  1. Typical rifle lad - i saw it so i shot it, but hey i got a good photo with it, so that makes it ok yer?
  2. Do you have any reason/need to shoot it?
  3. Ever heard the saying 'ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer'? I fully accept and would encourage young lads and people starting out to ask as many questions as they like in order to learn the trade, but there is a limit, sometimes people need to learn to at least attempt to use their own brain. The concept that if you start earlier, you have more time and so can get more done is a fairly universaly recognised phenomina and is hardly part of the 'secret ferreting knowledge'. Whatever hapenned with thinking for yourself and asking advice when you get stuck? And 'Rabbit Slayer no1' - I
  4. 1/8 will make a difference but you may not notice it.
  5. Jesus wept some people need to think before they ask questions. Start earlier, get more hours of daylight, get more done. How hard is that to figure out yourself?
  6. Lovely bitch. Not a pure whip tho i think.
  7. Tbh at the moment i only use small fields with a large head of rabbits with alot of cover as the terrier usually always gets one in the bushes etc then, but with all the different types of land where i live if i had a running dog i would try and use as much of it as i was allowed lol I would seriously look at a whippet then. Adding beddy, whilst gaining some things you can lose some of the speed. Whippets probably have the fastest initial acceleration and this is very handy on small land with a lot of cover. They also have great noses. Maybe a 3/4 beddy whip? I'd say you want at least 3
  8. Sounds a nice dog that mate you got any pics? would love to see it, That thort had crossed my mind and i had thought about a larger cross but with a large dog in the house and to small one already i think another large one would be a bit of pain, and also still living at home my mum would not take to kindly to it lol Bushing is mainly what i would be doing and might take up ferreting but that would be it i imagine, what are whippets like compared to beddy/whips injury wise ive heard some bad things regarding easily damageable skin and borken bones regarding whippets but im
  9. It's something I always think about when I see posts about 1/8 this, 1/8 th that...... Does an 1/8 have an effect???? But as you've quite rightly said....... 3/4 crosses that look nothing like a collie.... For example.... I have a Collie/Grey/Saluki x Beddie (Full)Sire Pup (5 months) And she really is quite racy......... With Saluki ears and a Beddie Mask Cant see any Collie.......(But shes not thick) Cant see any Grey, but she has long legs and getting quite muscualr..... See where i'm coming from??? Its interesting, as has been said when you cross dogs
  10. Theoretically any amount of a breed that goes into the make up of a lurcher at any point in its genetic history will have an effect, it just might not be a visible one. As to the second question - we've all seen 3/4 collie greys that just look like greys, but whilst the quarter collie might not 'show' it obviously has an impact. Out of interest whats your point?
  11. Lambing! One twin out, one to come!

It's an amazing thing to watch. Lambing Dorsets and they are really good mums, even first time! Had to help deliver one so far.

      good look mate,

  12. Watch it. Plenty of the dead squirrels have been poisoned.
  13. All very well saying '1 is enough' but it depends on the kind of land and cover you work. We really need at least two to put enough pressure on some of the rabs to put them to ground and to hunt up well.
  14. Would probably work in some places. But it would be a great scam. They have your address, they know you have something worth protecting, what time the first and last person is there and they know the guard dog is going to let them in.
  15. You got to be desperate or dumb to use ferreting as a means of pest control over the summer. desperate to keep permission, i do the job i keep it. end of. Sorry mate i meant that there are far more efficient ways to control rabbits over the summer than fighting a jungle war amongst the nettles, digging big holes everywhere and sweating your ass off. Snares, drop boxes, lamps, rifles, shotguns etc.

Nothing mate i meant end of our shoot for the year!

  18. That used to be true but look at April now and April 20 years ago...... yea thats true jai, seasons are all to hell mate Standing in the snow watching squirrels bounce around and new buds on the trees, it's mental. I spend everyday in the country and the last few years have been really off, there are so many things out of order. Twas one of the really magic things about our country.
  19. That used to be true but look at April now and April 20 years ago......
  20. Just to add - hobs that have been with jills all their life dont do worse when split than a jill would. They get used to being looked after by the lady and also its like their little 'thing' being the bloke. I got some very unhappy hobs here that have had to come out as their balls are down.
  21. When it stops being worth it due to cover/babies/milky does. If needed i then move on to other methods. As the seasons start to fade away its gone all over the place, seen bucking, mating and young all year round.
  22. Beaters day tomo!

  23. Combination of factors but it is a nationwide problem apart from 1 or 2 areas where there are actually MORE rabbits than previous years. Looking at our catch records the numbers have been in decline for a few years. You really surprised? What about the countryside isn't f****d up these days?
  24. Good walk with pup - 3 rabs and 1 pheasant but lost some permission because the new tenant is a f*****g idiot!

      Bradford Lad

Know how you feel mate, i lost some very good rabbit land because the knew tennant liked watching fluffy bunnies running around the stables and paddock!!

  25. No loss mate. The dogs dead. Look at the ones running now and make your decisions.
