    Anybody watch that programme last night, vet performed surgery on a deerhound that had broken its neck, complex operation but 5 days after surgery dog was mobile again, probably have to remortgage your house to pay for it, but seems there are some decent vets out there after all.

    Some fair points on a dog differentiating between ferrets and other Mustelidae. My dogs have only once killed a stoat purely from the fact that they were near enough when it exited a warren i was ferreting. A friend of mine had a beddy cross that couldnt really be trusted on ferrets , but would ignore squirells, and yet would kill a fox or feral cat with ease. Fact is stoats and weasels are i wont say pound for pound, but gram for gram are the bravest and most ferocious predators in britain , Barring all these mysterious unseen large cats.

    Sign of the times im afraid, savage sentence for such a trivial thing, good job transportation isnt still an option. Problem is there are loads of self appointed gamekeepers among the public these days, who have nothing better to do.     So the population of york or jorvic as it was known under viking rule doesnt have any descendants of the scandinavian heritage, strange a lot of the language is interspersed with danish as are a lot of the place names, unless they were gay or celibate i find this hard to believe , only orkney residents have significant viking dna even harder to believe. Mind you based on 2000 residents if you did this survey in bradford or luton i think youd find that 90 per cent of the population of british people hailed from the indian sub continent.

    About thirty years ago i was walking through a deserted chalkpit that was on some land i used to shoot, rounding a corner on the track i saw a rabbit sat about 8 feet in front of me, all of a sudden it started to squal and at the same time there was a brown flash darted out of some rocks about 4 feet from it.     Collies xs the original lurcher, often said a one man dog for a one dog man, either love them or hate them, but for me collie blooded lurchers take some beating, prime example last week we were bolting to ferrets young lad brought his 2yr old lurcher with us. my mates old collie grey was standing backstump to a 50 yd length of briars my collie grey beddy grey covered the end 40 yds from the ferrets, young kids dog darting around like a headless chicken, had 4 bolted lost 1 and beddy collie cross accounted for 3.     Worked down there on and off for about ten years in the 80s campden, islington, couldnt wait to get home, and when i got home couldnt wait to get back, just the craic when your younger.     Bit of a shock coming from the DM.Anyone with any knowledge of the countryside knows this disneyfied program is a joke. How can you have respect for its presenters when you hear such inane questions like the one john craven asked when sat in a pen with two polecats, do they bite he said ? OMG.     Always been a subject of intrest to me, as said the smithfield would have gone into decline with the arrival of the railways.I would have thought that the drovers dogs of the 19th century wouldnt have resembled the modern day view of the smithfield lurcher, the penalties for poaching were far to severe to own a dog that would draw attention to the owner, bearing in mind that the drovers trails passed through many well keepered estates,.     As bird said bull has been in lurchers and whippets for donkeys years, the brindle in greyhounds is reputed to originate in the bull or mastiff type hounds from centuries ago. One thing i will say is i dont go a bundle on a lot of bull type crosses, purely from the image that a lot of bullx owners portray loads of half wit owners round my neck of the woods. Think the internet has had an influence on the type of dogs owned nowadays aswell.
