  1. Just a friends pups eyes are opening at 9 days. I bred 2 glenn pups a few months ago and it was nearly 3 weeks before eyes start opening. Them glens are lazy b*****ds,lol, only messing Raymond, that sounds like a long time for pups to open there eyes, usually 10.12 days.
  2. Cave ins really only occour in bad ground,ie,sand or what we would call running sand which i think is the worst of all soil to be diging in.Most lads will know the earths they dig and will allow for such things. If for instance we were diging down 6ft in sandy soil we will start the dig big enough to allow room to work when we get near the dog so we can break in properly, too small a hole and then it caves in and you are in trouble and so is the terrier, its all down to common sence, imho.
  3. Who ever it was they are only f*****g scum, and if and when they are finially caught they should be treated as such.
  4. My mate who owns a small driven shoot had 200 pheasents in a small holding pen ready for releasing out on the shoot grounds and a badger got in,even though it was electrified and killed the lot in one night, how he knew it was badger was he was out very early next morn feedind rides and checking traps as he also has a day job and the badger was still in the pen.I also know of a farmer who caught a badger taking a new born lamb,so there not as harmless as people make out.
  5. We had a dig last week alan, the ground is like iron still and unless we get a fair amount of rain soon its going to stay that way for awhile yet. Then you are probably like us and most other lads, young terriers to start so a few nice handy digs is the general thing this time of the year providing you have nice handy earths to dig,we tried a handy one last week which finished with an hour long dig through rocks and roots, but we got a result which is the main objective, hope everyone has a good season.
  6. When i went through dunshaulklin the only sign i seen was directly across from the entrance which read dog show, maybe i missed them along the road.
  7. I pulled up to the guy on the gate, told him we were for the dog show, he said oh that's right we have a paddock set up for ye up on the right and that'll be €2 a head kids and all. Same as that,i did'nt mind untill i was told it was nothing to do with the charity raising for temple st hospital.
  8. You must have been at a different show than me alan because the amount of terriers on show was a disaster compared to the westmeath. Not knocking the lads that ran it,fair play to them. There did seem to be a good few lurchers about but the terriers were scarce, only two borders for that class and they were a husband and wife team i think, they were definately together.5 terriers in the lakeland class,9 in the russell class, now how can you say it was the best regards dogs, also very badly signposted, there were signs for rathbeggan lakes and park but only 1 little sign with dog show on it just acros
  9. You should always have a gun with you to despatch the quarry these days. Lurchers have them dead so no need for gun.
  10. Mid october they should be ripe,i remember as a young lad picking them for halloween, also my diging buddy loves them so we cant go near any earths where there is hazel nuts or all he does is pick them and leaves the diging to the rest of the gang, lol.
  11. We always have the lurchers with us for a bolter or just for marking an earth. We very seldom get a bolt but at least there around if we do as we never have guns with us while diging and we dont use nets.
  12. 2 nice looking terriers scent, bit of a climber in the 1st one,lol them plastic kennells you've got,i had them and the dogs just chewed them to bits,b*****ds.
  13. Vet i use which is very seldom charges 20 euro all in,make the hubby pay, lol.
  14. Just take your time with the pup. When its old enough, say 9 months, give it a couple of handy runs on the lamp at rabbit and it will soon cop on to what it was bred to do at a later stage, but for now apart from breaking it to livestock and general everyday stuff, let it be a pup.
  15. I think by using an outcross, eventually the problem gets less and less, different if you kept breedind from your own stock,as for vets they only tell you what you want to hear and take your cash for telling you.lol.
  16. Ive still got the one ye brought me over all those years back,if that bar could talk, lol.
  17. IMO,if you are hunting rabbits with your diging dogs sooner or later they will go to ground on rabbit and when they do it once and get a taste for it its hard to stop them doing it again.
  18. The only problem i seen with my mates bitch was her bottom jaw stuck out like a sore prick and after only a handfull of digs she had lost nearly all her bottom teeth.
  19. I know of a litter of black pups on the ground at the minute. The sire was perfect in the mouth but the dam was very badly overshot on the bottom jaw,hog mouthed as i would call her,but the pups are all perfect even jaw lines.
  20. Tidy terriers liam,we will have a day out when i go to look at pups if thats ok with you,let you see that dog work for yourself, lol.
  21. Two right looking workers liam, the black.n tan looks like its smiling for the camera, lol.
  22. I have heard mates of mine across the water mention them ginger badgers, ive only ever seen the normal coloured ones.
  23. Make sure that there is not another dead one in her,if she is having such long periods between pups and then they are born dead there could be something wrong,i would advise a trip to the vets, best of luck with them anyway.
  24. Hunt i agree that with the invention of the locator things have changed for the better,ie,not as many dogs lost to ground and no need for goin around with your ear stuck to the ground trying to sound a dog,but as far as there been better standard of dogs about ,i have to agree with laner that the locator has made bad dogs look good and top class dogs look moderate. How many terriers will do an hour to ground and be dug to week in week out using the locator, but the same terriers ask them to do 3 or 4 hours to ground and there out behind your arse and had enough.I know that there are dogs that do
