What Deer Calibre For First Deer Rifle.
Yokel Matt replied to shropshire dan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
A .243 is more than capable for most realistic stalking scenarios for any species of deer in the uk and will double up as a fantastic fox rifle. Hell even a .222 in the right hands will do the job. Personally I think the only way you'd consistently have a chest shot deer drop is to have a caliber so heavy and fast your game dealer would tell you to go somewhere else! By passing up the 'maybe' shots and making sure of the ones you take you may still get some runners but they won't get far. As for scopes it's been mentioned somewhere else recently but instead of the S&B 8x56 a Meopta 7 -
What Deer Calibre For First Deer Rifle.
Yokel Matt replied to shropshire dan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
6.5x55 is pretty sweet to shoot and recoil isn't as bad as the others mentioned (with a moderator on). Not quite as flat shooting maybe but it's not all trajectory... -
Most mods come in certain caliber ranges where the baffles are an optimal diameter for a range of similar width bullets. The only reason I mention it is that this rfd sounds the kind of bloke who'll sell you a mod designed for a .308 / 30-06 for your .223 if that's all he's got on the shelf. Same thing happened to me a while ago.
-
Did the fish weigh over 100lb..... I've heard of a pensioner who could chuck it over his shoulder and fell-run with it, he's a top bloke, a real Robin Hood....
-
To be fair it's probably best to remove the mod before you put it back in the cabinet, clean the crown and fit a thread protector... But if I said I did that regularly I'd be lying. Edit to say what calibre is the mod? Is it .25 or .30
-
I agree. As long as the moderator is suitable for the caliber (.25 for a .223 i think) then that's all you need. If they don't have the optimum diameter mod for the calibre don't get fobbed off with the next best thing purely cos that's what he's go on the shelf... I check that as well if I were you judging by what this rfd has already tried to pull.

You know what Charlie - I agree with the sentiment of what you say and appreciate the way you put it. He's probably a great bloke with a lot of stories and, despite our age difference I'd probably get on brilliantly with him over a bottle of scotch... irrespective of the fact i'm obviously a posh southern trophy hunter...... In the situation you describe i'd probably do much the same. I would stress that I wouldn't want to be in this situation again with him but i'd be happy to have him along as a guest IF there was some reciprocation. I'd even enjoy helping him drag it to the car, load i

So because I have a sense of right and wrong I'm obviously upper class and pay for all my shooting - Yeah right. Like most places ground is hard to come buy, I pay in kind by mole catching, hedge laying, tree clearing etc as well fulling butchering an animal when they want it... So irrespective of whether it's some toe rags in a transit van or some old salt-of-the-earth king of the hills he's out of line to poach. As for a bit of venison for the freezer stop making excuses for him - that's bollocks, that would have been straight down the dealers and everyone knows it.
-
I guess I'm alone in thinking he should have been done for armed trespass, poaching and lying to police. Should have lost his license and had his guns taken for his previous at least. If you think this is unreasonable wait til your own permission starts getting raped by people like this and see how understanding you are. Sums up what a bunch of left wing pussies the justice system is made up of now.

Custom Ruger 10/22 Wanted
Yokel Matt replied to branch hopper's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Don't do it to yourself mate - you can pimp the 10/22 up all you want - the magazines will always let you down. If sense doesn't prevail check out guntrader.co.uk, plenty on there I expect. -

How To Cook A Whole Carcass?
Yokel Matt replied to Donna Wildwood's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
Renting a proper gas rotisserie designed for the job will save you endless grief. Like socks says you've you to truss and secure it proper or it either won't turn round or will bow and break up. A consistent temperature is also hard over a fire. I once had turn a hog over a wood fire using mole grips for 8 hours as the make-shift motor we used broke. It was like a Dime Bar In the end.... If anyone remembers the slogan. I've have a few mutton hungi's in NZ which were nice - not a whole sheep though. -
Personally I think now is the best time to be out calling as you'll get a good few dog fox's out ranging for vixens and testing boundaries. That said if you know your calling isn't up to scratch don't over do it as Charlie ain't stupid and you'll end alerting as opposed to enticing him. Baiting an area is the trick to begin with and if you want to call try a few meek squeaks as opposed to going full-on distressed. There's a lot to be said for subtlety sometimes.

Anybody Had Their 223 Cut Down?
Yokel Matt replied to slipper's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
My .223 was cut down from 25" to 18 and it's made a massive difference. Grouping unaffected, handling much better. For practical (realistic) hunting ranges the fps loss is nothing. I was told i may suffer from muzzle flash with the shorter barrel which could well be a problem when lamping but don't notice anything with the Norma 40gr that I use. -
If mostly for lamping i'd either go for a 8x50/56 fixed power or a variable scope WITHOUT paralax adjustment. Nothing worse than having to fiddle about with image clarity when time if of the essence. An illuminated reticule also helps a lot. Most important thing is to MAKE SURE YOU LOOK THROUGH IT FIRST. Nothig worse that buying something off t'interweb and realising you don't get on with it.

Unless you're using CCi ammo... then nothing suprises me.
-
Cheers gents - sadly a google search wasn't that simple, loads of results but the physics and technical jargon on the usage didn't make a awful lot of sense and most of the sale people i spoke to knew less about the products they were selling than i did! Found one now though.

Stripping the bolt is the easy bit - its putting the bloody thing back together. A quick job for a gunsmith who knows what he's doing... DIY is another matter.
-
Short barrelled, wooden stocked and with even a moderate (let alone spicy homeload) it doesn't take too many shots to want put it back in the cabinet. Be good for deer in thick cover... and apaches.
-
Ammo use over such a short period means jack and hopefully the FEO has the sense to know this as well. A few hours on paper can mop up most peoples maximum purchase quantity.... And how does that equal 'experience'?
-
My pimped up and outrageously expensive Volquartsen custom 10/22 used nothing but eley subs and at 40 meters they all went in the same hole. Don't get me started on the magazines though.... That's the reason I now shoot a cz bolt action.

Nasher - richard reeve at New Avon Arms of Pill on the outskirts of bristol has a lathe and does a very good job. Had my fluted .223 cut, re-crowned and threaded for £ I think. All I would say is make sure you press and hold him to firm collection date, I was too relaxed and waited a very long time. Incidentally my barrel length went from 25" to 18" and it's made a world of difference handling wise with no loss of accuracy.
-
Fantastic stag - i'm not suprised you got a wobble on looking at him through the scope.
-
The British Deer Society and BASC both heavily market this course. The details should be readily available on their websites, alternatively your FEO probably has a contact... Probably an idea tapping him up for a license variation while you're at it.
-
It's funny the sounds you find yourself making trying to either get something to stop or present a shot. Generally starts off subtle but can descend to loud, undignified... Oi! He's the perfect size for your butchery course... Bon-appetite and well done pooch.
