  1. Scot, what about something in line with the Germans (dunno if it still exists but used to), where you get a choice between military service of health/social care? For me national service would simply be two years spent in service of your country in any sector you were needed/wanted to work in, ie defence, education, health/social or even diplomatic.
  2. In the US nearly half of their serving soldiers are overweight and nearly one in five are obese! In the UK it's a growing problem, fitness tests being failed over hundreds of times per year in certain regiments. Soldiers being discharged with obesity. LOL. Don't worry about potential conscripts, the f***ing regulars have a bad enough problem!
  3. I don't think it'd fix the problem but I also don't necessarily see it as a bad idea. How much would it cost the country though? And for what return? Would it really promote national pride and resposibility or just deeper resentment from the youth? f**k knows.
  4. What's your experience of CWD in Linc's JD? Seems ideal for them and next door to their home counties but where I am at least there's nada!
  5. Little known hero, another incredible man... http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/dominicselwood/100274893/the-spy-who-saved-d-day/
  6. You just can't imagine an operation of that magnitude taking place in today’s world. Reading about it, Sword beach alone had a greater British death toll (683) than the entire Afghan conflict (448). And that beach fell with little resistance apparently!
  7. Whoever edited that article is f***ing retarded! Those 'red berets' are bloody maroon! And that 'Grippen' with the Spitfire is a Typhoon! Cracking pictures though. They should have called the Typhoon the Spitfire in homage to the WWII fighter.
  8. Raised in an orphanage, first bit of action he saw was dropping into Normandy on D-Day with the Paras, then post war served with the Special Air Service. Baptism of fire eh.
  9. I was thinking the same mate, but couldn't quite bring myself to type it.
  10. Tried to add this to GTEs thread but can't find it. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/history/world-war-two/10876199/D-Day-veteran-89-parachutes-into-Normandy-again.html#source=refresh What a boy! 90 this year and still jumping! Just look at that picture of him, maroon beret, aviators and medals spanning half his chest! Even at 89 he still has an intimidating look about him....
  11. That's ridiculous! How the hell are you supposed to safely pull out if you are behind another parked car? BANG straight into an unseen on-coming vehicle! . Check your highway code I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying the law is dumb.

  13. Not that they're trying to alarm anyone with their "DEADLY lightning" and "hailstones the size of cricket balls".... LOL Here's my forecast, it's going to rain and get a bit windy. Stay in a watch The Day After Tomorrow.
  14. This time of year is their anything better than a good Ploughmans in a bear garden? Cheeses, pork pie, crusty bread, pickle, apple, cold meat..... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
  15. You're only 25 miles from Melton. Try Melton Market. I'm pretty sure you can buy larder prepped carcasses from their. Though I haven't been in years. If you're willing to pay the market price then just go straight to the market place, simplest way about it I would say.
  16. I can't really think what my favourite meal is but now and again I have a craving for a proper pub/restaurant quality beef burger. I had one at a place called Titchewell Manor a few weeks back in Norfolk which tasted amazing. If I was cooking for someone I'd probably want to do a medium rare roe/muntjac loin with roast veg and a red wine sauce, but that'd depend on their taste. Without doubt though the best way to cook has to be outside on a charcoal BBQ, whatever it is you're cooking.
  17. Good luck. A colleague trained as a mechanic then one day decided to be a theoretical physicist..... as you do...... he went to uni (full time) and did his PhD. Plenty have done similar but I can't add anything constructive mind.
  18. It's always worth having a terrier about just for their character.
  19. It's nice to see families that regularly mix with their extended family and are close with their immediate family. We're not all like that but it's a good thing imo.
  20. Smart pup. What work do you have in mind for it? Bird/game, deer/boar, fox/vermin?
