As long as you have good reason there should be no problems although, in the absence of experience the plod will probably state a mentor or dsc is required for expanding ammo and deer variation. Target shooting variation should be a formality. I'm shocked they actually do a pre-DSC1 course - very ingenuitive way to squeeze every last quid out of you. The DSC isn't rocket science mate, you'll probably be fine just getting the pack and going straight to the main event.

As above be cautious buying this caliber second hand. 22-250 is a barrel burner and remember the guy 'checking the barrel' for you is the same guy who has it gathering dust on his gun rack. Remington 700 are in general pretty agricultural but largely reliable & accurate rifle. They are the landrover of the gun world with plenty of ways to customise them. I don't like the fact that the safety catch doesn't lock down the bolt and floor plate magazines are standard. I've had a varmint and vssf, both cut down, both in different stocks and both with different triggers and detachable magazi

Not necessarily - AOLQ or a specific variation for the quarry species together with landowner permission and the ground either being cleared for that caliber or unrestricted is needed together with appropriate expanding ammunition. Re: selling venison, DSC 1 comes with a game hygiene certificate and 'Hunter ID' reference where you are assumed to have the ware-with-all to certify the game was healthy and free from notifiable diseases. You don't have to do a DSC to get this as separate courses exist. I think if you're not certified to inspect game the pluck has to accompany the carcus? D

Thanks for taking them all mate!

My 6.5 came Apel mounts but I needed to replace most of the ring screws as the previous owner used the wrong sized tool on them.... £8 EACH... £64 just for the for screws! Whilst there are far more economical options available mounts are still a very underestimated part of the set up - no point spending a wad on the scope if the mounts are crap.

I've not forgotten mate - the politics of this permission makes Westminster look like a sweet shop. Work in progress....

Thanks gents - as nice a stag as he is I'd rather he'd fallen to Tim. It's embarrassing when Lady Luck smiles on the host not the guest!

The phone rang, it was the landowner of my patch in Dorset saying the freezer was empty and there were a lot of deer about. This statement was followed by a pregnant pause which I was quick to fill with a date in the diary! Having neglected this place for a few months and still conscious of my promise to Foxdropper to put him on a stag we found ourselves before dawn at the venue last weekend. We were early and hungry as the MacDonalds we normally stopped at was closed for a refurb - The injustice of it all! As our stomachs protested we went over the game plan and as first light came kitted up

There's nothing more infuriating than having the best equipment and no one to blame but yourself... Spoken from experience I can assure you!

The Worst Trap,..... Ever !!
Yokel Matt replied to heritage's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Rodent Glue Traps. If someone can explain how these things were ever passed on welfare grounds i'd love to know. http://www.gluetraps.co.uk/mouse-glue-trap-boards-1-c.asp -
Oops - My mistake. No one likes to miss or middle things but zeroing before each session seems a bit unnecessary / impractical to me unless you've got reason to doubt the zero.

Ive just had the barrel on my remi 700 vssf cut down to 18" to make it more manageable in the field (from 25" odd). This took it well into the fluting but was possible and after a bit of extra turning on the lathe it doesn't look too shabby either. If it's a caliber you plan to stick with it's more important it's functional and right for you - there are plenty of people with good looking guns that can't shoot for shit because they're too focused on what they look like to how they fit / feel. Edited to say mine was cut and threaded specifically with a moderator in mind.

Must take a bit of guess work on the closer rabbits if you're zeroed at 100. That's if there are any closer ones of course. As for zeroing at the start of a season, I love to know what season coypu is talking about given that coney is shootable all year round - you realised it was off and took steps to fix it... What's the problem?

128gr? - is that a factory round or home load? I'm using 120 gr factory Norma, very good but hellish expensive so competent equivalents are open to consideration! Needless to say these do the trick.

Depends if it's a stringy old buck or or not. For the most part soaking isn't really necessary and if it is it's probably better off as dog/ferret food anyway. Any slow cooked recipe will do but try to either add some fat ie bacon lardons and maybe something sweet like apricots. Rabbit casseroled in cider, apricots and cream is fool proof. BBQ wise do yourself a cavor and stick to the tender ones - basically if it balls, smells funky and is it's a f****r to skin.... Dont BBQ it! As for silver skin, ignore it, if it's skinned properly in the first place there's not much more you can do.

Anyone on here with any experience with water wells? I've got one in my garden that was filled in with hardcore and rubble back in the 50's and Im in the process of clearing it out. Its pretty bloody terrifying as 3 skips and 15 tons later i'm currently down to 37ft where we met the water table - I can't see there being much more that 5-10ft left to go (at least I hope there isn't) but i'm going to need a pump to help me get there. Renting these is isn't cheep so i'd prefer to just buy one which I can set up down there once we reach the bottom. I can't get my head around the technical

Gun Protection When Out In Rain????
Yokel Matt replied to GEOFF.223's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
It's the chamber you've got to watch out for. Once that starts getting pitted you're trouble. Forget tape, the colour only fades and makes the whole thing look rubbish. Getting the rifle dipped is a possible option though, lots of options and quite a durable finish I believe. -
Gun Protection When Out In Rain????
Yokel Matt replied to GEOFF.223's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Just make sure you dry and clean it when you get back and don't put it back in the cabinet cold or wet. If its has a soaking and moisture has crept down the bolt, around the action and under the bedding I give it a blast with a Napier spray before putting it back in the slip and then let it dry with the bolt out when I get back. Oil/wax sounds like a lot of mess and hassle personally and still won't avoid the problem. -
Bigger isn't necessarily better, I mean who wants to carry 2 to 3 roe, plus rifle and other kit for crying out loud! I've got the harkila and have had two mature bucks in it and it nearly did me in. It's made quite well but the material is very loud when it brushes against things, something I'd have thought harkila would have thought of. Lining is good and strong and the pack has compression straps on it to narrow the profile so its not so wide on you back when nothing's in it. For all the good ideas on it if I have to get another I'd go for a well made Loden sack.

Tasty for sure but christ can they can make a noise - Light Sussex lay well and can reach a reasonable weight. Having helped pluck & pull 120 turkeys last week i can't say i'm overcome with joy at the thought of one of them tomorrow either. Did some Ross's last week as well, some of which had green ankles which I guess you would do if you got to 11 / 12lb that quick. A lot of maize grown round here - I go round the fields with hessian potato sacks on a dry day and bag up left over cobs for the fattening ration, often a good flat patch at the gateway where the farmer / contractor ha
