I'd have thought life as a working ferret would be a short lived game with all the little nasties you have over there isn't it? Do you lose any to snake bites etc, I lost one to what I assume was an adder encounter once here in the uk and that is considered a rareity.

Don't be a prat! The oak saplings/ acorns came from England (as did the foxs) when we colonised the place. Technically they are English foxs and I wouldn't have thought for a minute they are happy about having them over there. Have a little think before try and tell the guy where he lives. Nice vixen to be sure, love the short legged jrt.

They are a great bit of kit - I picked one up the other day 2nd hand and its like a lazer to shoot and very quiet. I really like the lever style cocking action and the basic magazine.

How To Deal With Roe Fawns In Meadows?
Yokel Matt replied to trenchfoot's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
I've asked some farmers several years running about walking the fields just before silaging and always been told 'yep - we'll be doing it on 'Wednesday this week'... I'll turn up Wednesday to find it cut! Same with hedge cutting when i'm planning to stalk does... best intentions and planning don't always mix with a farmers intinery! Moving them to the nearest side / hedgerow is probably the best but whos to know? less certain than getting chopped up. -
My pleasure mate - one of those evenings where everything somehow happened to work out for the best. Any other time a persistent doe barking and stamping 5 meters from you would probably have had a different result! A very nice shot as well, he wasn't hanging about and it was plain to see his intention was to make the hedgerow, fortunately showing a broadside and at 160 meters it was a great result. Chancing a neck shot at that range as he couched would have tempted a more inpatient & inexperienced stalker and I take my hat off to you for waiting it out and running the risk of the light fa

I've seen three several times but never four... maybe I don't get out enough. I'd also say moving kids, let alone taking them away with some fanciful intention at rearing them is probably a death sentence for them. They stand a better chance being left where they are... unless they are in the path of the mower silaging in which case moving them to the side is justified.

That's quality mate - very well done. He did well there and must be made up to get two firsts in one day. Catch up later mate.

I picked up a new bit of ground about 8 months ago, just rabbits at first. I knew there were deer on there but there was, quite understandably trust to be earned from the landowner before things progressed any further. I've worked pretty hard clearing felled trees and was actually offered the 'upgrade' when I delivered some venison sausages i'd made with a bottle of plonk. He said there was another stalker on the ground but that we were both welcome. I met the other stalker in the third week of March when I was out trapping moles on the ground. I wondered over to introduce myself as he was

Cheers fellas - I was keen to make a good impression and now need to get busy turning these lads into sausages, steaks & casserole chunks. Saturday is going to busy!

Having recently scored a new bit of ground in Dorset I went to give it a once over on Monday having negotiated a couple of days off work. I arrived just after 10am to meet with the shepherd, calrify the boundries and catch up with the landowners who turned out to be very keen on a filling the freezer with venison. While we were talking three sika could be seen milling around in a small copse less than 100 meters away. Visability was patchy through the scrub and I had to restrain myself from being rude and grabbing my bins out the car to see if there was a stag or pricket with them. Once we

Rimfire to centerfire is a step up responsibility wise whatever the legal stuff says. I wouldn't be suprised if they added some conditions of use on the .223.

Rifle For Fox And Roe Recommendations Please ???
Yokel Matt replied to dax17's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
For practicality & economy you won't go wrong with a .243. You're also more likely to find a decent selection of factory ammunition for it - 100 grain soft nosed is fine for everything in this country. -
A Guess To As The Score Of This Buck?
Yokel Matt replied to J Darcy's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Great front tines but I think it'll be a close run thing. I'll be bullish and say 116.3 -
Really Darcy! Fancy not having your camera when he stepped out! Bet that keeps you awake at night. What a beauty - would love to see some more or him while he still standing if you get any more.

That it was mate - worth waiting for.

This particular patch has a pretty narrow window of certainty for roe bucks and thats before the pasture gets silaged and the cows are let out - after that its game over and you can only hope to stumble across one. At only 100 odd acres of fields and hedges surrounded by much better, varied ground its not exactly a magnet but serves as a vaccume for yearlings when they're booted out and the occasional decent buck which follows the does in spring to fawn in the long grass. Sadly most of these get chopped up in the mower despite my best efforts but thats another story. Whilst I've been lucky

At least he saw some rabbits - if he was that lucky down here with the deer there wouldn't be any coney to keep him entertained as VHD has buggered the lot of them. Fancy getting the best seat in the house and drawing a blank - lucky he is a good mate or he probably wouldn't believe you! As for the give & take fair play. Ground is hard to come by down this neck of the woods so a little elbow grease and good will helps keep relations sweet for something which could easily be taken for granted so that when the recreational stalker comes knocking with his cheque book the landowner doesn't

Hit & Miss With The Moles
Yokel Matt replied to Yokel Matt's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Still feeling my way through things really - read a couple of books which seem to padded out with 95% shite so any / all comments welcome. In terms of excluding light i'm pretty sure i'm doing that - definatley guilty of making the holes too big then trying to pack them out - blagging it width ways but length-way seem to be where things are going wrong. One of the moles was caught arse end in so maybe if I tune the trigger a bit this might not give them the chance next time..... -
Hit & Miss With The Moles
Yokel Matt replied to Yokel Matt's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Thank you - makes sense really. The trouble seem to be coming from the very shallow runs just under the turf where its difficult to pack a clod in without damaging the run. mental note to cut it tighter -
Fair play mate - pack it all in while you can then. Plently of other things to do during the down time no doubt. Bet a muntie makes a nice change to dragging a fallow - those Y shaped game carriers make a handy sling for them up to the hoc if you've got a treck.

Never trapped a mole in my life until recently but now finding it strangely addictive... almost therapeutic. This being said getting used to the probe and trying to avoid split or curving tunnels has generated some colourful language. Anyway - having some success with half-barrels but I seem to be missing a few that appear to get to the trap and poke up infront it judging from the hole. The traps arn't backfilled so i assume it me not taking enough care to lay it but despite best efforts it still seems to be happening. I realise the art of mole catching is cloaked in secrecy but any he

You certainly get out Sussex - do you get many roe down there or is it mainly fallow?
