  1. Is it a permanent fixture or one that could be moved? If the former I'd spend a bit of time in spots at the times you'll want to be stalking and make sure you're in the most likely spot. That boggy area with the high foliage will be a different place in the winter and may be a nice rutting stand. The open area with the good grass will be where they feed and the bracken a good couching spot so I appreciate your quandary. If in doubt look for the slots and go for the area overlooking the heaviest foot fall.
  2. Cheers gents. I've been quite fortunate this season as I've been out half the number of times but had twice the success, more through luck than judgement no doubt. I've only been hard on them on a new piece of ground out of necessity but as soon as the numbers are down I should get away with being a bit more selective. Other than that good numbers about.
  3. Is this the field you posted about recently where there are decent numbers of rabbits (at the moment) and you wanted advise on how many to shoot so you can look like you're doing a good job but can still keep some numbers to preserve your sport? I hope it's not mixi for your sake or you might have to start knocking on a few more doors.
  4. Had a bit of luck on the bucks over the last few weeks starting with a chance encounter whilst checking my bees earlier in June. A young buck with a poor head that had evidently missed the cull in April or moved onto the ground more recently was seen earlier in the day in a field that was due to be cut so I decided to have a look out that evening. In the 5 hours since leaving the farm and going back the farmer had cut the majority of the field but as I was cursing him for his timing I spotted the cull buck (in the company of a doe) in the neighbouring field made up of wheat and a thick belt of
  5. If the owners want it cleared and you dick about with a few here and there you risk either losing it or sharing it with someone else. They could catch a dose of mixi or VHD next week for all you and then you'd be kicking yourself. Personally I go smack the shit out of them; let the owners see your ruthless efficiency and ask them to tell their mates about you. Don't pin your hopes and sport on one permission, never stop looking.
  6. I've got a Sauer 202 in 6.5x55 and can't fault it for accuracy, stopping power and minimal meat damage. Negligible recoil, especially with a moderator so you can stay sited after the shot and if you home load you'll be in clover with it, factory ammo can be a bitch to find depending on how good (or useless) your local shop is but aside from that id have nothing else. Roe, muntjack, mountain goats, boar, sika, fallow and a Red at over 400m have all had a taste and not seeded seconds.
  7. Sounds like long netting / snaring is the safest option here.
  8. When I was in New Zealand I had a job painting houses and on one job the owner said ' for f**k sake make sure you shut the back gate or the dog (beagle) would get in the neighbours bins'. Sure enough I forgot and the beagle ended up wolfing down a load of fish guts and heads from a few doors down... To make things worse they weren't exactly fresh as the whole street stank with them. Apparently they came back up in the lounge... Not cool.
  9. I went check the bees at the weekend and my 4 year old daughter asked if she could come along... she wanted to see the Queen Bee. I explained that she could but that she'd have to be a really good girl and that if she promised to do as she was told she could be my smoker assistant. Bless her she was great, I got her togged up in a winter play suit (which must have been sweltering) a spare veil and some kiddies gardening gloves - she was so excited. I tested her around them by standing at the entrance and she didn't flinch when they buzzed around her to get in. She was so good I was abl
  10. I bought a game license once when I went to Scotland grouse shooting, not that it turns out I needed to. I think I tried three post offices before I found one where someone knew what the hell I was talking about! While you'd expect to hear a bit of shite in a pub some of the best bullshit I've heard has been in gunshops which is even more worrying.
  11. Some older buck rabbits can be a bit pungent. I tend to soak most rabbits in bowl of water for a couple of hours before cooking. Personally I'd find making rabbit sausages more hassle than it's worth, I rather feed them to the dogs.
  12. The more complicated it is the cleaner you have to keep it. Grass seeds, dust, mud & blood don't make that easy.
  13. It's a small patch granted but it may well turn out to be a nugget of opportunity. Crack on, be honest & upfront and build up from there.
  14. This'll be like that Simpsons episode where they're trying to find the secret ingredient to a Flaming Moe - it's probably just 'worm juice' from wormery, bottled and with a mole on the front.
  15. Seriously mate - they love it: http://www.theshedmag.co.nz/online/component/virtuemart/?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage-ask.tpl&product_id=103&category_id=7
  16. I left that part out on purpose! My first home kill was superseded by my first livestock escapee - 3x 8 acre fields is a lot to chase a spirited sheep around, especially when you're wearing wellies! At one point I thought I'd have to get the deer rifle and gun it down in front of all the neighbours but fortunately it didn't come to that and we caught it. As for sheering the belly / other skinning areas I'll certainly do this before I start next time!
  17. I've got a 14x12 national which I transferred my Nuke to in May. The nuke frames are standard national and I was told at the time that these would probably be drawn down into drone comb and that I should gradually replace them. The thing is that while the 14x12 frames are slowly getting drawn out the comb at the bottom of the standard frames is getting heavily drawn and it seems a lot of the bees efforts are being diverted away from where I want it. Should I remove this extra comb and hope they get the message or just leave them to it and gradually move these to the sides and eventually re
  18. +1 paulus- it's all about 'reason why', a variation for a duplicate caliber just to hold it won't wash... That's what rfd's are for. Either say one is going to be a dedicated night vision rifle or target rifle with the other daylight / conventional vermin control.
  19. Great looking rifles the stutzen but just remember that wet wood can warp and fitting a moderator to one could be a right b*****d. There was a thread in here years back of some lad who had a reflex style one fitted, the gunsmith that agreed to do it should have been cheek branded!
  20. For some reason a lot of dedicated fox rifles seem to be on the heavy side - mine included. In hindsight I think it's far more practical to have a light weight rifle with a modest weighted moderator than to have a bull barrelled lump. I've got a remi 700 vssf, the barrel has been cut from 25" to 18 and it still weighs a ton! Whilst it's very accurate I wouldn't say this is down to the weight. Go to a few shops with plenty on the shelves, handle a few and make your decision from there. One thing I would recommend for a foxing rifle is a detachable box mag as opposed to a floor plate.
  21. Got a couple of young cull bucks last Sunday and thought id have a crack at making a haggis from the pluck. The method seemed pretty simple, the difficulty trying to get the texture right and the right balance from what was an offally lot of offal I haven't tried them yet as warm, still summer evenings aren't exactly what i'd call 'haggis' weather and to be honest after all the time prepping them im sick of the sight of the buggers. Apparently they freeze well so here is my first attempt. Trim and prepare the pluck (check the lobes of the lungs and trim off if necessary, remove the he
  22. If you can find a back issue on the web somewhere I found a great 'how to' guide in Shed Magazine (New Zealand).
  23. A bit bloody stressful if I'm honest mate - got them all set up at vast expense in a new 14x12 national hive only to realise in transfer that I had no brood at all and no bloody queen!... Just a box of bees! Have since begged two frames of brood from a local beekeeper and will be checking them tomorrow to see if they've managed to make a queen. Fingers crossed!
  24. No mate - just aim where you would normally, even if it's right under the seat. Second guessing poi will lead to mistakes - if unsure give yourself some tolerance and go for the boiler room where an inch or two will still get it in the game diary.
