  1. Nothing as good as seeing a young dog do the buisness for the first time, priceless.
  2. Id agree with you to a certain extent about giving pups for free but not just to anyone,i mean would you give someone a pup that you never met before or know nothing about.Fair play give them to lads in your circle or good diging lads you know who will give the pup a fair crack at the whip. Why would less dogs be stolen, the scum that steal dogs of any breed are not genuine dog men, there parasites and should be treated as such. id agree with that boss..a bag of food for the pup is fair exchange and at least sum thing has changed hands and its there pup then to genuine digging lads...but ones
  3. Again hunt that was down to the individual, some were maybe pts but a lot were bagged and used for the trials and then released.Back then was the same as now, keep killing the game and sooner or later it will be hard to find game.
  4. Some probably used multiple dogs but not all were the same hunt.I know a couple of men who are diging about 50 year or more and they would never contemplate doubling up dogs.I cant see why the dogs of today are any better than the dogs of old,if anything there not as good.Pre ban when brock was on the quarry list a lot of men were diging them with very game dogs as they had to be.A lot of the modern day dogs would not stay the distance with badger pre locator as the terriers of old did.A lot of the black dogs been bred today would be too hard to do the amount of time expected of a terrier in t
  5. Just out of curiosity hunt, have you dug to terriers pre locator. The difference now in my mind is you can enter a terrier in very deep places where you will get a result, where as before the locator lads were carefull to an extent where they entered a dog for obvious reasons. Before the locator terriers had to stay for very long periods of time before even been located let alone dug,so hard dogs were few and far between, and a sounder was the real deal then. Now you can vary the dogs used as they can be dug to in almost every situation. What would men like bert gripton frank buck and there era think

  8. As you said your used to looking at chunky bullx's,its a different type thats all, leaner and more racier, nice pup by the way, good luck with it in the future.
  9. Thats about it in a nutshell scent.
  10. Well if you got in a ring for a 12 rounder and you not fit how long would you last,2..3..rounds at most,so yes fitness has a big part in terriers coming away, then you will get the ones that want out anyway regardless wether there fit or not once they cant have it there own way.
  11. Myself and my mate were fishing on lene again today. We were trolling for trout or pike or anything that would take.Anyway as we came around one of the islands we noticed a chap landing what looked like a large fish,we could just see him net it as we were about 200yds away.We were looking across at him when he waved us over.We reeled in our own lines and went across to him.As we approached he thanked us for coming over and handed my mate a camera and asked would he take a few pics.My mate said no prob and then the chap proceeded to lift his net from the oppisite side of his boat to reveal a ver
  12. fatman i think you have double standards didn you buy a pup of one of the so called big names not so long ago you come on here tellin every one dont buy of the big names and you do exactly that and if my snoop is correct its 300 a pup from the same man who has 17 pups ordered to date As i said in mt last post i dont buy or sell pups, last pup i got was a gift by a friend,as it should be.
  13. Two ways to look at it sionnach, the driver is bound by law to stop whether he in the right or wrong, and secondly the chap that owned the dog could have been covered by insurance like nargc or some other form. Most lads i know are in gun clubs and are covered for this type of accident.
  14. Thats why the working terrier game is the way it is,money has taken over from work.Just look at the border for instance, people ask why there are not many working borders about.Well i think its a lot to do with them been priced beyond the working mans pocket,if they were at a more reasonable price there would be more lads interested in trying them.I dont sell pups or buy pups,if i have surplus pups there given to friends that will work them, and if i need a pup i can always go back to them down the line at some stage, and i think thats the way it should be,but there's always someone out there loo
  15. Bracken or fern is popular among spaniels.
  16. BB24 why dont you get to know someone thats at the diging game and ask can you come along with them come the season and that you will share the work load. Then you will see first hand what there dogs are like and who knows if they were alright lads they might offer you a pup or even better a young terrier ready for starting.Dont go rushing in buying a pup because it has a big name behind it,they usually turn out shite, better to get one from worker to worker, and a lot better if you get the chance to see them work.Good luck anyway.
  17. Good for you,but it certainly helps if you are brought up around hunting, let it be ferrets, lurchers or terriers. Most of the older lads around me hunted terriers when i was starting out,but that did not mean they would take you out with them.I bought my first terrier in about 1974 and then started to dig with a man who is long since dead now,but my first couple of years consisted of carrying the shovel and spade and holding dogs or running back to the car if something was forgot, which happened quite often. As he got older he sort of got out of dogs so i was left to paddle me own canoe, which i di
  18. i dont hunt foxes during the summer and he was looking to see what the dog was like and it was a big dog fox so he said so what do you want me to say fenman. The fox broke 40 yards from him so i guess he got itchy fingers and slipped. Scent i would'nt even try to explain to that pratt, the lads dog is dead and he is giving grief about out of season, did he get no of car, pisses you of when a young prospect gets finished like that.

  21. If that chef was with you last saturday eve he would be smiling, plenty to eat, lol.
  22. I only go to a couple of shows a year at most, and i dont bring terriers with me.First as you say there is no need to be walking around with a terrier and half its face missing, and secondly there are too many thieving scum bags about that could easily follow you home and then they know where your dogs are,it might sound stupid but it happens.I have to bring 1 dog to the westmeath show for a chap to see and that will be the first in about 18year and probably the last.
