Advice On Getting My Terriers To Start Working
terryd replied to Landscaperluke's topic in New Member Introductions
If you want to start it on rabbit then from the moment it can waddle about is fine just get out in the country with it but don't over do it as a pup obviously and make it walk miles but at six months just get out there now. I used to carry mine and put it on the floor while I ran the ferret through any possible holes. I can remember it like it was yesterday and his head cocking to the side when he heard a rumble. He turned into the best rabbiting dog I will ever have just through being out there. You can skip the rats they won't be needed. Mine then proceeded though the quarry list on his own -
Maybe some one could over lay a grid of sorts and you could pick the square number as I suspect down loading and editing and uploading might be a bit awkward

Well after our run around the beach this morning which was a great start to the day. Just a piss about really on point I popped down the allotment and left him stretch out having a kip back home then and a bit of grub then grabbed the 410 and two decoys to go and check out what the pigeons were upto. Typically there was a fair few flying around so I wished i had the decoys and the gear. The dog makes me chuckle he knows exactly whats going on and scans the skies looking for pigeons and when he hears the safety go off he knows exactly whats about to happen. No

Often thought about artichokes be interesting to see some pictures as they grow. I planted some horse radish this year not really sure why as I am the only one that likes it -
Brilliant pictures why would folks not enjoy them they are great. Even folks neck deep in rabbits catching day in and day out

I had a russell 14 inch tts and broad chested he worked fine. No idea what kg he was though Guess it depends what your after as well. I remember mine getting a fox out of a set of rabbit holes once in a hedge row when we were ferreting. I was amazed there was a fox in there but there was. Though I did have to dig on a little bit that time. That was a good day with a few rabbits and a fox. Jack of all trades him literally lol

You don't like Hazel John or are they for a quickset ?

Maybe not then Fingers crossed for next season for you. Sure mine spent half of this one on a lead recovering from one thing or another. I don't wish for the next season to come along quick any more. You never know how many of them you have left so best to make good use of and enjoy the summer months too

how do u know difference between fox and badger earth
terryd replied to trinder's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
The department are snaring them in my area but still their numbers soar, also there are a lot of farmers who are happy to leave them be, their thinking behind this is that if you remove a badger that is not a problem or carrying tb then you are freeing up territory for a potential tb carrier to move in. You need to be on your permissions regular to monitor their activities to save any hassle for free running terriers. Thats an interesting point of view of a farmer never thought of that. Yes you need to know your ground if you have a terrier off lead if its a keen one. Luckily I have a -

how do u know difference between fox and badger earth
terryd replied to trinder's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Thirty years ago there was plenty back then but the numbers were just right and they mostly stuck to out of the way places and pretty easy to avoid. Still the odd one would pop up else where but nothing like now. Day time sightings were really rare back then but not now a days. Loads of local farms have field edges pitted by bloody great big holes that just keep getting bigger and a right pain for stock and tractors. Also hedge rows that are decimated by holes. Then the odds of a problem when walking your dog its all not good boo lol -
Me and the wife have sod all so there won't be nothing for the girls to argue about unless they have scuffle over me Long netting from peg to peg book But wills definitely bring out the worst in folks at times

Because they are now in plague proportions now a days they can turn up any where they won't just be in the obvious citadels that take over half a wood. They keep spreading and digging out new spots mostly rabbit holes. Just glad I don't have a terrier any more but if I did I would just stick to the least looking used fox earths I new of and avoid any thing that looked like old brock had tried to enlarge it -
Be a bit firm with the docs politely of course but if you want some test doing just insist and steer them a bit and don't worry about returning until they do what you need.

I wish tripping over the bloody things

The vet gave mine an anti inflammatory and it he got in a right state. The wife had a read up and turned out collie crosses can have an adverse effect. The vet never asked if he had collie in him and I never thought to mention it. But i will keep an eye out in future

Well been digging for victory the last few days. Got plot number two pretty much done as that where the spuds need to go. Heavy clay but got a couple of rows of earlies in. covered the old strawberry bed until we are on top of every thing then that can be dug over made a start on plot no 1 tonight. Soil is much lighter and turns over a treat so we can rattle along nice. this fella is a real asset the lazy bugger though he did tell me there was a mouse in the compost surplus veg heading for the compost though some of the leeks may head for a so -

At 8 months mine was constantly giving me the run around. As I found out they need time, time and more time. Now at 3 years he does the right thing for the most part because he wants to please me and we just get on. Give it another 3 years for the final wrinkles to be ironed out and we should be about right If he wasn't coming back just stick him on a long rope and give it time there are far worse sins he could be committing. But anyway maybe for the best
