  1. Now that's more like it - nice to see the fruits of ones labours being put to good use... And that looks tasty.
  2. It is a shame mate - to some they're nothing more than vermin. God knows had I intentionally tried to stalk him it would never have worked out the way it did, bucks that size don't get there by being foolish or curious. Judging by his teeth he'd been around the block and with just 5 points and small tines was probably on his way back as well, still a shame though.
  3. I get to keep it at this place mate. At other places I give the landowners a joint every now and then, one place I have gets the full works - trussed oven ready joints, dice, mince, sausages, burgers... I don't pay for any stalking so always offer to stay one the right side of the owner... it's just some have higher expectations than others!
  4. I think so - from the sound of things I can keep whatever they com in until I've got my own hardware. I just need to know what I need to get! Its a friend of a friends dad, neither of the middle men know and/or give a shit about bees so the information hasn't all filtered through. Thanks David - from what I can tell the bee scene is getting more commercial in terms of courses but hopefully I'll be able to find some locally to show me the ropes, failing that books, common sense.... and Youtube.
  5. Raced home from work on Wednesday keen to go and check out a new piece of ground to try and score an opening day buck. Id been round the boundary with the land owner a couple of times, once on the lamp, it was obvious he was plainly keen to see the numbers come down saying he'd be happy for them to stay in single figures. As we'd seen around 15 deer while out rabbiting I agreed that bringing it under 10 should reasonably straightforward and he said no - single figures a in 1 or 2! Trying to align landowners expectations with your own ethics / ideas isn't always easy and, as I've got no intenti
  6. I've been wanting to get into beekeeping for years but so far have only got so far as to be given the Idiots Guide to beekeeping. I was planning on cracking on with it this year but have been focussing on my game larder / cutting room instead and have let my reading up slide. Thing is I've just been offered a neucleus hive for nothing as the guy has 8 hives and wants to cut one to lighten his workload; my deadline for collecting it is 2/3 weeks or he'll 'let them go'. I can probably stump up for a hive and find somewhere to site it but as to keeping them I don't have a clue. Is it possible
  7. Last January I saw a border terrier attached to a roe's throat during a pheasant drive. He was chuffed to bits with himself. From a layman's perspective I'd have thought any dog with a half decent nose and in some semblance of control would be handy to have about in the absence of a dedicated deer dog?
  8. The abbreviated version is that someone tried to head shoot a roe at 150m, thought it dropped but then couldn't find any sign of it and put it down as a miss. Some people, myself included suggested that head shooting deer wasn't a good idea and should be passed up in favour of neck / chest shots. Some views were expressed stronger than others and there was a bit of name calling and hair pulling but nothing too nasty. So what are the pros and cons of head shooting deer then? Who does it, why and how far is too far? Also, to keep it fair... who used to take head shots, had it go terribly wr
  9. Not sure what criteria others follow but for yearlings, prickets and 4 pointers I judge them on body weight, frame stature and overall vigour / demeanour when deciding culls. When they push onto a mature buck you've got more to go on and it should be far more obvious what's got potential. Despite this I no doubt shoot many bucks well before their prime as giving them the time to mature isn't always practical.
  10. Whatever there is go prepared... You do to have planned for Roe and have to improvise for Red!!
  11. The truth is a second hand CZ fully set up with scope and moderator could be had for probably a shade over £500 and will probably shoot just as well as a pimped up uber expensive rifle. Ok you might not shoot clover leaves but for most realistic fox's at under 200m you don't need to. I shoot a remi 700 vssf cut down to 18" with a 10 AI mag conversion, ACE Ultra moderator and Zeiss 6-24x56 FLT.
  12. I must admit the vast majority of mine get done on the floor as a suitable tree or 5 bar gate is more often than not a too far away and in the opposite direction to the truck! Nicely done though... what's just another day in Sussex is still more than welcome, I can't see me getting bored of reading about your trips out.
  13. A mate had a T8 with a couple of holes in it, gave you flash blindness at night when foxing! I happen to have a pre-loved Predator 8 for sale in .25cal, 1/2UNF. If you're interested drop me a PM.
  14. Well I take my hat off to you just for making such a tidy job of skinning it in the first place - they're a right b*****d. What you've managed to do with it is phenomenal.
  15. My first question is how windy was it as you probably know even light wind can play havoc with the HMR. Change of ammo - most of it is made in the same place but still I wouldn't rule it out. Re the bipod removal - i reckon the chance of balance certainly can and does effect the zero and for proper testing the only way to confidently get some groups is to shoot prone of the bipod. The next still day try it prone with the bipod on and work back to 200 after a re-zero from 50m and hopefully you'll be all good.
  16. If the probe tells me it's too deep for a knife and trowel I just go further along the line until I find somewhere where it's shallower... Probably takes longer to get the b*****d though.
  17. Sound advice - I extended my stock recently and I'm just as bad as before. A relief to know its not all about length...
  18. You could try a slip on extension and have a day on the clays before shelling out. Just make sure you remove it before putting back ing the cabinet or the wood may discolour.
  19. The wind will give you away before anything - keep the weather gauge on where you expect him to show and any old drab clothing will do. Plus you won't look quite so ridiculous... And style is everything.
  20. On the basis that I assume you'll be shooting more deer & fox's than bear and buffalo that's sense talking... Although a Royal holland & holland double rifle in .400 nitro could come in handy for sika stags in thick woodland.....
  21. At least you've had a look through them and made an informed decision. The number of disappointed shooters with mail order scopes must be significant... I know of at least one.... Me.
  22. The lighter the cartridge the shorter the range. I've shot plenty with a pigeon load of no'6. If you're specifically after fox use BB or something similar and keep it under 40yrd.
