  1. Molly back in her prime proper beast back in the day lol
  2. Cheers for the comment folks, she will be heading the vets at the end of the week and having stewed on things I am at peace with my decision tbh. She has had a great innings with me and despite the fact she would probably bimble in for a few more months, she just hasnt been right for a good while now and despite eating well she isn't wanting to move and has had a few accidents in the house lasted weeks, which stresses her and the other dogs out. I have had her since 9 weeks old she will never forgotten and I could write a book about some of her antics in her youth, including some funny moments
  3. Yes strong scent in jacket as worn daily and smells of the other dogs as well, plus i never wash it lol terriers aren't daft always found they follow there path back when generally the same route they took in the line out atb
  4. She is a bouvier and taught me a lot about dogs she has tested my patience many a time in her youth but she has been loyal beyond belief and brilliant with the family. She is eating well but rarely wants a walk nowadays which I think is linked to get battered feet tbh as she has arthritis and is physically not a patch on her younger days. I think in my head i know she has probably had enough and tbh it isn't great seeing her stay in bed whilst the others fly up when the walking jacket goes on. I am off work next week and will be saying goodbye at the end of the week i think, cheers for the com
  5. Been coming along time, but I guess I will have a difficult decision to make in the near future. Got an old dog here almost 12 year old and she is not that far from the end i guess, had her from 9 weeks old and she has seen off a marriage, various military postings and good knows how many miles running with me in her youth. Question is when is the right time to take the one way trip to the vets and say goodbye to my old friend, some days she looks at me as if to say I have had a good innings but the time is right, but then just occasionally she shows some signs of her youth, but these are few
  6. i have similar scenarios on a fairly regular basis with my little terrier less so as she matures, but there is a difference between running off and following scent and despite the frustration and occasional concern, on reflection i often think to myself if I have spent the past few years encouraging her to find game and she has that natural desire to do so, then can i really get peed off when she goes awol, conclusion i have come to is no I can't and the i would be a little concerned if she didn't followed a line . As has been said just have to enjoy the fresh air and admire there drive. All
  7. My oldmans beddy grey has been put to a good collie x grey, scans show 7 pups. They have been bred for own use but there may be pups available should be a nice x IMO and both parents seen plenty of work. If you want more info pm they are based in staffs and due mid jan atb
  8. This lad I have is essentially the same mix touch of collie mainly whippet and touch of grey. He is only a young dog but he suits me fine for the bunnies and is a very biddable dog. To date he has had a fair few scrapes but touch wood has a knack for avoiding anything serious which was my main concern when I got him.
  9. The wire haired pointers are generally known to be decent guarders tbf
  10. I have a schnauzer her that has hunted with working dogs his whole life he loves it. Is he any good? Not really when you compare him with a decent purpose bred dog but still take him along for the exercise as he is here to stay. Won't be getting another mind as enjoy the ones purpose bred a hell of a lot more tbh I love a tryer but love a successful tryer more
  11. I have found a lot more enjoyment having a running dog working alongside a little bushing dog or two, especially if game is hard to come by as They tend to gee each other on and more importantly for me they enjoy each other's company in down time. Some months I barely see a rabbit on the land we wander daily in the daytime, if so the lamp comes out for some nights for the running dog but he is just as happy in my eyes wandering the daytime and working his knackers off to find anything little bit of action on offer.
  12. If you don't have any joy and would consider a pup I know of a beagle x Plummer pup which has been gifted to my uncle for stud duties of his lurcher. I haven't seen the pup (only 7 week old) but it sounds decent x for bushing work. If I had room I would probably have it myself tbh I don't know a great deal about the pup tbh but could find out more if interested, I do know it comes from a working home and has been breed for purpose atb
  13. I agree to an extent but some dogs nails do need sorting out no matter what exercise they get. I have a little terrier here who gets the same exercise as the other 3, in fact she covers far more ground than 2 of the others but her nail position means they never get worn. Before her I had never had to trim a nail on a dog as they took care of themselves, so it's not quiet as straightforward as exercise on some mutts atb
  14. Lovely little pup that looks similar to mine as a pup tbh. Be good to see how it turns out always liked the look of the oakbark whippet line as they seem to be a nice make up atb
  15. I have found autarky decent stuff and tried a lot over the years can get delivered via amazon for around £21 per bag atb
  16. Met a group of lads on their way out on the land I walk daily just a few days ago, they were clearly not locals having a had a quick chat with them, they had 4 saluki types dogs in tow middle of summer red hot day ground is bone hard, sweetcorn growing on most of the land and they were clearly out coursing? Come colder weather and winter months I never see a soul on the same land. Strange world.
  17. It's a bit like life in general if somebody feels the need to big things ups, whether it be a dog or anything else, then generally speaking they are lacking something in my experience. I put this down to the fact those best at most things are generally those that spend time doing whatever IT may be, rather than trying to convince others how good they or their dogs are at IT. We also seem to be living in a world where alot of people need to have a pat on the back for anything they achieve, rather than gaining intrinsic value from achieving and effort jmo
  18. I must be missing something as my lurcher has never wore a collar is his 2 years to date little rope lead does me fine. On the occasions when we do lamp I reserve loop it around his neck as a slip lead, never liked collars on dogs full stop tbh appreciate the craftsmanship mind atb
  19. The repetitive impacts of trotting increases the circulation of the fluid in the joint which allows it to pick up more oxygen and nutrients, these are then pumped into the spongy joint cartilage via the pumping action of the joint itself which results in healthy tissue. At the same time joint repair genes are activated to rebuild damaged cartilage. Tendons and their attachments increase in size giving improving structural strength and reducing potential for injury. As trotting shouldnt be creating major impacts or twists and turns the risk of injury is minimal, so lots of positives, minimal ne
  20. As has been said I am not one for letting the dogs get unfit during the summer for no other reason really than I can't do without getting out for a few hours a day with them and this keeps them ticking over. Never really understood the whole jogging or biking dogs miles on end tbh as it's not really specific to how most running dogs work in the field. Yes it may build cv fitness levels up but so will more specific work related to what they do in the field jmo atb
  21. I can only speak from experience of the dogs I have all of which are completely different breeds (4 in total) they all have their own traits and characters but I strongly believe they have followed the lead from the eldest dog who I certainly put the most training and work into she has in my eyes set the time for the pack as she is very calm and pretty well trained the rest have followed suit despite all being different types. Generally dogs in packs spend a hell of a lot more time with each other than with their owners and I definitely think an elder sensible dog has a massive influence on up
  22. When my oldman used to do it we always measured the spine of the terrier pup from base of neck to base of tail and then did the tail a third of that measurement seemed to do the trick as it was more in proportion for each individual pup atb
  23. I suppose if you can ensure that such dogs are never given the opportunity to be a risk and managed accordingly then it's each to there own. But for me personally if any dog bit a human it would be it's last action no matter how useful a mutt it was and I would take such incident personally as a failure on my part jmo
  24. Difficult without seeing the dog but have had a dog with reverse sneezing (not a terrier) and it's quiet common in dogs and sounds similar to your description google it plenty of info on it atb
