the day that did take a fair bit of attention off the dogs but made the show even better... In a grubby white vest....

Predominantly a lamper, mine are fed evenings, so there is plenty of time to digest their grub from the night before. If they've had a run out in the day, I may give 'em a drop of egg n milk a few hours before a hard night but not always.

Jimmy, its all about finding a speck (fields) where there are a few bunnys about and no-one would mind you going for a walk there, pref early morning or as the light is fading in the evening. Or you could do as Paulus says and try it on the lamp, best finding someone who gets out a bit and ask if you could go with 'em and give yours a try. Best of luck.

As always, Chirk was a great day out today, its the one show I really hate to miss, cracking location, great turn out, cracking dogs and most of all very well run. Well done the lads of The North Wales T&L Club.

The prices quoted will be the ruination of the breed as a worker, i've no doubt of that. Most genuine terriermen value the dig as much as the dog and if you can dig to a terrier, either gifted or bought for sensible money, why would you want to pay these extortionate prices for a Border and the same job done?? I've always fancied a (full) Border and never owned one, had the chance in the past with both Levi & Jeff, (even Cunnigham-Rice!!) but I never took one on, shame really, because if these are the prices nowadays days, I'll stick to them cheapo Park dogs that i've had many a goo

Very nice Midnight -
That lad'll need crampons on them wellys in a month or two to hold that pup. Nice pic...

Yer Fred, though it ain't a gut hook in its propper sense, simply ground the top edge near the point, the knife can be used either way. Though did feck up the minute I did it (years back) and popped it back in its sheath same as always and went right through the side of it splitting the stitches. Like I said I bought it years back Fred, there used to be a little shop in Southport that specialised in allsorts of cutlery, with one window chock full of quality outdoor knives, a kid back then (16/17), I was looking for a genuine skinner and asked the old bloke behind the counter, he said he h

Look who's judging this show!!
Bosun11 replied to The Breeder's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Great old pic Keep digging 'em out, see if ya find some more. -
You can get a stripping comb, they work on smaller dogs much better than a hacksaw blade, other than that its fingers, thumbs and a whole load of patience, taking care to strip back only small ammounts at each pluck. Stripping is a long flustrating task (for me it always was!!) but when done right, far better than shears for your dogs coat.

if it works for foxhounds
Bosun11 replied to Coyotehunter's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
I'd agree with most in that IMO it is not only daft but dangerous for running dogs, especially sommat with the take off speed of a whippet. Skycats bob on too, its used on hounds because they pack, terriers because one may 'drop in' unnoticed and in both cases the youngster is usually of equal size and substance to its partner, simply no need to couple running dogs, I genuinly can't see what the'd 'learn' from it... -
Fred I've had one of these for years, nearly 30!! For an 'off the peg' skinner n gutter they do the job very well. Though I did grind the 'top drop curve' (dunno the propper name!) down as a cutting edge too. Though I'm determined to get a 'Midnight made' doobie as soon as...

I don't go much to shows but I can't agree with you at all about this. First I don't see that the standard of working lurchers has fallen much. I've kept lurchers for almost 40 years and the standard has always been variable. There have always been poor workers and it's always been necessary to look around a bit to find a good working litter. Secondly, people who want good working lurchers won't book a pup from a non working, show bred litter anyway (unless they're a bit thick). If working dog people only buy their pups from working litters the show craze will have no effect at all. There ar

First off let me say, I fecking hate constant barkers, its one thing I really will not tolerate. All my mutts are taught from an early age that barking is not allowed, with the exception of strange noises, which I will then investigate with them and they will get 'some' praise. With all my dogs this has been the case and couple this up with a decent life and free run of 'our' space (garden) when all are at home, then they soon know what is theirs to protect and act accordingly. We had an attempted burgalary to one of the houses at the back last year, it was my dogs that raised the alar

Have you any idea when he done that, must of been a year's ago, just as a matter of interest. The rat in Liverpool has bee there years, i've no idea when it was done.

Borzos, Wolfhounds, Ibizans, etc. ??
Bosun11 replied to chartpolski's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
My mate had a dog with about a quarter Borzoi in it in the 's, big an fast, it could kill hares and foxes but was injury prone. I'd agree with Simo, in that there is more than enough choice here already from well tested stock. -
Damn shame, great fan of the Beasty Boys...

Good art is good art, whatever form it may come in... Though I've always liked Banksy, ever since he done the rat in Liverpool, good graffiti can be spectacular but its the lot that don't see it in an artistic form and 'tag', usually very badly that get my goat.

My first dog was still catching into her teens, back then I was too young and too keen to ever think of her retirement, as long as she still worked, she was out! Paulus, she looked a bit like your old dog in the pic, snow white head on a younger 'looking' brindled body. Sadly and stupidly I listened to others, who's younger mutts were getting beaten to the punch by a very expierienced brain and stopped taking her out. To see her decline from fit, healthy and active to a skeletel wreck in months was sickening... Never again, they run till they drop or go 'to live on a farm'...!!!

Evening feed for me, usualy not long before bed, suits with lamping and settles 'em down for the night, mornings are for a walk to empy out. Fast about once a fortnight.

Whithin it we have some quality fieldsports folk and fantastic posts and threds on the most interesting and informative subjects. Yer, of course there can be ten ton of shite to trawl through sometimes to get to the good stuff but it's an open forum and if your
