100% what i was saying mate. I work some really mixed land, and a lot of the time the holes could in in a rock, or in a tree stump or right in the middle of a huge bramble patch you cant get into quick to grab the rabbit, or on a verticle bank where you know the peg will pull out when the rabbit drops. In these situations i find that the very light weight (but good quality nets) tend to ball up and tangle the bunny even if the peg comes out (or is never in). For the main part though i use a mix of medium weight spun poly and medium weight nylon.

Got to be mixy really as it let the lad walk up to it talking, and then ran kind of funny, and cover wasn't that far away, and t get a dozen in a week like that with a pup? But as the lad says, great confidence for the pup and she looks to be coming on well
-
Well done Pup, she's coming on well paddy. Do they have mixy though? If not, i wish the rabbits would sit like that in the day round here!

pre ban question about dogs and deer.....
Ideation replied to welshnutter69's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I guess it depends on your sheep. I would say there is a big difference between a big heard of white sheep standing in a green field, and one black/brown, scraggly sheep that suddenly pops out of cover and goes battering off through the ferns / bracken / wood etc, acting a lot like a deer. Not that it should happen, but i would imagine the dog might be a bit more hyped up by it than if it had only ever run rabbits. -
WHile i agree with all that has been said, i am still at a loss to why it seems to work in Oz? What is the difference between the danes here and out there?
-
Aye, get her out and exoeriancing it all. Get her to mouth a few rabbits in the nets, get her used to the ferrets etc etc etc.
-
I know what you are saying mate, but in some situations they can be a real bonus. If put away properly, and you have the knack, you can set them easily enough, and what will tangle a few sticks and stuff, will definatly tangle a rabbit. I tend to use them if i have to stick a net somewhere i (or the mutt) can't get to quick to grab the rabbit, if they hit the net, they are going nowhere. On a slightly seperate point, i've noticed that the really heavy nets can often turn back a rabbit if it approaches it slowly, as they feel the weight on their face. Each to their own, and in general i

Why does everyone always suggest the heaviest nets possible. I keep a range of nets in my bag, some nylon, some hemp and mostly spun poly. Various sizes, from very small purse nets, to larger purse nets, to poke nets. I always make sure i have some very light weight, large, nylon nets in my bag, they are ideal for netting up hard to get to holes as they tend to really tangle the rabbit and it is not going anywhere. They can also be easily fixed to the side of rocks etc with a dab of bluetac etc.

so yous are all nonces as yous let them live amongst yous.jigsaw good luck my freind Look Goldy, i don't want to get into a fight on the mans thread, but i'm fairly sure that pretty much 100% of folk, if they found out a nonce was living within their community, would take some form of action to remedy that, legal or otherwise. It's a fact that the travelling community is fairly insular, and closed to outsiders. A huge amount of dog theft does seem to lead back to certain element of the travelling community, and there are other members of that community who stand by and say nowt as it is
-
Hope you get it sorted somehow jigsaw. But it looks like it's not going to stop unless someone catches them and gives them a proper hiding. It's a sad world when a man has to turn his house into fort knox just to be able to keep hold of his dogs and live in peace. And if all the fecking 'travellers' are so fed up of folk jumping on the bandwagon etc etc etc, then why don't they get their house in order. Plenty of these 'good, honest' travellers, know who the dog thieves are and do nowt as that would be 'grassing'. If you stand by and do nowt, you are as guilty as the scum, and deserve the

Very well done matey, that is one extremely impressive bag of rabbits! Up north aye?

which is the wright food for my ferrets
Ideation replied to barney rubble's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
OK apart from the cat food, it's just pure shite. Whole mixed carcass diet is best, followed by a decent complete ferret biscuit (or mix of the two). Also - they section is called "ferreting reports" because it's for "ferreting reports" . . . . . -
A good day and some cracking photos mate. Looks like really nice land to have a mooch about
-
no... then some eejet will either pass it round like hell and others will pay good money for shite or some one will breed from it and pay good money for shite 20p solves the problem maybe it does butt its still wrong in my book. i wouldnt ever do that maybe thats why your feeding a 3 legged dog and im not then Not everyone is as hardcore as you mate.
-
Looks a nice one Jamie, nice and lean and long!
-
Not weird at all mate, a shotgun takes skill, whereas if a rifle is zeroed in correctly a child can use it effectivly.
-
Farmed i think.

what do u think of my terrier
Ideation replied to lampingkid's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Not being funny, but perhaps you might want to think about skipping a few less days school to go ferreting. There is nothing wrong with being into hunting, or even being obsessed with hunting, but it's not like you have to choose between being literate and being a hunter, it's possible to be both! -
Never really done it myself, but in the future i plan to get a BOP to work over a spaniel, rather than shooting over it. Always had spaniels for years, but the shooting ended up getting boring, and it was the hunting with the dog that i really enjoyed. Spaniel and bird sounds ideal.
-
Obviously the odds are stacked in your favour if you get a dog from a long line of worker to worker, and even at times that kind of mating can produce failures. However there will always be exceptions to any rule and i'm sure there are a good handful of well worked dogs that were bred of dubious ancestors.
-
I hope so mate, although i am not so sure, as you say, time will tell.
-
Although i agree with what has been said about the fire and toughness of these little dogs, the plain fact of the matter is that they DO take their knocks worse than a heavier set / thicker skinned dog if you run them on really rough land. My lad is 18 months and has had three bad accidents that have resulted in needing vet attention, one of which almost ended his career and life. Having said that, some of the land i run him on is very hazerdous. A lot of it has to do with his very high prey drive and single minded focus when running quarry, he will literally smash into / through anything in h
-
'House clearance' . . . . is that what they call it in Sheffield. The lad was asking if you did any collecting, not if you had any previous.
-
Aye stealthy, it looks a bit rough must give it a clean! Or just paint it red I do like a sandy ferret, i put him over my best albino jill and he threw 1 sandy jill, 1 albino jill, 1 albino hob and a pair of sandy hobs that look just like him are are absolutly identical to each other, i can't tell them apart, so they have become the terrible twins! Jamie - good name that and a cracking refferance!

pai mei??? Aye mate, this weather is a f****r, it's been hard finding or pushing them to ground and the cover is still brutal! I got a few kits here to start as well, but i'll probably do it around christmas time. I've been working the jills a fair bit, and now will be running the two hobs to get them fitter and slim them down after the summer of gorging on rabbits and lounging around the court. I do like working a hob, it puts the fear of god into the rabbits.
