You should have seen his incisors - it was him or me Agreed on the shields - a lot of the shop bought ones are simple spliced hardwood and not that good quality, a bit of skip diving should throw up a few nice bit of quality timber and basic woodworking knowhow should do the rest.

Thanks fellas - Just going to go and skin the head out now... should keep me occupied for most of the night, tough skinned buggers that they are. The cape idea is well out the window now as I've taken the head off at the atlas joint. Its probably for the best as keeping a head in a bag next to the frozen peas wouldn't have been popular with the other half!

What you cooking? I think a contained element tea urn style contraption would be pretty handy which come in different sizes / widths. I currently use a big pot and get a bollocking every time from the wife... I was on the naughty step for ages with this one: As for shields they all seem to be pretty similar, and pretty expensive imo - bushwear are as good a source as any, StalkersUK also do them and then there's always ebay?

I can well believe it, some parts of the country you can shoot them until you get bored or run out of ammo. Ill bet paunching gets tedious!

Think Hunting Revolvers Will Be Allowed Back ?
Yokel Matt replied to Aaron Proffitt's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Even getting one for dispatch converted to single shot and with a bored barrel with no rifling is hard enough. Hand gun hunting though - not my bag although I can't say I've ever tried it... Apart from with an air pistol... What a waste of time that was! -
Whatever Deker - your high opinion of yourself makes me laugh. Ill make a mental note to carefully check rabbits for lead retention and if I find any ill beg forgiveness for having ever posted such a reckless statement. You're still a dick though.

You do an excellent job of coming accross as a book smart, condecending prick in most of your posts Deker. I said i'd never found LR lead in a rabbit cavity / under the skin on the opposite side, with the numbers i've shot my assumption would be because the lead had all passed through. I then clarity my 'Daft ill considered post' knowing you'd probably be rubbing your hands with glee and here we are. Show me the lead then.

What animal are you talking about, Winchester and Magtech have a BIG HP and commonly deliver a lot of energy and stay in. Rabbits mate - I know they have a large HP which may dump into them harder but I stand by my reconing that the rounds pass through more often than not although I can't say I've spent time fishing around the cavaties looking for lead. That is seriously NOT what you said, I wouldn't have bothered if that was your original comment I can't think of a single occasion where a .22 LR slug stayed in the cavity even with long range shots. Piss off Mr semi-pro

I'd be more suprised if they didn't go straight through - I can't think of a single occasion where a .22 LR slug stayed in the cavity even with long range shots. Don't get me started on CCI snap, crackle & pops...

Popped over to Wiltshire on Saturday afternoon to meet up with Foxdropper and zero a new batch of ammo for the 6.5 in preparation for a crack at the reds in the next few weeks. I'd given the sauer a right good scrubbing and was expecting it to need some re-doping but my last three rounds of my old batch clover leaved a half inch above the bull at 50 meters. Taking it back to 100m I put 3 of the new stuff in the mag, 120 gr Noslet BT - all our local place has on the shelf with nothing on the horizon for the next god knows how long. First shot and the rifle kicked like a mule and needed some

I like it - my personal favourite is 'two spindly antlers had put him in the frame for a bad morning'... very good and a nice result.

Very happy for the man and fair play to you for giving him the opportunity - Getting a good clean shot is great for his confidence and by seeing the beast run a short distance before dropping is valuable education - he'll never forget his first buck, and now he'll never forget to follow up a shot he new to be good. ps - I hope you made him drag his first buck as well - that'll learn him at that weight!

Cocking dog broken? If it is the same happened to mine, a decent gunsmith should be able to knock one up and you don't have to worry about matching the wood up... if aesthetics matter to you that is.

how about this: http://www4.gvsu.edu/triert/s/articles/jerky1.htm Total decadence using loin but damn good! I prefer a bit more spice and a bit less time in the oven to get more of a biltong thing going on but the process is essentially the same.

Anyone Do Home Kill And Butchery?
Yokel Matt replied to man o kent's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
Not that I have any experience of sheep etc but i've done a fair few deer and if you don't have a chiller butchering in the absence of a cold spell can be a real ball ache. Not only does it make everything more time critical but cutting meat that is still wet is messier as harder to do properly as it doesn't stand up to knife work.. Not to mention the bloody flies managing to find their way into anything. Whats the going rate on a hogget? I've been meaning find someone I can buy a beast from with the intention of doing a home kill for personal consumption. -
Advice Please What Shottie.
Yokel Matt replied to kernow shooter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Look here - asking a bunch of people on a forum what your first shot gun should be is going to get you nothing but a hundred different answers, all of which will probably be wrong for you as it's a very personal thing. First decide what you want it for. Then get your ass down the local gunsmith and as him if you can handle a few, milk him for information about barrel lengths, chokes, u/u, s/s, fitting, exhibition grade walnut or whatever and try and see through the sales latter pointing to the gun that's been gathering dust on the rack. Once you have a vague idea of what you're after -
I wonder if they will still be smiling when their face is unceremoniously pressed into the Tarmac by an armed response copper having just being tazered... as well they should. Getting dressed up like Mossad and running round with a toy gun may make them feel tough but is pretty sad really... Fools.

Clearing Canadian Geese
Yokel Matt replied to ferretsandhawks's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I'd agree with Deker that an air rifle is not a great idea on geese - even FAC rated. I imagine the person who has asked you doesn't know too much about what can and can't drop them and asked you as you do the rabbit control. The last thing you want is for an injured goose with claret pouring out of it cartwheeling all over 3rd leg in front of dog walkers & council busy-bodies picking up dog shit or lurking in hedgerows. Something quick and splatty like the HMR would be the weapon of choice imo. -
Shortage Of Ammo In The Country !
Yokel Matt replied to shovel leaner's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Surely thats good news isn't it - Maybe I had a rough batch but I found CCI subs the most inconsistant, crappy .22 Longs I've ever used. A change to winchester super-x or eley is a step in the right direction and if a gun shop ran out of them you know things are bad! -
30% off a new scope is a result - many places wouln't have been so generous.

Big Mistake But A One Off On The Grass.
Yokel Matt replied to Squirrel_Basher's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Not my finest hour but one of those things - still, a nice bit of tender venison for the freezer. That doe was something you don't see every day, maybe a broken foreleg had something to do with it? As for tender thats one word you won't be able to use for her! -
Got to say mate you really do a cracking job of cleaning heads out, make mine look shabby... which reminds me, I got a 8 pointer a while ago when I used to actually have time to go deer stalking, instead on changing nappies and catering to the whims of small children.... poor me.

They are a good stopping round for fox's, anywhere front and centre and it not going anywhere. Even if you do glance strike a rib its going to go off like a grenade inside it and no exit would be a good thing. A splash wound which doesn't penetrate the vitals would make me think twice if using an HMR but lets not go down that road again.
-
And then some mate. I've found these very suitable for fox out to 300 meters.
