    See to me this is an example of where we could really do better environmentally. We have this renewable resource that is essentially worthless and has been replaced by a much less environmentally friendly alternative (polyester). Depending on your politics we could either incentivise wool products with the tax system or make a bigger push socially.

    Any clues? Doesn’t look like a naturally shaped rock of the boring variety. Shaped like a bullet, looks to be a broken tip, with a hole in the middle. Got radial striations around the hole too. Also it’s made of stone.

    Well, whether those people have corrupt intentions or not, if the population has a demographic shift towards the old then that will result in serious pressure on the Budget. And that will have serious implication on society if the money isn't found. Historically the solution to these problems has been terribly short sighted. When you have a finite amount of land, increasing the population to drive economic growth in a game that has no end is f***ing mental!     In the event we don't naturally control population then such authoritarian measures would be forced on us. And after those measures have had the desired effect of bringing stability we will look around us at what is left of the planet and conclude we left the inevitable too late.... This saves us that level of loss and pain.

    I mean, I don't agree that 'we just won't be able to stop them'. But at least now we know of a mechanism for preventing that event. You don't have to explain to me the consequences of millions of Africa's finest being admitted to our islands.... what you've just laid out there happens whether social progress controls population growth or not though. The difference is we have the ability to impact that through this mechanism. Worse case it doesn't work and we're no worse off.

    Quite simply, infinite growth is impossible in the real world. This planet is finite in size yet we as a species carry on like it doesn't have an edge. We're f***ing the place and we seem to be incapable of taking direct action to stop that. If our growth isn't curbed in some way we will have nothing but 'civilisation' left to enjoy and one day the resources will run dry and then we will be forced to control our population. That way we do it with f**k all left to enjoy. This way it happens while there exists some wonder left.

    I read it all. It's brilliant news that social progress naturally caps population growth. A race to top is really a race to the bottom. We'll destroy to place with that attitude. India is projected to drop by 20%.... Africa has a LONG way to gain in terms of social progress, it can literally only get better. There's considerable hope there. My biggest concern is that economists will shit themselves and force migration on us to keep growth buoyant. We need to resist that like our lives depend on it.     A few years ago I was invited on a boundary day so long as I brought my little mongrel terrier as they were short on dogs. I was nattering with the keeper while walking to a drive when a lemon cocker exploded out of a hedge and my bitch f***ing rocketed after it! I nearly shit myself thinking she was going to get me in bother but she realised it wasn't matey and lost interest. Fortunately the keeper was laughing at it and I relaxed again.
