  1. It is a sinking feeling when the follow up is more than you expect, ironically had he followed the doe into the open it may have been harder to track in the long grass. I extend my thanks to other mobile devices as well, android included. You were right about that lamb as well Sussex, I left him 10 days in the chiller in the end and had my first taste today... Amazing.
  2. Managed to snatch an hour the other day to visit a new patch of ground, lovely still & mild evening (not like at the moment) and full of promise. My optimism as soon faded as I arrived and I saw the farmer spraying a wheat field; I jogged over and after exchanging pleasantries asked him where else he'd sprayed.... everywhere. This left few options as most of his other fields would now be more than likely occupied with cattle except one massive field which he had set aside for silage. After driving round the lanes and seeing that all the other fields were indeed full of beef I scooted over
  3. If you're bench rest shooting you can probably get away with some form of fancy signature grip which people convince themselves makes a difference. I don't give the grip a second thought, just hang onto the bloody thing and take more care and thought over the trigger pull as from my experience that's where shots go wrong.
  4. It certainly pays to keep an open mind when it comes to taking advice from people you haven't seen practicing what they preach. Not saying you can't learn a thing or two, but there's a lot of book-smart chat spoken in some places... Pubs, gunshops and gamefairs being the hotspots.
  5. Christ - if anything will make you develop a flinch it'll be that! Glad you escaped with all your fingers and eyes. Was the scope ok?
  6. From what seen the vast majority exit but the odd one may stay in depending in where you shoot it, distance of shot etc.
  7. It's all about arse covering and box ticking now. The disparity between legislation and reality is becoming more ridiculous by the minute. As for boar and bear get yourself a nice large continental caliber with obscenely expensive ammunition the size of marker pens. When in Rome...
  8. You're dead right mate. Both should be skinned ideally but my young son was having a nap in the house at the time and I was on the clock. They're both for my own deep freeze so we're all good. Another reason I had to rush was that my wife was becoming attached to it and wanted me to take it back to the farm... Thought I'd remove that option when she was out shopping.
  9. I reckon mate, not the spring lamb I had in my minds eye. It fisted off quite easily with a wet hand while still warm. Keeping the mucky wool in off the meat was a pain and made it take longer. I'm a bit more rough and ready with deer although its more of a hassle when they're changing coat as they are at the moment. End up brushing up most of it.
  10. Sounds weird but I've been wanting to do this since my early teens when I first read John & Sally Seymores guide to Self Sufficiency... Less paperwork back then no doubt but after receiving my CPH number and filling out the ARAMS forms etc I had my first sheep. Happily munching one minute, .22 in the noggin and on the trestle to drip dry the next. Might get some hand shears for the next one to trim the mucky wool around the cutting areas as keeping it off the meat was harder than I expected. Might have a crack at a haggis in the week with the offal, I'll give him a week in the chiller
  11. I've heard they're quite partial to molasses, I went stalking with a chap one time who kept a few litres in the truck which he laced a few likely areas. Only about 80p a kilo / litre I think he said and it did seem to work. Some also rate aniseed concentrate although it's not my bag at all, can't stand the stuff. I was up in Scotland a few years ago with Foxdropper and instead of a few drops poured the bottle in an area upwind from the seat. The smell was so strong I was sick over the high seat rail... And still never saw a deer. The only thing I've ever seen use the block licks are b
  12. Ouch - that's a tough one to take on the chin, it a lingering concern in the back of my mind as well. You get to appreciate why they call it surgery, gravity is just waiting for the chance to f**k you over when you're cutting off the ground.
  13. The wife wasn't quite so understanding when I was trying to get a ked out the bed last night.
  14. Edited to day this was a feral and some considerable way from any residential area.
  15. I've got an informal arrangement with a local farmer where I trap the moles and shoot the odd deer and also get to keep any fallen timber that they might want clearing. Might have bitten off more than I can chew with this lump though; despite being much bigger than ive done before its also hung up on a 7ft high stone wall. Should keep the home fires burning for a while though.
  16. The wife was supposed to be going out with some mates yesterday but her plans changed last minute at around 19:45, by 19:46 I had grabbed the gear and was out the door before she could come with any new ones! I got to the place I had in mind 5 minute later and was no sooner out the truck than back in it when it turned out a rugby match was on in the neighbouring field. Despite having had the permission for some time i'm still wary of rocking the boat with the neighbours, its not worth risking a peach on my doorstep, so I was off to plan B which I wasn't too hopeful of as a lot of bramble bashi
  17. I can't see to load it from my phone mate - I'll have a go from my PC tomorrow. Failing that I did put a post up on here so it may still be available on the search function?
  18. Fantastic pictures - there's something about those Scottish hills which makes every trip out worthwhile irrespective of whether you manage to get beast or not. Thanks for posting.
  19. @ nasty - Christ mate if that's the worst thing that's happened to you you've been truly blessed!
  20. Their reaction would depend on how educated the rabbits were in the first place. If you can stay concealed and account for all you aim at you can get decent numbers with both calibers. The .22 will always have a place in my cabinet but I reckon with an HMR and a little patience you could clear a field of rabbits irrespective of the extra noise.
  21. I've got a picture of the bugger somewhere - I'll try and dig it out. As for the proper big cats would you really want the attention?
  22. Maybe I'm not adventurous enough or maybe the fox's round here are easier but I have zero at 100 and whilst I have a fair idea out to 200 / 250 take very few shots out to that distance.
  23. These sorts of stories are always going round, I heard of a bloke that spent over an hour stalking into what he thought was a big black cat and was actually a plastic bag caught in a hedge! Personally I'm sceptical unless I see one for myself. I shot a large jet black feral cat round a pen a few years back that was the size of a fox, that was a big cat.... but not a BIG CAT.
  24. I've been meaning to register for some time but have been waiting until I get my larder sorted. Hopefully I'll have everything squared away later this year.
  25. I had a go making it once, I must have done if wrong as it turned out properly funky smelling and not in a good way. Either I buggered up the process or tapped it too late.
