  1. Went out for the usual dog walk before it got dark today, and decided to go into the woods behind the house for a rake about. Took a half dozen nets and as i have been giving the jills pretty much all the work recently, decided to take Bear, the sire to the litter of kits i bred this year. It was warm as usual and the dog was pretty knackered from yesterday, but had a good scout about none the less, chased a few tree rats, put up a few pheasants and put a couple of rabbits to ground. The first was under a bloody holy tree, and the second in a nice small four hole set, again under a tre
  2. Bit worrying if you can't trust him around sheep and you live in wales.
  3. My whippet is pretty good, but if given a chance, quite likes to rag the shit out of things. They are quite like terriers in a lot of respects.
  4. Cheers guys! Tegater - No mate, it's further south, but it does look similar.
  5. Well done lads! Dogs look in fine fettle! Out of interest when you say that the ferrets caught the other 7, do you mean to dig to?
  6. Glad you like it mate! I like the one of the strange lad who seems to be doing a dance to the gods of rabbiting while standing in a bush. Three things i forgot to mention - - Meeting the local village idiot in the middle of nowhere after climbing the wall of bramble death. - Me getting stung by wasps in fecking October! - Drinking from cow troughs like a group of Ray Meers wannabes.
  7. that's nothing, I go lamping in broad daylight, it's brilliant! nice write up and pics jai! glad the whip's well again! Aye mate, i'm a big fan of the old lunch time lamping session, i find you catch the bunnys off guard. He's mostly in functioning order again, but has definatly slowed down, time will tell if it's just a lack of fitness from being layed up or if he has f****d himself a bit.
  8. Try albert64 on here. Great spun poly nets.
  9. I keep 12 (although 2 need new homes) and my ferreting partner keeps about 10, so we always have plenty of fresh ferrets ready to go. When i am out on my own i tend to take 2 / 4 depending on the type of ground being worked and if they have a full day, rotate in different ferrets for the next day. I am currently giving my one jill a weeks rest as she has probably bolted about 50 or more rabbits herself in the last few weeks and has taken a few nasty knocks.
  10. Went out today with johnnyboy and borntorun1083. Picked them up early doors, around half 6 and headed over the border. We went to a couple of pieces of btr's land. We had a selection of ferrets and the usual three dogs with us, and btr's MIssy a young half x collie grey who is shaping up to be a cracking lamp dog and also coming into her own in the day. First things first, we pull up in the car at our chosen starting point and the car that has been following us for a bit pulls in behind. Out steps an officer of the law, and starts asking about the dogs, because in the area there is a l
  11. Howard Marks is indeed one funny guy and a good time to hang out with. Phil Sparrowhawk is a name most wouldn't know, but another gem. Makes Howard look like a small fish in comparison. There are a lot of folk from that era and in those lines of buisness who are very pleasant folk to have a sit down with.
  12. Thanks matey. I am very lucky with the land i have around me, it really is beautiful, and i have permission as far as you can see in most of those photos. The only down side is that due to a mixture of location, disease, people with rifles and certain physical barriers, there is a lot less quarry than there should be by the look of it. Still, very nice land to walk, and enough to keep me busy
  13. Cheers matey. Give us a shout if you fancy any company Would be good to have a mooch and a chat while bolting a few bunnys.
  14. Aye mate, sounds like she had a ruck with something down there and got wound up badly, could be anything mate, i'm sure she will calm down next time.
  15. Cheers guys! It's good to be able to get back out now the dog is in one piece again, i hope it lasts (touch wood!). KR - The silver jill has come into her own this season, she has really come out of her shell, she is around 2 now, and is one of those jills that is super lazy, and has that wierd sleeping sickness where you can't wake them up, even with shaking and they look dead, but when she works she suddenly comes alive and really likes to bully a rabbiit. The White one, is my old faithful Ruby, shes a good age now, and maybe starting to slow down a bit, but i took a litter off her this
  16. Cheers mate, it looks good from what i have seen so far, but unfortunatly it only holds rabbits and a few fox, and too many stripeys. Would be nice to have the odd hare or deer kicking about. I'm hoping that soon enough i can get permission to lamp it as well as ferret. . . .
  17. Unfortunatly had to work for most of the day, but decided this evening to go and check out a new farm that i got recently. It's 300 acres ish, of mainly arable, with some nice fern bankings and a few strips of wood scattered about. Took the dog, some nets and a couple of jills just in case i came across anything interesting, but mainly just planned to have a walk. Got to the farm and spoke to the farmers wife, who very nicely gave me a map on which she had marked the main areas that she thought there might be some rabbits about. Started off running the dog around some ferm banks, b
  18. As my idiot dog is back in working order (well . . . mostly), i thought i would make the most of it while it lasts. Got back from work pretty late, but still had a couple of hours light, so decided to take him to a bit of woodland on a small holding that i recently got permission from. It's funny, as i have been hopping the fence into this patch of wood for a while, and after the last time i had left it, i stopped to have a look at some ponys and ended up running into the owner who gave me permission. So without having to skulk about in the trees a long the fenceline, i decided to go d
  19. Cheers everyone. Skycat - milly is one of those deceptivly fast dogs, when she takes off and is getting up to the rabbit she doesn't seem to be that fast, but always seems to be fast enough, if that makes sense? She is a fast dog that knows when to use it and when to conserve it. And her tempremant is great, a real pleasure to have about.
  20. I was working late yesterday and just as i was finishing up at 8pm i got a text from ORT asking if i was up to much, and if i fancied a quick hour out local. Had a look out the window and saw it was cloudy, windy and raining hard so drove home, got changed, grabbed some food and then headed off to meet him at our usual spot. I took Finn a long, with very little intention of doing much other than giving him a walk, as he had only just been allowed off lead the day before, after recovering from his latest collision (mad little fecker that he is) and as a result was unfit and a bit wild. But
  21. It's funny mate, i've watched one of my jills cross a field like a beagle on the scent of a rabbbit that was missed and ran off, funny little creatures. Also seen one try to climb a tree for the rabbits hung in it. Aye mate, around here you could not ferret without a dog, it would do your head in, plenty of holes, but many of them well used but empty, with the rabbits lying up above ground. You need the dog to push them under and find them to ground. Wouldnt go out without one now to be honest. When i was a kid (and not allowed to borrow the old mans dogs) i used to use a ferret to

  23. Well i agree if you are shooting standing pheasants with a shotty, but a fast, high bird, coming off the top of a hill, out of the wood, with a good wind, can be plenty challenging. Shooting them on the ground with anything is a piece of piss, you can kill them with a well aimed stick But well done anyhow, always nice to have one for the pot!
