Had a very good dog,3quarter lakey quarter wheaten. He was hard as nails but a great dog to dig to and never once failed us,would scream when on his way up to his game then bang all would go silent, only the sound of bumping as he made contact and thats where you dug.I had to put him to sleep last season aged about 9 as he was gone both deaf and almost blind but had got out on my daughter while she was giving him fresh water and was in an undigable shore for almost 3 days before finially coming away,to say he was a mess is an understatement so the right thing had to be done.Myself and the lads s

fat man replied to danny300's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Someone fit and able to use all them tools, even more on a sunday morn with the after affects of sat-nite. -
traditional or technological???
fat man replied to KawValley's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
The european badger,PRE-BAN did not bolt too easily either, most had to be dug to.The t-bar was a tool used to try to locate the terrier with also a lot of lying about on wet cold ground listening for the faintest sound of the dog and then trying to pin point it as near as possible.Sometimes the bar would drop into the tube, depends on dept, our bar would be about 5ft in lenght and then the dog could be heard a lot clearer so a dig would be started. Why put a terrier in a position where its life is in danger when there is no need for it,some will argue the terrier is not doing the time to ground l -
traditional or technological???
fat man replied to KawValley's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
I have worked terriers pre-locator but think it would be very irresponcable to put a terrier in the ground now without one on.Back then it was nearly all sounders that were used as a hard silent type was of little use in any earth with a bit of depth to it and most of the big deep places were a no.no where as now you can practaly drop a terrier in most places that are diggable as the locator systems get better all the time. Now we can keep a varity of terrier types, hard, sounders, dont matter as we can locate them pretty easy but i would like to think if something went wrong like a collar failing -
I think it also depends on the type of terrier,ie hard, sounder that you kennell.A couple of sounders will probably get you through a season but when you keep a hard type you will need at least 4 to 6 terriers about you.I also like to have at least 1 youngster coming on each season and its a great feeling when you get the 1st dig to a youngster.

Took the springers for a run this morn.I went to a big area of stubble that has good heavy ditches and a couple of drains run through it so always a chance of a duck especially with the ponds frozen.Worked my way down a good heavy hedge and flushed a couple of hens then a good cock bird but he went the oppisite side so no shot.Moved on to another cross hedge and a fox left it followed by my old bitch giving the odd yapp, she can hardly keep up now let alone course a fox, lol.Next flushed was a cock bird which i emptyed the gun on and not as much as a feather left it.Carried on and the young bitc

Took the springers for a bit of rough shooting this morn.Went down the side of a birch-hazelwood plantation and had not traveled 50yds and the 1st woodcock of the season fell to my 2nd shot, missed completely with the 1st,anyway the old bitch Sally was on it in seconds and retrieved back to hand.Continued on down the side of the wood and the dogs flushed 3 hen pheasents out and then a nice cock bird which i missed again with 1st shot but nailed it with the 2nd.The morning was looking good with a woodcock and a cock pheasent in the bag and only had walked about 300yds.Carried on down and a fox w

Jimmy1971,not very far away from you,Westmeath, ive never met the wardens only fishery officers and that did not end good, too many laws in this country, goverment think they own everything.
-
Once seen a hare that was under pressure from the dog start to squeel and then jump right up into a whitethorn bush along a hedge, made its way through the bush and away the far side, dog could not get through lol.
-
Its highly unlikely that you will meet a game warden unless you shoot the big lakes in ireland or some reserve that you should not be in anyway.Great tool for ponds or small lakes even stubble fields,go for it,PS Dont be caught, lol.
-
True, buts what's wrong with a long bendy stick and a series of holes till the dog can get on or you reach the fox, then with careful backfilling using logs or whatever's to hand you can save the earth. I'd be gutted when i had to trench an earth out like that. jmho. Not sure if the next 1 to dig the earth would appriciate trying to dig through logs, lol anyway he did not thrench that far,4maybe 5ft at most no big deal.
-
Have seen foxs go where you would not get a f*****g ferret up let alone a terrier, sometimes we have to help the terrier a little and if it means trenching on after a fox where the dog cant get then so be it,main thing is he got a result.

How often do we hear of a dog that is infected with TB,not very often at all but how many badgers have been needlessly snared and killed in the name of TB.Its a dispute that has gone on for years and will go on for years more to see is the badger the real culprit.Deer will spread it as quick as any badger and vets moving from farm to farm will do the same.I actually know a farmer that got the DEP in to snare his land as he had gone down with TB and any badger they snared was sent away and tested,no TB in any of themand the snaring was done on every set within a mile of where his cows were past
