Third time out and about with Arry off the forum and his mate Bry today. Tough going and called it a day after four in the bag after a couple of hours and a soaking. Some young about also which added more hassle. But all in all great to be out even in the less favourable conditions. Cheers Arry really enjoyed it.
If I ever get another pup I would also invest in a tracker. I’ve never used one but I would like to think it would help to be in touch with the hunt and also if anything untoward happens to the dog. Maybe some other members can help out with the advantages of a tracker?
I think there are a lot more variables involved in dogs picking runs than just Collie in the dog.How old the dog is, how much work/lamping the dog has done. But I think one of the main reasons is how fit the dog is and how well rested it is between each work session. Just my take on things.
Looks like a traditional ferreting morning, but the reality is you can’t get a peg in the ground and your hands are fecking freezing. Still love weather like that though.
I’ve heard that some Borders can be very gun shy due to being quite sensitive types, obviously not all Borders are the same though.
Sounds like a nice day out nothing to serious, just how it should be.
When I used to lamp and if I remembered to ,I used to shake the lamp not sure it made any difference though. If the rabbit was really under pressure from the dog I’ve seen them panic and turn back out into the field.
The dog is bored, it needs to get rid of it’s pent up energy. Can you run with him or run him next to a bike. He needs some sort of activity to chill him out. A tired dog is a well behaved dog.
What’s the temperament like on these Mal crosses? The full Mals seem very high energy and fully focused, basically they need a lot of work is it the same with the Mal Lurchers?
